GRENADA OPERATION URGENT FURY As you turn eastward to new assignments in the Mediterranean, I want to pass to all the men of the Independence CVBG and MARG 1-84 my heartiest thanks for a job well done in Grenada. You were diverted from normal peacetime operations to participate in a highly important political military operation in a hostile environment with only a short time for planning. By your professional performance, you proved your readiness for battle and highlighted the continuing effectiveness of the Navy-Marine Corps team. The operation which you have just concluded so successfully demonstrated the legitimate use of Naval power in pursuit of national objectives. Each of you can be proud of your role. You helped rescue our fellow citizens in danger and aided in restoring to the people of Grenada the ability to choose their own destiny in an environment of security and freedom. God Bless You. ADMIRAL WATKINS, CNO . 28

V I am proud of you, each soldier, sailor, airman and marine of our joint task force. Your gallantry and dedication have the respect of the nation and the applause of the free world. In the exceptionally short period you had to respond to national direction, and the intensity of preparations for combat, you have excelled. This has been most evident by the success of operations in the field, at sea and in the air. You, I ' m sure, take great pride in your accomplishments of these past days. Each of us, as well, reveres the full measure of devotion given courageously by those friends fallen and wounded. The joy and relief expressed by the Grenadians in their reprieve from a reign of terror indeed justifies the saying that for those who fight for it, freedom has a flavor the protected never know. My utmost respect, may God bless each of you, BRAVO ZULU. Vice Admiral Metcalf COMMANDER SECOND FLEET
