Seventeen units are required for graduation. Three types of diplomas are offered to graduate at MHS. They are: Academic:: 4 English, 3 History, 3 Math, 3 Science and 1 I E. Vocational: 4 English, 3 History, 2 Math, 2 Science and 1 PE. Attendance: 4 English, 2 History, 2 Math, and 2 Science. The instructional staff consists of twenty-four professional mem tiers. Several mem hers have Master’s Degrees and others are working toward higher degrees. Mr. Hugh Ivowrimore is the high school counselor. He attended Arkansas Polytechnic College, received his BSE from Henderson Slate University anti his MSE from University of'(Central Ark. He lias additional graduate work from UCA and Arkansas State University. Individual counseling is only one of the many tasks Mr. Lowrimore performs each day. Creative communication involves: first—ideas or concepts, second—the logical organization of these ideas, and third—the clear, sincere written or oral expression of these ideas. English teachers treat English as a device of effective communication, and the general objectives of the English classes and courses are the improvement of communication, better listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking. Mrs. Suette Curry teaches eleventh and twelfth grade English and Speech. She re- ceived her BS from Pikeville College, and her Slasters Degree at Eastern Univer- sity of Kentucky. The seniors are hunting answers for an assignment. Miss Sarita Baker teaches seventh and eighth grade English classes. She received her BA from Quarhita University and has an MEd from the University of Arkansas. The seventh graders are having a class discussion. Sdftowleclcje oj entiai Although extensive stu l in tin field of mathematics is not necessary for all people, a knowledge of basic mathematical skills and techniques, as well as the ability to use mathematical methods is needed by all people. The mathematics program therefore pro- vides courses for all students that w ill enable them to attain a general knowledge of mathematics necessary to make intelligent deci- sions in buying and selling goods and sendees. Mr. Douglas Carmack teaches Economics and Business Math, lie re- ceived his BSE from Southern Stale College. Mr. Carmack is explaining how money should he handled. Mr. lxirn Kennedy teaches Trigonometry, Geometry. Algebra I II. He received his BSE and MSE from SCA. Diane Brown and other Geometry students are constructing diagrams. 14 Mr. I.arr Pugh teaches 7th and 8th grade math. He received his BA from Quachila University. By studying tin how and the why of the past students develop a ! elter comprehension of the present and now possibilities of the future. Mr. Mannon gives a puzzling histon quiz to the seventh grade math stu- dents. Mr. Mannon received his BS from the College of the Ozarksand has a MEd from the University of Arkansas. World History students are learning early governments and eiviliza lions. Mr. Cochran received his BS from Ark. Tech and has graduate work from the University of Arkansas. Mr. Herbert Blanton teaches Jr. Hi. History. He received his BA from Stetson University. Mr. Cochran is having a « lass discussion with his A. History class. These Geography students are studying maps and land formations. 15 sScience Expand 3£nowleclcje The Science Department of MHS is designed to expand students knowledge in the various fields of science. In this class it in. eludes general science, biology, chemistry, and physics. The science program has many interesting areas to lx- explored; and one may easily determine his life’s career by becoming at- traded to one of these fields. Mr. Charles Vincent teaches the senior high sciences. He received his BSK from Southern Stale and MSE from the University of Arkansas. Miss Debra Slankard teaches the junior high science classes. She re ceived her BSE from Arkansas Tech. Students are learning the science fundamentals. The knowledge, altitudes, and non-vocational skills needed l persons to be effective in iheir personal economic life and in iheir understanding our economic system. 2. The voca- tional knowledge and skills needed for initial employment and for advancement in a luisiness career. Our program deals with l oth of these factors. Miss Barbara Browning teaches the business courses al WHS. Miss Browning received her BS from Arkansas Tech, and a MEd from the University of Arkansas. 17 Creativity eme in sSpeecli curnaiivm com- Mansfield High School offers one course in Speech. The class is offered to Seniors. It demonstrates the art of the spoken wore through self expression. Sludenis enrolled in Journalism gain practical experience for future jobs with newspapers, magazines, and publishing c panics. In addition to Speech and Journalism Mansfield offers Choir and Band. Mr. James Hamilton teaches both Choir and Band. He received his BME from Henderson State College. Mr. Edmond Brewer teaches Journalism. He received his AS from Arkansas Tech. His BSA and MEd from the University of Arkansas, and additional graduate work from U. of A. All members in the Speech class doing the Can-Can. Mike Whittaker. Pam Hope, Neil Hurt, Charlene Moore, Chuck Chapman, and Vicky Carlton relive a scene in “Dogpatch.” Journalism class cuts out newspaper articles to use in their notebooks. Home Economics is used in almost any field that you go into. This course is an elective hut most people take it at least two years. All of the ways and ideas of doing this are taught and practiced in the Home Economics I through III. Throughout the years, the girls learn the techniques and skills of sew ing, the art of cooking, and the basics of planning a home. The courses of Home Economics are also devoted to trying to strengthen the bonds U tween families and communities by broadening the scope of youth activities and to help youth comprehend the problems of society and their solutions. Mrs. Sue Ward teaches all of the Home Ec onomies classes. She re- ceived her BSHE from the University of Arkansas. 19 olericulture ' mpUciMze«5 «Specific v$kill Instruction in agriculture emphasizes the development of specific knowledge and skill necessary for successful participation in an agricultural occupation. A desirable balance is maintained between the instructional activities of the classroom and farm- mechanic shop and the practical experience provided on the farm and in non-farming agricultural activities of the community. Mr. Terry Williams leaches the Agriculture classes. He received his BSA Mr. Thomas Dewey teaches the Agriculture classes. He received from the University of Ark. his BSA from the University of Arkansas. Mansfield High School is one of the few schools in Ark. to have two Agri teachers. 9th grade Agriculture students are learning the basic fundamen- tals of Agriculture. Mr. Harp is a Teacher's Aid. a new program here in the Agriculture depart- ment. Mr. Harp is explaining a project to Rands Whittaker and Glen Jeffords. 20 sStrencftliend =pUy6iccil growth Mr. Simmons, Driver’s Education Instructor, instructs his students how to drive, how to drive defensively, and to have a good altitude towards driving. Mr. Simmons received his B. S. from the College of the Ozarks. He coaches Senior High basketball. A required course for fun as well as profit—that’s Physical Education. Different from other classes, gym means lun through many games and sports. It offers training in physical fitness and also provides opportunity to develop cooperation, through team play, and ability to get along with people. Mr. DeWitt teaches the Junior High boys and girls l askethal! teams. Mr. Paul Sparks coaches the Senior football team. Mr. DeWitt teaches World History and Civics. He received his IIS from the College of the Ozarks. Mr. Spurks teaches General Science, lie received his BS from the Col- lege of the Ozarks. 7th grade girls are eagerly going through their morning exercises. vS- and library rovicle Quiet ‘ Place lor %Study here can 1 tuul a quid place lo study? is a question often heard of many Mansfielders, and the answer is invariably the li- brary or study hall. The “big study hall houses about eighty students each period. The studv hall is supervised by Mrs. V irginia Simpson. Students use their study hall period to study, make up tests cheek out books, ami do reference. The Library, another refuge of quiet, is staffed hy Mrs. Betty Blanton. Whether they are searching for a reference book or an ex- citing mvsterv. Mansfielders usually find w hat they need in the library of four thousand books, numerous newspapers and fifty cur- rent magazines. Student librarians not only assist the students in finding books and checking them out hut also keep the volumes in order and maintain a branch library in the main study hall. Mrs. Bctt Blanton is the Librarian. She received her BA from Ouachita University and additional hours from SCA. MANSFIELD—0 CLARKSVILLE—39 Our worst defeat of the entire year. Clarksville surprised us. Our boys just didn’t seem to get it together.
