Following commissioning at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on 24 January 1970 USS MANITOWOC jomed the U S Pacific Fleet at her homeport ol Long Beach. California Later the same year, and again m 1971, she deployed to the Western Pacific, where she participated m operations involving redeployment of troops in Vietnam In early 1972 MANITOWOC again deployed to Vietnamese waters as a unit of the Amphibious Ready Group MANITOWOC participated m many vertical amphibious assaults by Vietnamese Marines and provided a ready platform from which over 300 US Marines stood ready to deploy if needed During these operations the ship logged over 500 helicopter landings, a first for a ship of this class MANITOWOC was transferred to the Atlantic Fleet in January 1973 and has operated out of her present homeport of Little Creek. Norfolk. Virginia ever smce During her first year on the East Coast. MANITOWOC made a short European cruise and a Mediterranean deployment Subsequently m 1974. the Great Spirit made two cruises to the Caribbean as a part of the Caribbean Ready Group and for operations m Panama. Ecuador, and Columbia In earty 1975. the ship entered a shipyard for its first regular overhaul MANITOWOC deployed, m September 1976, to Northern Europe to participate m Team Work 76 the largest NATO exercise to date In April 1977 MANITOWOC again deployed to the Mediterranean as part of MARG 1-77 From November 1978 until July 1979 MANITOWOC was at Norfolk Naval Shipyard for her second regular overhaul Afterwards. MANITOWOC made a Mediterranean Cruise with MARG 1-81 In May 1982. MANITOWOC returned to the Mediterranean as part of MARG 2-82 During that historic deployment. MANITOWOC participated in the support force evacuation operation of civilians from Beirut in June. In August 1982. MANITOWOC deployed her Marines and their equipment ashore as part of the Multinational Peace Keeping Force Operations in Beirut Two and one half weeks later, MANITOWOC and her Marines departed only to return in September in the wake of the Palestinian Refugee Camp massacres On 1 November, MANITOWOC was relieved by MARG 3-83 MANITOWOC received the Navy Unit Commendation for her actions m these operations In 1983 MANITOWOC became the first diesel ship to pass the diesel operational propulsion exam In October, she deployed with MARG 1-84 which was diverted to participate in operation URGENT FURY in Grenada In Grenada. MANITOWOC deployed her Marines who assisted in securing Grenada and Carnacou. Upon completion in Grenada. MANITOWOC continued to Beirut where she deployed her Marines and supported the 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit until April 1984. when she returned to Little Creek

CDR. JOHN CDR. John D. Kolata was born in Kewanee, III. on 4 Aug 41. He enlisted in the Navy in 1959 and was selected for the Fleet NROTC Program. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1964 and reported to his first boat. USS SEA LION (LPSS-315). After Officers Submarine School, CDR. Kolata was assigned to the USS GROUPER (AGSS-214), followed by an engineering tour aboard USS SEA LEOPARD (SS-483). Following that tour CDR. Kolata had a two year tour in London, England as the Senior Briefing Officer for CINCUSNAVEUR. Leaving England he reported to USS WAHOO (SS-565) holding the Operations Officer billet, USS JOUETT (CG-029) was his next ship followed by shore duty as the Course Director for the Tactical Action Officer School in San Diego and then Executive Officer of USS AGERHOLM (DD-8260). His next tour was as a Branch Head at the Naval Military Personnel Command, detailing all engineering and hull ratings. Before reporting to USS MANITOWOC, CDR. Kolata attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. CDR. Kolata is married to the former Carol Currier of Allen Park, Michigan. They have four children: John, Christine, Joanne and Edward.
