Jan Walker, Academic Editor Headache in the OfficeI Supervising the 450 students enrolled al Mansfield High, starling the new Agri class, and presiding over a faculty of 21 including 4 new teachers, added to Mr. Brewer’s, Mr. Mannon's, Mr. Lowrimore’s, and Mr. Carmack's duties. That is enough to give anyone a headache. Mr. Lowrimore and Brenda discuss a yearbook deadline. 38 New Face in English Class! Wt have a new face in English this year, Mrs. Loo per. Although she Itad a late start, she is getting her point across and we are ac- tually learning something. To overcome our shyness we gave 3 oral book reports. The Seniors overcame an even more strenuous obstacle, Macbeth. Fred is giving his oral hook report in Junior English. 39 Section Fever Sweeps Social Studies In the Government classes the students gave campaign speeches for tin- candidate of their choice. After the speeches there was a debate, most of the students asked questions for the others to answer. All the « lasses took a straw vote, with one candidate leading with a hundred votes. Pat and U esa are participating in a debate in Government. Jan is giving a speech in Government. These History students are looking up answers to some questions. Paul is giving a report in Geography. 40 Science Students Ask “Why” Whal does sodium and water do? In Lab class, Mr. Vincent tried to explain it to the students, but he had to demonstrate and the mixture exploded. The students are learning the practical uses for the metric system and logarithms. John and Jeff' are trying a lab experiment. Russell and Perry are using weights to gel just the right amount. 41 How Did You Get That Answer? That is a frequent phrase heard in the various Math classes. I Ik students have been learning the Metric system, the square roots, and the properties of the numbers. Geometry students are trying to understand the way the problems are Shannon works a puzzling problem on the hoard, worked. Mr. Carmacks tries to explain a problem to his Business Math students. 42 My Fingers Won't Fit on the Keys! Thai is a lint heard everyday of the first nine weeks in typing. But by the end of the year all seem to fit. In shorthand elass the slu dents seem to be talking Greek when they read aloud what they have written. When translated it is English. 43 Boys in Home Economics? No, ihe boys haven't decided to go into the happy day-to-day life of sewing, rooking and cleaning—maybe next year? The home ec classes did gel some improvements this year, two new fully equipped kitchens. This means a lot to the girls in home ec. It is hard to wash dishes in cold water. These Sophomores are making macrame plant hangers. These Seniors are working in a fundamental program they have been working on lor four years, they should know it. 44 Girls in Agri? Yes it’s true, there an 12 girls from grades 9 through 12 taking Agri this year. The boys don’t think the girls lielong, hut they not only went on the juding teams to the fair, the girls even adventured in the shop activities. These Seniors are in wood working hut they don’t seem to know Paul is working on a rough draft for a building, what they are doing. This is first « lass of girls in Agri at Mansfield. Mr. Dorrough gives Preston some instruction on how to finish his cedar chest. 45 New Record Set in Driver Education In Driver Education it was said that Mr. DeWitt set a record for applying the brakes on his side of the car. It’s no wonder why he set I his record wilh the students he rode with. Coaeh DeWitt is trying to teach Brad, Debbie, Preston and Mike how to drive. Champion Volleyball Team in Physical Education This year for the first time the I . E. Department had a volleyball tournament. The boys are throwing horseshoes—a very strenuous sport. Two of our “great” volleyball teams battle it out for the No. 1 posi- tion. Horseshoe pitching has grown in popularity with the boys. 46 Sleeping in S. H. Although a number of requests have been pul in the suggestion box to let the students sleep in Study Hall, there has been no ac- tion taken on it. At least the idea is milling around in the heads of our supervisors. Jr. High students use the S. II. to do their homework. ( uiet in the Library! Lining the shelves of the Library are books containing the knowledge needed for Reports, Criticism, Research Papers, Book reviews, and enjoyable reading. Ronnie is taking advantage ol the library's information. 47 THE WORLD OF HONORS All-District football—Mike Gallimorr, Greg Witcher, Mark Shackelford. Dale Sanderson, Konnie Moore and Kandy Stanlill. In the second quarter Roger Cole scored on an 11-yard run. The score was set up on a pass interception by Ricky Bryant. Mansfield controlled the hall most of the game. Bonneville’s most serious threat was in the fourth quarter. A major penalty put the ball on the Mansfield three yard line for a first and goal. Less than two minutes remained in the game with Mansfield leading by only six points. On the first down Donnie Edwards broke through to force a one-yard loss. On the second down the left side of the line broke through caus- ing a four yard loss. On the third down the entire line swarmed in to force a fumble. Mansfield then let the clock run out to re- cord their win. Mansfield Squeakes by Mounlainburg What had been expected to be an easy game turned out to be somethimg else. Mansfield controlled the game most of the game, but the score was 0-0 late in the fourth quarter. A blocked punt by I). J. Elmore, Donnie Edwards and Billy Booth rolled into the end zone and was recovered by Booth for a touchdown. Roger Cole blasted in for the two point conver- sion making the score 8-0. 84 GOES UNDEFEA TED Mountainhurg then went ihe length of ihe field lo score, using a new formation with one bark split left, the center and quarterback on the left hash-mark, with the quarterback liack ten yards from the line of scrimmage, and everybody else split to the right about 15 yards. The extra point try failed and the Tigers again ran out the clock preserving a win. Juniors Defeat Ixivaca 22-14 Mansfield’s Junior Team stretched their season record to 5- 0 by defeating l avaca 22-14 in a wild game that included two weird touchdowns, one for each team. With Mansfield leading 14-0 in the third quarter the Golden Arrows put together a 92-vard scoring drive making the score 14-6. Early in the fourth quarter Pirpich flipped a pitchoul which was hobbled and a l ivaca player broke through, grab- bed the ball in mid-air and triced 45 yards for a Tl). A jwss on the conversion made the score 14-14. After a series of downs Mansfield was forced to punt. The snap sailed over I). J. Elmore’s head. He picked up the hall lo punt, hut Ixivaca players were converging on him from every direction thus making a punt unwise. He spotted Roger Cole about ten yards away and passed the lull to him. Some ex- cellent running accompanied by several key blocks enabled Roger to go about 60 yards for the Tl). The play was ruled a screen pass and although the flag was dropped, with the in- dication being illegal receiver down field, the score was good, since the hall was caught behind the line of scrimmage. Mansfield wins Eighth Game 58-0 Mansfield ran its record to 8-0 with an easy 38-0 win over llackett. Jerry llattahaugh scored twice and also added a two- point conversion to lead Mansfield to the victory. Mansfield lias oulscored its opposition by 160-34 this season.
