We have one of the best counselors here, Mr. Hugh Lowrimore. Mr. Lowrimore is always avail- able to answer students questions about class schedules, merits and grade points. He also assists the seniors with their future plans, whether it’s college or some sort of business career. Study Hall is a quiet place to study for tests or to catch up on homework. It also contains a large variety of encyclopedias to get reports out of. If nothing else you can read the newspapers or magazines that are available. This year the study hall is supervised by Mrs. Bertha Burrows. All students at one time or another have used the library. It contains many books for reading and also has many reference books. This year, the library took on a whole new look. The shelves of books were all moved around the walls to make it much easier to locate that certain book you want. Here these students take advantage of the reference materials available. 62 French—Reading—Drivers Ed This course teaches students how to speak, write and read French. It is very helpful in your later years of college and could come in quite handy if you ever travel to France or any other country where French is spoken. This is the third year that French has been offered and Mrs. Rogers hopes that more people will become interested in learning French. Here these students work on one of their assignments. Below Mr. Traylor listens while John Hall, Donald Pyles, and others read aloud. Reading is one of the basics that everyone has to learn and use the rest of their life. At M. H. S. reading is offered to seventh and eighth graders to prepare them for later book reports and to get pleasure out of books. Below, Mr. Ray and a few of his drivers cd. students pose by the mobile training unit. In drivers ed. students learn how to cope with actual problems and situations on the road before facing them in the mobile training unit provided by the Arkansas State Police. Then under the supervision of Mr. Ray they drive the drivers ed. car to see how good they really are. Below Tony Jones takes his turn at the simulator. Here you practice driving in different types of on the road situations. 63 Ma th —English English is the most important subject offered. It will be put to use the rest of your life. Seventh and eighth grade English is taught by Miss Baker. This teaches the basic English and the correct spelling and pronunciation of words. Ninth and tenth grade English is taught by Mrs. Emery. These classes teach the proper use of grammar and how to write creatively. During the junior and senior years of English you also learn about English and American Literature. These classes are taught by Mrs. Looper. Here at Mansfield four years of English is required before anyone graduates. The advanced math classes are taught by Mr. Kennedy. Top picture shows one of his Algebra 1 classes hard at work. General math is taught by Mr. Pugh. This class teaches the basic problems in math. Business math is taught by Mr. Carmack. Below he explains a problem to Jeana Michaels. 64 History-Science History is the study of what has happened in the past, what happens today, and often gives a look into the future of people’s lives all over the world. Government and civics deal with the studies of U. S. laws, documents, institutions, and the way the U. S. is run. American history is the study of our country. It tells the story of how the U. S. came to be and how the country has grown. General science, which is taught by Miss Slankard, teaches the basic principles of science. It aids a great deal in the more advanced classes of science. Biology is the study of plant and animal life. Lab experiments which include dissecting, observing things under microscopes and classifying bugs aid in the teaching of biology. Physics is the science dealing with properties, changes, and interaction of matter and energy. 65 Physical Education-Health Physical education cannot be dismissed as a subject that is unimportant, because unless a person feels his best, he cannot achieve his goals in the classroom or out in the world. P. E. offers an opportunity to exercise your body and to relieve some of the tension and stress. It also develops your ability to get along with people and your cooperation. Some of the things done in p. e. are exercises, volleyball, races, basket- ball drills and several other team games. These pictures show the senior high boys and girls p. e. classes enjoying a swift game of volleyball. Health is the study of the human body, its systems and how they work and how to take care of your body. You learn about the muscles, bones and the heart. This year health was also offered to the senior high classes which are taught by Miss Slankard. The junior high classes are taught by Mr. Sparks. 66 Art-Speech In Art I you learn to draw the basic shapes, designs, and figures. You learn to draw houses by using vanishing points, figure drawings, still life drawings and how to shade in objects. You also get to pick out some sort of project to do that is creative and shows how skillful you are. These include something like crocheting, macrame, sand art, leather craft, and pottery. In Art II the student deals mainly with their own specialty. They go into the more advanced drawings, paintings and other art work. These pictures show some of the eighth grade art students shaping their Halloween masks for one of their art projects. The most important thing about Speech is being able to participate in class. This helps you to learn how to communicate and convey your ideas to other people. It also teaches the proper way to present your speeches in front of a crowd. Here Mrs. Rogers and the class listen intently while Danny Goines gives one of the many speeches that must be given. 67 Agriculture Agriculture is the study of such things as crop judging, livestock judging, improving plants, soil conservation, using farm tools, operating farm equipment and learning about parliamentary procedure. Agri also consists of a certain amount of class work that must be done. The students also get to do certain projects and some of these include making bookends, gun racks or picture frames. These projects take a lot of time and patience but there is nothing like the feeling of making something useful with your own two hands. Agriculture classes are taught by Mr. Wells and Mr. Williams. Top: Students saw some wood to use for their projects. Middle: Some of the junior agri boys enjoy some of their class time. Bottom left: Mr. Wells explains a certain procedure to some of his students. Bottom right: Mr. Simpson gives D. J. and Dan some helpful tips on their project. 68 Home Economics Each year in home economics you learn something new and different. You learn the art of cooking, the techniques of sewing, how to plan and decorate a home, child care, grooming and how to be the best person you can. You have a certain amount of class time and lab time. In lab you learn how to plan and prepare meals. You also learn how to properly set the table and to seat your guests at the table. While sewing you learn all about the sewing machine and how to make all types of garments. The home ec. classes are taught by Mrs. Ward. Top: Becky Fry docs a bit of ironing on her baby dress. Middle: Mrs. Ward looks on while ninth grade class enjoys a bit of free time. Bottom right: Mrs. Ward explains the proper way to sew a baby dress to these senior girls. Bottom left: Debbie Lang gets her sewing machine ready to sew. 69 Business-Economics The business courses offered this year were Typing I, accounting and office practice. Each of these classes aid a great deal with one’s abilities to have a successful career as a secretary, office worker, executive or an accountant. In Typing I you learn how to type with speed and accuracy. You also learn to type letters and how to center things. In office practice you learn to use machines that are usually in an office. You use the calculators and adding machines and the dictaphone. In accounting you learn the fundamentals of writing checks, filling tax forms and keeping accounts and budgets. Miss Browning is the business instructor. Economics is the study of the production, distribution and consumption of wealth. It also deals with the problems of labor, finance and taxation. Today, a lot of people find out that it pays to know a little about our economic system. Mr. Carmack is the instructor in Economics. c 70 HONORS Senior Class of 1980 MANIFIgLD H10H SCHOOL hirsl Row: Jackie Wyatt, Emily Williams, Ted Elmore, Lisa Wheeler, Ann Whitsett, Delilah Presson, Michael Klentz, Beverly Jones, Jerry Efurd, Lisa Quick, Susan Tucker, Danny Goines, Brenda Byers, Melody McGill. If. in some small way, we are able to add to your happiness, we will have accomplished our purpose. 156 The Annual Staff at work A yearbook requires much planning and work. Above, Becky is measuring and drawing lay-outs on a tri-pak for the sports section. Most of the work submitted to the publishers is typewritten. Carol and Curtis are typing lay-outs for the high school section. A big thanks to Sheila Loopcr, the Tiger photographer, who shot most of the snapshots in the yearbook this year. Myra and Mr. Lowrimore are selecting pictures to be used in the annual. 157
