David was known for his smile and friendly ways. He enjoyed several sports, including football, baseball, and hunting. Though we miss David very much, we know he is safe and happy at his home above. He enriched our lives very much and our memories of him should only be good ones. “And 1 give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.” John 10:28 “A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.” John 16:16 Freshman Class Freshman Class Officers: President: Kris Carr Vice-Pres.: Jackie Pirpich Sec.-Treas.: Michael Winters Reporter: Pam Selph Brenda Baze Bruce Boggs Paul Bonds Kenny Borden Jeff Brewer Tammy Brewer Susan Cabe Chris Campbell Kris Carr Shelly Cass Von Cass Becky Conner Kevin Clopton Al Crelia Shelly Cumbie Evert Cunningham 47 James Curtis Doreen DeLeon Shane Derr Nancy Efurd Tonya Efurd Becky Elmore Charlotte Elmort Allen Escalante Heather Farr Dewayne Feimster Lana Foote Debbie Ford Steve Glenn Ten Goddard Peggy Goines Denise Hamilton Jeff Hammonds The Freshmen worked hard on their Homecoming float. H. S. Below she is consulting her student assistants on the organization of the library. Miss Maxell earned her BSE degree at Ouachita Baptist University. Below Jimmy Brown and Billy Honey use the library information for reference work on reports and other assignments. The library is provided for students to work quietly and efficiently. Counseling Above Mr. Lowrimore counsels Charles Tucker on his grade point average and credits he will have for the next school year. Counseling is provided for all students at M.H.S. Above D. J. Elmore is counseled about classes he will need in the coming year. Mr. Lowrimore is also the Yearbook Sponsor. Study Hall Mrs. Pam Colley is the new Study Hall teacher this year. Study Hall is a place for students to catch up on Homework and use the library. Mrs. Colley is available to help students and to keep the Study Hall quiet for those studying upcoming tests. Above J. D. Belt is trying to think of some way to spend his Study Hall. 62 French Mrs. Rogers teaches I'nglish and Frrench. Here she looks on while some of her students that are taking French work hard on their assignments. Above Mrs. Rogers goes over more work with her students. In this class home- work is essential for learning. Reading Mr. Traylor teaches the Reading classes at Mansfield. Above he is helping Marty Crowe pick out a book for his book report. Above Mr. Traylor’s students go over their reading assignment. Reading is a funda- mental the students will use often through- out school and after school. Driver Ed Above Shelly Cunibie practices her driving in Drivers Ed., it looks as if she has come upon a bumpy road. This practice helps the students to look out for objects that can run out in front of you while driving. Below Mr. Hattabaugh goes over the car and some of its parts with some of his Drivers Ed. students. 63 Science Science History Mansfield science programs consist of General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Mr. Vincent teaches Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Above he is ex- plaining the proper way to use the micro- scope to some of his Biology students. Above: In this Chemistry class Sabrina Morgan and Jerry Brewer are busy figuring up a problem, while LaVonn Harp waits to write down the results. Miss Slankard teaches the general science classes. Below she is going over a study sheet with one of her Eighth Grade classes. This science class prepares students for more advanced courses of science. Coach Sparks, besides coaching football, teaches Seventh Grade Health. Below he stops to help Charlene try to understand what she's reading. Mr. Cochran teaches World History, American History and American Govern- ment. Above he is helping Debbie Ham- ilton locate some of her American History terms. Mr. Murray Massey is a new Social Studies teacher, he attended Henderson State University where he earned his BSE degree in Social Studies. Above he watches while some of his Ninth graders work on questions in their textbook. 64 Math English Math Mark Wooten seems to be a little con- fused as Mr. Kennedy tries to explain the assignment. Algebra II is a difficult class for many Juniors and Seniors. M.II.S. offers several courses in math: General Math, Business Math, Algebra I II, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Mr. Kennedy teaches most of the math classes at Mansfield. Below in one of his Algebra I classes, he is helping one of his students solve a problem. Mr. Pugh teaches the seventh and eighth grade math classes. Below Beth Martin is busy doing some math problems. In Senior Literature Lewis Farrar dis- cusses Beowulf’s superhuman strength with Mrs. Looper. Literature stories are enjoyed by all Seniors, but sometimes quite un- believable. Mrs. Looper explains that each story has a moral, so the story can be better understood. Miss Baker teaches the seventh and eighth grade Lnglish classes. Above Kim Lucas is making a book club selection. Mrs. Emery teaches ninth and tenth grade English classes. Below she takes a break from her text-book and lets her stu- dents read Scope Magazine. English is a required course at Mansfield. 65 Physical Education c. T' 'At • ( f - t - During the Junior High boys P.E. class these boys decided to start a game of football. This class offers many physical fitness games and exercises. Above the boys get practice for intramural football, plus they learn to get along together and how to organize their own games. It’s a class where fitness is important but sportsmanship means more. Above the Junior boys are busy playing a game of Volleyball. This is a new game that most students really enjoy. It’s exciting and takes teamwork to set the ball up and get it over. Volleyball is also a non-contact sport. Below Robert Walker and Jerry Brew er get ready for a jump ball during Senior boys P. E. class. Bruce Hawthorne and Rod Connors wait to battle it out for the basket- ball. P. E. classes give the boys a chance to be better athletes even if they don’t play in real competition. Below the Senior High girls P.E. class enjoys a game of volleyball. Lena goes up to hit the ball across the net, while others wait to return it. Girls have a choice of playing volleyball for fun or competition. These girls chose to play for fun. Above the Junior High girls are busy doing a large number of sit-ups. Most Mansfield students are in good shape because most of the students have a P.E. class on their schedule. Physical fitness is a big part of todays world. Here it looks as if the Junior High girls do nothing but exercises. Above they are doing jumping-jacks. A little exercise never hurt anyone and with friends close around most students seem to enjoy their P.E. classes and being in shape. 66 Art Speech Mrs. Glynnis McGehee is the new Art teacher at M.H.S. Art is a new subject offered to students this year. Mrs. McGehee attended Ark. Tech University where she earned a BA degree in Art Education. Below Mrs. McGehee gets a laugh out of some of the subjects her art students attempt to draw. Below Mrs. McGehee is helping Laurie Metcalf find a subject to start of her art work. Laurie and other art students are very enthused about the new Art class. Art is a class that brings out the talents of many of our Mansfield students. Above Russell, Neal and Larry are more concerned about the pictures in the magazines rather than their own art work. Mrs. McGehee does her job by getting them back on the right path. Mr. Carl Underwood is the new Speech teacher at M.H.S. Mr. Underwood has a BSE degree from the College of the Ozarks. Mr. Underwood stresses a point to his class - how important it is to project. Projection from the back of the room is no problem, it’s when we step behind the podium that we run into difficulty. Below Mr. Underwood looks interested as members of the speech class are giving their speeches. Speech students have improved since the first of the year. Most of all this year they enjoyed playing the Rhyme Game. Talking to the wall was their least favorite. Below the Speech class enjoys one of Mr. Underwoods jokes. M.H.S. could have one of the best debate teams if Mr. Underwood would let us. But no one is every wrong in our class. 67 Agriculture Above Mr. Walker does a demonstration in Agri as Debbie Hamilton and Tammy Turner watch. They seem to be a little confused and amazed at the same time. Agri is for boys and girls now, but all Agri students must be FFA members. Above Mr. Wells and Nina Bailey look over the creeds during Agri. Mr. Wells did his practice teaching here at Mansfield last year. Agriculture is a basic way of life for many Americans. It teaches the boys of today responsibility to become the men of tomorrow. Above Grady Clopton works with electrici- ty, a very touchy job. Below we leave the shop and go back to the classroom where Dwayne Feimster seems to be enjoying class. The students in the background are concentrating on their work. Above Mr. Williams supervises as the Agri boys work out in the shop. Shop is an important event in Agri. The boys learn to work together, and can take pride in their work. Above Neal Mannon works out in the shop doing some welding, a job that con- sists of skill and carefulness. Agri is a place where being careful should always be a part of the job. 68 Home Economics Mrs. Ward looks over her Tenth Grade Home Ec. class while they read their assign- ment, but it looks like Elaine Harp and Leea H unsucker have found something more interesting to look at. Home Ec. is a class where the basics of the home are taught to students. Above Mrs. Ward helps LaVonn Harp and Rhonda Elmore with their project, being Seniors they want everything to be just right. Mrs. Ward goes over the Ninth grade homework in the above picture. Homework is an important part of Home Ec., the girls learn to do their own work and remember from their lab work. Below LaVonn Harp gets assistance from Mrs. Ward about a recipe during Senior Home Ec. The first sewing project for the Seniors this year, will be to make a baby dress. Below Jackie Wyatt seems to enjoy Junior Home Ec. class. Home Ec. is a class that lets all the girls work together and become closer friends. Below Anita Purser and Mrs. Ward look over a poster that has been sent to the Home Economics department. Cooking, sewing, and housekeeping is something that all future housewives should know. 69 Business Economics Lisa Wheeler and the Juniors enjoy their first year of typing, but will soon learn that it sometimes gets nerve-racking. Espcially when your fingers can’t go as fast as your mind tells them to. Below Mr. Carmack explains during his Economics class that with inflation the price of toothpicks and salt will probably go up. “But will this keep you from buying them or loaning any to a friend?” Below Mr. Carmack’s Economics class seems a little puzzled, but being Seniors they will soon Business classes are part of most students f,nd out what Economics is all about, schedule. Below Miss Brownings Accounting class stays busy comparing totals and trying to stay in the right columns. Business Several Seniors took Typing I this year. Above John Moore and Mike Elmore try to figure out how to get fewer mistakes when the keys are so small and your fingers are so large. Office Practice is a class that teaches the basics of office work. Above Tammy Burrows and Rhonda Elmore are taking notes on the different kinds of duplicating machines. 70 HONORS Queen Carla Henson Escorts Kenny Elmore John David Moore Homecoming Royalty 1. ORGANIZATIONS Student Council Reaches Student Council Officers Pres.—Keith Burgett V. Pres.—Kenny Boyd Sec.—Lorraine Parish Sponsor—Mr. Larry Cochran The Student Council is a group of students from each class which represents the whole school and the President carries great responsibility. The Student Council is responsible for Assemblies, including the Homecoming Assembly which includes several cheers and skits. This year the Student Council also bought Queen Carla’s crown and the flowers for all the royalty. Pictured: A typical Student Council meeting. Most meetings are lengthly and accomplish a lot. It looks like a heated discussion is about to start. Several students participated in Overall Day during Homecoming Week. Also Sock-It-To-’Em and Fifties Day was greatly enjoyed. Students At Homecoming Races during the Homecoming Assembly included the wheelbarrow and rolling the football races. Classes and clubs each entered a competitor. The Student Council skit featured Dr. Mike, the mad scientist, and poor Lorraine who took all the bad effects put out by the Tigers. All this effort had a great ending—Tiger Homecoming Victory! The Student Council is composed of several committees which work toward the organization of the Intramural games. Members of the Student Council attend area workshops as well as, the new officers who attend the State Convention. Attending the Student Council Workshop this year were Lorraine Parish and Kenny Boyd. Student Council Members: 1st ROW: P. Self, M. Cagle, M. McCain, B. Fry, J. Bonds, K. Sanderson. 2nd ROW: C. Mr. Hugh Lowrimore The Annual Staff is a group of hard working and creative students who, under the encouragement of Mr. Lowrimore, work throughout the year to meet four dead- lines. The annual is for everyone and covers every aspect of MHS. Besides meeting deadlines the staff has a lot of fun! The theme-for this year’s TIGER. “Reaching Out”, was chosen because it affects everyone, it is a part of every student at MHS. Not only do we reach for knowledge, vic- tories, friendship, and talents, but we also try to make a place for ourselves-let others know who we are. We hope anyone who looks at this yearbook can see the friendly place that Mansfield High School is. These good feelings are all because of you who make up MHS. Keep reaching to grasp your goals! 156 To Bring You the Year of ’79 Three members of this year’s annual staff and Mr. Lowrimore attended the Annual Workshop at Westark in the summer. Teresa. Carla, and Sandy show interest as Mr. Frehiem tries to help them with their layouts. They went on to win the “Outstanding Effort” award. Sandy, Myra, Vonn, Carla, and Sheila urge you to Reach Out REACHING OUT for... A way to feel close but not to say good-bye. This feeling, these people will always exist—in more ways than one. The Tigers of Mansfield will always be reaching out. Success, victories, memories, and recognition are all part of a person’s world. We at MHS encounter these in a special way—together as a group of friends. We believe in ourselves and each other—a total MHS that’s really ‘making it’. In closing, here on this page only, you are urged to remember these times of reach and to keep on reaching! Good Luck in accomplishing your goals! 157 —
