Mrs. Cole’s business law class celebrates the bicentennial of the consti tution by letting balloons drift off into the sky. 2 Jim Bob Kindle and Jason Hurt work hard to help keep the buildings spotless. Kim Metcalf finds there are times when playing basketball can hurt. These sophomores show thier school spirit by participating in the battle cry . The football players are a perfect example of what competition is all about. A few ninth graders share their plans before the tardy bell rings. One of the greatest things that you will do during high school is make friends. Friendships last long after you finish school. They play a very important role in your life. 3 THE TROUBLE WITH DATING What are the troubles with dating? First, if you are a guy, you must ask someone out. But who? You must take into consideration things such as: does her father own a shotgun? is she eaten up with acne?, is she as big as a barn? Then you must decide where to go and what to do and check to see if you have enough money. There are many possibilities; 1) A movie, which will probably cost around $4.50 each not counting cokes and popcorn. 2) Eating out, which will cost from $7.00 at McDonald’s (cheapie) to $25.00 or more at the Catfish Cove (big spender). 3) Go to the game room and cruise town, which usually runs at least $10.00 or 4) Just sitting home and watching TV. Dating can cause bankruptcy, stress, and nervous disorders, but there is a positive side. They can be the highlight of the week and help you meet and make new friends. “I think it’s fun when you can go out with different girls and it’s cool when they ask you out and pick up the tab” Mike Kabler “It’s fun as long as the car holds out” Marc Lawson “It’s fun as long as it is with someone you want to be with” Marc Willsey Anna Reano begins the ritual of preparing for a date. Those ‘‘wonderful things such as rolling your hair, shaving your legs, and make up. Most of us have curfews around 12:00 midnight, but sometimes you get home late. Excuses have changed a little since the 50’s. Angel’s watch may have stopped but unfortunately her dad's didn’t. Two Mansfield students. NEW FACES AT M.H.S. One change to come to MHS this year was the opening of the Power House Center. As expected, soon after the announcement many rumors and questions surfaced, but soon most were answered. The first effect was the additional students, who were imme- diately labeled, but as time went by and the numbers grew they soon were well on the way to become just new students. A benefit is the opportunity for our students to meet students from all over the country and in return the students at the center are ex- posed to the benefits and values of a small community. Leo Sufka and Jim Frost pose for a photo. Mr. Sufka is a counselor and Mr. Frost is the founder and owner of Power House. Power House Programs are intermediate care fa- cilities for adult adolescent males, ages 15 years and over, who have completed primary treatment. Power House will provide food, shelter, and a multi-modality community type living in a close family style atmosphere. The goal of Power House Programs is to assist in the recovery from alcohol and drug dependency. Power House is a struc- tured environment essential to the rehabilitation of individuals with histories of substance abuse and the irresponsible behaviors that accompany chemi- cal dependency. 8 Some of the guys gather together before classes start. “MARK UP” Jennifer Dillard helps sell donations to support the junior high cheerleaders: Phillip Escalante and Justin Elmore hope to win the prize All school organizations need money to fund the activities of the group and so fund raising becomes a part of just about ev- eryone’s life at Mansfield High. If you are not selling you are probably buying and most of the time both. There is no simple solution so everyone tries to make the best of the situation. Concession stand proceeds help fund sever- al groups. Two students express their feel- ings about the “Gray Goose”. This feeling is shared by several student groups in the school. When small groups go out of town on school business a bus is too large so the station wagon must be used. When the year- book staff traveled to Waldron and other area cities to sell ads several businesses knew where we were from as soon as we en- tered the parking lot. 9 SPRING PROM HUGE SUCCESS James Richmond tries to master the art of using chopsticks. All the students celebrate at the dance after the football homecoming victory. MOVING TO THE MUSIC What a way to let out the frustrations of life. Nothing feels better than to just let it all hang out. At a dance you can go crazy! You don’t have to talk. You can just move with the music. Dancing, getting down, and boogeying in any language mean the same thing. Freedom to be as crazy as you want. So the next time life has you down in the dumps, just remember you can always DANCE!!! Pain! Who invented the “bottom locker?” It sure wasn’t Einstein. You get pushed around and stepped on. People are always dropping books on your head and for some reason you are always the last one to get your books. The person with top lockers say “Oh, 1 am sorry”, but only after they have caused minor head injuries. So to the less fortunate- Better luck next year. Before the bell all Is quiet. The calm before the storm. A class change in full swing. Only the strong survive a bottom locker assignment. Robert Youker “They are terrible, inconve- nient, hard to get to, and everybody is pushing you and kicking you.” 12 SADD officers and the President of the Student Council combine to welcome Ron Fields to an assembly sponsored by SADD. ORGANIZATIONS YEARBOOK STAFF As shown at the left putting a yearbook together takes patience and hard work. Not only Anna Reano but the entire staff has spent time sitting at that table trying to draw layouts and make up meaningful captions. The FHA has organized a Just Say No club at grade school (grades 4-6). They are very excited about sharing this information with the grade school. The teen leaders hope to get alot of people to join. They think it’s a cause that is needed in school. The FHA invited Mr. Harold Trisler who was appointed by the Governor for Suicide Prevention to do a program on stress management. The present members sit and watch as the new members receive their certificates and pins. The Beta Club is composed of sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors. In order to become a member the student must have a 3.5 grade point average and good con- duct grades. The SADD members pay close attention as the plans for the year are discussed FRIENDS L FRIE DRIVE CONTRACT FOR LIFE . . . The SADD Chapter was established this year because of growing concern from both the students and the parents of the community about drinking among teenagers. The club requires that every member sign a contract for life. The contract states that if the person has been drinking or has been with someone who has they are to phone their parents or the person who signed the contract to come and pick them up. The club held an assembly to familiar- ize the student body about the consequences of drinking and driving. The guest speaker was Ron Fields, the prosecuting attor- ney for Sebastain County. Members raise their hands to volunteer for jobs that need to be done. 2? AGAINST DRIVING DRUNK ONT LET NDS DRUNK After the assembly everyone anxiously waited to see if they would be asked a question by the TV reporter. President Cathy Carter was asked several questions con- cerning the chapter. The first meeting was organized by Mr. Gattin. In this meeting the students elected the officers and the planning committee was established. Bottom Row (LtoR)T Gattln sponsor. T Quick. A McAlister. S Cook. C Carter 1st Row A Chaney. K Farrar. Opening the fall with 51 members the band performed at all home and away football games as well as competing in 2 invitational marching contests; UCA and Russellville. Following the Christ- mas concert, the band participated in the solo and ensemble contest as well as the region and state contests. One highlight of the year was participating in homecoming activities at the Univer- sity of Arkansas on November 7, 1987. Seniors Marc Lawson and Su- zanne Holland will perform with the U of A band next fall, while Jeff Coe is traveling to Arkansas Tech to perform with the band there. During the year many awards were won by individuals and by different groups. Music opens the door for scholarships, governor’s school, and All-American honors. When the tigers won the toss at the home- coming game Friday, October 2, they had a feeling that luck was on their side. The feeling held on with 8:45 left in the second quarter as Mansfield scored one more time to make it 27-0 at intermission. The last touchdown by the tigers was scored in the third quarter making it 34-0. Finally Mount Ida converted late in the fourth. The tigers defeated the lions by a score of 34-8. The victory set the pace for the homecoming dance. This was the first time in several years that Mansfield won a homecoming game. TROUP TODD ALLEN SWAN THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES . . Tari Quick, Mr. Ellison, and Cathy Carter pose for the photographer at the 1987 yearbook workshop held last summer at Arkansas Tech University at Russeville. Words can not express how wonderful this year was to me. I could not thank Mr. Ellison-Advisor and Tari Quick-Asst. Editor enough. Without their help this yearbook would have never made it to the publisher. I wanted this annual to be one that stands out in everyone’s mind. Not because of mistakes, but because of good caption outstand- ing pictures, and writings. 1 hope every student will look back on the 1988 yearbook with pride and fond memories. I know that I will.
