Foreword 1942 heralds the twenty-fifth birthday of the Caronta- wan, the little town on the hill. Mansfield is still the little town on the hill, but a few years older. Curriculums have grown in number and increased in scope, but the instructors still determine the usefulness of the course just as they did a quarter of a century ago. Buildings have had their faces lifted and witnessed the construction of new and finer buildings, but still the users of them determine their wortli. Tile book has gone througli many changes from a iiteraiy viewpoint, from the standpoint of photography, and also Irom the business manager ' s angle: but the name remains and keeps with it the traditions of otlier years, otiier books, and other staffs. 1918 saw the birth of the bock and listened while the staff decided to make it operate as a senior annual. In each . ' succeeding year. Father Time watched the new books as they came from the press and jotted down in his diarv the little changes that occurred. He saw new and better methods of photography improve the book, he saw finan- cial difficulties impose limitations on the editorial staff, and he harked to the din which arose to change the Caron- tawan from a senior annual to a college yearbook. He caught glimpses of students rushing about with petitions to have the annual made a function of the S.C.G.A. and smiled to hear that the administration respected the will of the stu- dents, the body politic. In 1918, our nation was at war testing whether that nation could long endure. New we are met on an- other battlefield of the age old struggle for the way of liv- ing for which America deems worth fighting, still testing In 1918, the students at Mansfield published an annual 1o keep alive an account of the progress oi the year ' s ac- tivities for themselves and for posterity; and now, twenty- five years later, the students do the same thing in a .some- what different manner, but for the same ultimate purpose. 1 J
