The beginning of self-expression and understanding can come only with the mastery of oneâs own language. At Mansfield High, each student is required to take four years of English. English is taught this year by Miss Baker, Mrs. Goss, and Miss Brenda Browning. In grammar classes, the student is taught the mechanics and precision use of our language. Clarity and conciseness in writing are stressed, as well as definite comprehension of word meanings and usage. Speech is also offered by Mrs. Blanton and French is taught by Miss Brenda Browning. Science Are science courses just for âbrains?â Mansfield High students donât think so. They know that each division of the natural sciences, physics, biology, and chemistry, is truly interesting and basically simple. They know that a knowledge of science can benefit a future housewife or hanker, as well as a future chemist or physicist. Biology is the study of all forms of life, both plant and animal. This study includes an introduction to scientific classification and natural history. Biology students are assisted in their studies by modern lab equipment and visual aids. Physics deals with energy rather than with matter. Students are taught to recognize the principles of physics manifested daily in the behavior of all forms of energy, including heat, light, and sound. Experiments and demon- strations supplement text and lecture materials in the class- room. At Mansfield science is taught by Mr. Charles Vincent and Mr. E. A. Bay. Social science is history, Social science is human rela- tions. Social science is psychology. Social science is the science of people. World history begins with the dawn of civilization and traces manâs progress through the ages up to the present. American history deals only with the history of our coun- try, giving us a clear idea of how our democratic processes came to be. Civics and government give a concise treatment to the laws, documents and institutions of our nation. Needless to say, knowledge of these subjects is essential to every re- sponsible citizen. History at Mansfield is taught by Mr. Cochran and Mr. Blanton. Mr. Blanton teaches junior high geography and civics. Mr. Cochran teaches American History, W'orld History, and American Government. Our History classes occasionally have guest speakers. MUttVttt Ac uxruf - Study '%cM The study hall has a very pleasant atmosphere in which the students do all of their studying. This year, the encyclo- pedias have been moved into the study hall, therefore, causing less confusion than having to go to the reference room for the needed materials. In the library, a wide selection of fiction suited to every need and reading level is available. To assure that all students will receive the greatest l enefit from the library, Mrs. Blanton will allow a person to re-check a book after the period given to return it and keep it for a longer period of time. Books which are much in demand are placed on reserve at the request of the teacher or student. .Mrs. Blanton is in charge of the library. She is assisted each period by students who are willing to give up their study periods. Mrs. Simpson is in charge of the Study Hall. HTrAlB - 7%a e K ztic4, In todayâs world, math is used in doing almost everything, whether it be shopping at the local supermarket or planning a multi-hillion-dollar dam. At MHS there is a course in mathematics to suit every need. Plane geometry deals not only with the laws governing planes and the figures in them, hut also with the presen- tation of logical and acceptable proof. Algebra II reviews and extends the knowledge gained in Algebra I. It treats formulas, equations, graphs and numerical trigonometry. General math and business math lend skill and facility in the use of numbers for everyday calculations. Whether or not one plans to take mathematics as a career, these courses offer a good background in practical arithmetic. Mathematics develops the power to think logically; for this reason, if for no other, every student should include math in his program of study. At MHS Math is taught by Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Carmack. l oaztio t zC ScUccattM Business Education is concerned with two major aspects of education: (1) The knowledge, attitudes and noil-vocational skills needed by persons to be effective in their personal economic life and in their understanding of our economic system. (2) The vocational knowledge and skills needed for initial employment and for advancement in a business career. Our program deals with both of these factors. Miss Barbara Browning teaches these courses. Instruction in agriculture emphasizes the development of specific knowledge and skill necessary for successful participation in an agricultural occupation. A desirable balance is maintained between the instructional activities of the classroom and farm-mechanic shop and the practical experience provided on the farm and in non-farming agricultural activities of the community. Mr. Sam Taylor teaches these courses. Home Economics is used in almost any field that you go into. These courses are electives, hut most people take them at least two years. Home Economics deals with Home Life and yet encourages recreation and activities mixed with home life. Mrs. Sue Ward teaches these courses.
