Another important area is transportation. Approximately 75% of the student body is transported to and from school. The bus drivers are well trained and the buses kept in excellent condition. The traditional bonfire, absent during the past few years, was revived. Burn the Indians was the theme of the bonfire and a large crowd attended Thursday night. Cries of “Beat Lamar” echoed in the hall during the week after each class. The activities distracted studies for nine weeks tests and kept students excited and husv in the days pre- ceding homecoming. Nearly everyone was sporting WIN But- tons (Whip Indians Now). Friday morning many organizations frantically added last minute touches to their mini-floats in a bid for first place. First place went to the Senior Class in the Senior High Divi- sion. The title of their lloat was “Puppet Theater.” The Eighth Grade captured first place in their division with “VK illed Warrior Salad.” The Pep Assembly was held Friday afternoon. Mark Plymale. Doug Dorrough, and Kicky Carlton represent their classes in a “Spirit Contest” by silting in buckets of ice. Results? A tie. 12 EXCITEMENT, MEMORIES Skits were presented by different groups including “Ten Little Indians” (left) and the cheerleader skit (below left), The Tigers Can’t Be Stopped.” In Friday night’s pre-game ceremonies Teresa Slate was crowned Homecoming Queen 1974. Paula Hal- tahaugh was Maid of Honor and the Maids were: Janice Slankard, Susie Byers, Karla Plymale, Tammy Burrows, Marla Biggs. Brenda Webb and Laura Carter. The seventy seniors make up the largest Senior Class ever to enroll at Mansfield. The Juniors number fifty- seven, Sophomores seventy-five, Fresh- men sixty-three. Eighth Grade eighty. Seventh Grade eighty-nine. Twenty-two instructors, teaching thirty-six courses in nine departments attempt to fill the educational needs of the student body. Three diplomas are offered at Mansfield: The Academic, the Voca- tional and the Attendance Diplomas. COUNSELING One of the most important places in Mansfield is the guidance office, where students go for counseling on present and future activities. Mr. Hugh Lowrimore is the Coun- selor. He received his BSE from Hen- derson State College and his MSE from State College of Ark. with additional graduate work from SCA and Ark. Stale University. Mr. Lowrimore is Sponsor of the Yearbook. Mr. Lowrimore’s work is divided into several phases. When school begins, each student makes out an educational plan. This enables the student to schedule courses for the oncoming year. Another phase includes preparing Seniors for their next step after gradua- tion, whether it be college or a vocation. The hub of the program is individual counseling with all students. The main objective is to help students in every' way possible with their plans for the future. Top: Students catch up on their homework in study hall. Center: Mr. Lowrimore and Mr. Man- non help Jerry Morgan and Mitchell Looper with their schedules. Bottom: Mr. Lowrimore and Sherry Sihary check schedule chart for a class. 30 ENGLISH Man's desire to communicate with his fellow man is fulfilled through his study of the English language. Our English instructors strive to guide each of us in obtain- ing and practicing the princ iples of grammar and composi- tion. Along with grammar, much emphasis is placed on literature. The development of creative and formal writing abilities is stressed by formal and informal speeches and research papers. Miss Sarita Baker teaches seventh and eighth grade English classes. She received her BA from Ouachita University and has graduate work from the1 University of Arkansas. Miss Baker is Sponsor of the Cheerleaders and Co-Sponsor of the eighth grade class. Mrs. Brenda Emery teaches ninth and tenth grade English and French. Mrs. Emery received her BSE from Arkansas Tech. She is Sponsor of the Sophomore Class. Mrs. Carolyn Goss teaches eleventh and twelfth grade English and Speech. She received her BA from Arkansas Tech. lop: Ninth grade students are busy doing writing exercises. Bottom: Miss Baker checks Timmy Turner's paper. I ommy Eacret and others are adding nouns and adjectives to the suffix chart. SCIENCE The Science Department of MHS is designed to expand stu- dents’ knowledge in the various fields of science. In this class is included general science, biolog), chemistry and physics. The science program has many interesting areas to be ex- plored, and one may easily determine his life’s career by becoming attracted to one of these fields. With the ever expanding world ol science comes new methods, new ways of teaching, and experimenting. Mr. Charles Vincent teaches the senior high sciences. He re- ceived his BSE from Southern Slate and a MSF, from the University of Arkansas. Mr. Vincent is Co-Sponsor of the Junior Class. Miss Debra Slankard teaches the junior high science classes. She received her BSE from Arkansas Tech. She is also Co-Sponsor of the Junior Class. Top picture: General Science Glass. Middle: Greg Moore and John kiker are working on a delicate experi- ment. By studying the how and the why of the past, students develop a better comprehension of the present and new possibilities of the future. Students enrolled in a social studies course are often encouraged to partici- pate in the democratic process of this country. American history, geography, world history, economics, American govern- ment are courses offered to students in the social studies department. Two units of social studies. Civics and American history, are required for graduation. Mr. Larry Cochran teaches American Government, American History and World History. He received his BS from Ark. Tech and has graduate work from the University of Ark. Mr. Cochran is Sponsor of the Student Council. Mr. Herbert Blanton teaches junior high history and one section of seventh grade math. He received his BA from Stetson University and has additional hours from SCA and the University of Arkansas. MATH Since only two units of math an required for graduation, many of the courses are taken for electives. Mansfield's mathematics curriculum covers areas from General Mathematics to Algebra II and occasionally Trig- onometry. The increasing contribution of math to the culture of the modern world, as well as its importance as a vital part of scien- tific and humanistic education, has made it essential that math in our schools be well selected and well taught. Mr. I.arrv Kennedy teaches Geometry, Algebra I II. Busi- ness Math and General Math. Me received his BSE and MSE from SC A. He is Co-Sponsor of the Senior Class. Mr. Larry Pugh teaches junior high math. He received his BA from Quachita University. The “big” study hall houses about one hundred students each period. The study hall is supervised by Mrs. Virginia Simpson. LIBRARY The library, another refuge of quiet, is staffed by Mrs. Betty Blanton. Whether they are searching for a reference book or an exciting mystery. Mansfielders usually find what they need in the library of four thousand books, numerous newspapers and fifty current magazines. Student librarians not only assist the students in finding books and checking them out but also keep the volumes in order and maintain a branch library in the main study hall. Mrs. Betty Blanton is the Librarian. She received her BA from Quachita University and has additional hours from SCA. Mrs. Blanton is sponsor of the Library (dub and Co-Sponsor of the seventh grade. PHYSICAL EDUCA TION A required course for fun as well as profit—that’s Physical Education. Different from other classes, gym means fun through many games and sports. It offers training in physical fitness and also provides opportunity to develop cooperation, through team play, and the ability to get along with people. Mr. Lar- ry DeWitt teaches eighth grad history, senior girls p.e. and coaches the junior boys girls basketball teams. Mr. DeWitt received his BS from the Col- lege of the Ozarks. Also, such training fits into the world of those who are college hound or into tin- everyday file of the homemaker. Accounting, with its “facts and figures, helps a student pre- pare for the future in personal or career life by learning the fundamentals of writing checks, filling tax forms and keeping accounts and budgets. Typing, a course for those who are “keen at pounding key,” is an asset in school work (resides being useful in preparation lor a business career. Shorthand, a vocational course, offers valuable training in preparation for a business career. Miss Barbara Browning, teaches the business courses at MHS. Miss Browning received her B. The Bulldogs capitalized on some of our mistakes and slipped by 14-6. Mansfield—0, Ozark—44 Mansfield played the best football we have seen in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter the morale slipped and the half time score was 25-0. The Tigers were unable to get it back and the Hillbillies slammed us, 44-0. Mansfield—0, Danville—50 Our team still needs to learn to function as a machine. The Little Johns read our plays, and with an offense like Danville had, our defense had to be planted firmly. It wasn’t. We were shut out, 30-0. (Danville was Class B State Champions in 1974.) Mansfield—7, Greenwood—37 Mansfield Tigers fought hard and the fourth quarter was the hardest fought. Mansfield finally got a score on the board. Our olfense and defense has trouble getting it together. We still weren’t working like a machine. We lost, 37-7. Junior Fullback I’bil Maker, Junior Halfback Greg Moore, Junior End Mansfield—6, Booneville—39 The Tigers lei ihem run the score up in the first quarter. Our morale was crippled the entire first half. The second half was en- tirely different. The Tiger offense brought the boom down with a rookie named Phil Baker who plunged 13 plays fora total of% yards.
