J-Hop 3 Hi-Y 4 Annual Staff Class Minutes The first regular meeting of the class of '48 was held September, 1944, with Phil Nowak presiding as president and -Alice Kruse pinch-hitting as vice president. joan Dahlgren was elected to fulhll the office of secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Dryer and Mr. Capper had been selected to maintain order when things got out of hand. A motion was made that we have a class get-together. It was seconded and voted upon. The party was held in April in the high school gym. It was then moved by Mr. Bendle that the meeting be adjourned until Septem- ber, 1945. It was seconded by the entire student body. The second regular meeting of the class of '48 was held September, 1945. This year the class had selected LaVerne Bachinski to lead them. He was backed up by Bernard Anderson, vice president, Jem Anderson, secretary, and Carol Battige, treasurer. Mr. Capper and Mrs. Dryer again watched over us and gave us a helping hand when needed. During the meeting many of our members were asked to service on such things as the football team, basketball team, dramatics, and track team. Our boys' basketball team won the school champion- ship. The meeting was adjourned on suggestion of Mr. Bendle. Future busi- ness of the class will be taken up September, 1946. The third regular meeting of the class of '48 was held September, 1946. Ernie Meier called -the meeting to order. Marilyn Sonnenberg was elected to occupy the vice president's office. Jeanne Hanson took minutes and carried on all class correspondence while Orlene Brooks took care of the money. Mrs. Dryer left us and Miss Tautges and Mr. Capper continued the job of supervis- ing us. Again many of our members took an active part in school activities. The biggest event of the meeting was the J-Hop, of which the theme was Fantasy in Fairylandf' A report was read by Lorna Albertson, general chair- man of the affair. A presentation of metals and trophies was made to both our girls' and boys' basketball teams for winning the school championship. On the motion of Mr. Bendle the meeting adjourned in june, 1947. The final meeting of the class of '48 was held September, 1947. LaVerne Bachinski was again elected to lead us. Don Plowman was chosen vice presi- dent and Carol Battige again took over as secretary-treasurer. It was voted that we take our skip-trip May 9, 10, and 11, 1948, and that we take the lake trip. A great many of our members took an active part in sports, dramatics, band and chorus. Don Plowman was chosen as the outstanding football player of the year. A report on the Senior Prom was asked for, but great secrecy is involved with this affair. Our final business came on june 3, 1948, when ninety-five proud seniors walked across the stage of the auditorium and received their diplomas. The meeting was adjourned by Mr. Bendle and true friends said adieu to old M. H. S. 21 MMR leutw.. Q,. k.. ,., R lph E lx ff Vice President. The Manistee High School Rifle Club has now been an active organization for eighteen years. In those many years Mr. Simons has turned out many line riflemen. Cf these many students- men of arms - there are some who are especially good shots. On many of their Thursday night sessions someone usually succeeds in missing the target and putting a few slugs into the west wall. CHave you ever seen the holes?J ' With all joking aside let's give our thanks to Vic for teaching us the safety of rifles and their correct use. , ' Upper picture fiitlllflvillgjl Mr. Simons, Miller, Gillespie, Showalter, Arnold, Amor, Veine, Adamski Vanclermolen, Hahn, Janowiak, Hubbell, Coombs, Christiansen, Mack, Rynearson. fSilii1zg2.' HIY The Hi-Y, another of our permanent societies, seems to have been especially active this year. In addition to its regular meetings, which have fostered some hne discussions of contemporary affairs the members have been active in the local Easter Seal campaign, soliciting in home rooms and placing containers in the stores. They have behind them two social events - a hay ride and the annual boy-girl banquet. They are also planning a picnic at Potter's Bridge in May. Presidents. ,.... ,,,. . . .s,,.... P , 4 IN SESSIONy SEPTEI GLEN HUNTER DON PLOWMAN Coach Hunter again turned out teams deserving of pride and praise. He has found a way into our hearts through our athletic program and has made Manistee's teams widely respected. The people's choice! Chosen as captain of the 1947 Chippewas, Don went on to be selected the most valu- able player by Manistee's fans. He played a line aggres- sive game both defensively and offensively. He was awarded a trophy by the Manistee Butterfield Theatres to have his name inscribed and placed in the school trophy case. 48 THROUGH OCTOBER Pictured in football Cstandingh Hunter, Jaratz, Plowman, Schubert, Brzezniak. The 1948 Chippewas met the Cadillac Vikings for the opening game and two more evenly matched teams were never pitted against one another. The Chips knocked on the door of opportunity three times but each time the offense bogged. The Chips in the final minutes had a chance to hir pay dirt but fate saw otherwise. MANISTEE 2 - PETOSKEY 15 Manistee looked sluggish in 13 to 2 loss to Petoskey. The Chips played unimpressive ball in the first de- feat of its regular season. Our boys could not put on a sustained drive. Our only score came when alert Dick Crampton scored a safety by nailing a ball car- rier in the end zone. SCHUBERT PICARDAT LUDINGTON 45-MANISTEE 19 Orioles romp over Manistee on fog bound gridiron. Manisteeis traditional rivals, the Ludington Orioles, invaded Maniscee and went home with a 45 to 19 triumph. The game was played under unusual circum- stances. A dense fog plus smoke from the city dump made the visibility almost zero. Plowtnan scored early in the game and only those spectators in the end zone saw it. The only other scores came on passes from Schubert to Brzezniak and Picardat. MANISTEE 26- TRAVERSE CITY 7 Chippewas display unit perfection in defeating T. C. Everything right, nothing wrong was the Chip- pewas go-word in downing the Trojans at Thrilby Field. It was doubtful if Manistee would have been beaten by an even better team than Traverse City that night. The lirsr score came when Dick Crampton re- JOHNSTON ECKOFF PIECHOWIAK JACH 1 l I 0 0 www.. - BY HUNT CRAMPTON covered a blocked punt in the end zone for a safety. After that Manistee was very much in. Brzezniak really burned up the turf, once on a 60 yard touch down sprint. Manistee's other scores were made by Plowman, Jaratz and a pass from Brzezniak and Picar- dat. MANISTEE 2-BIG RAPIDS 6 Big Rapids puts on a punting show in downing Manistee. Manistee could never get rolling at Big Rapids and ended up on the short end of a 6-2 score. The Chips once found themselves on the one foot line but failed to score. Our score came when their puntet stepped out of the end zone, i l MALLISON - MANISTEE 0-MT. PLEASANT 14 Mt. Pleasant's line checks Manistee in 14 to 0 win. Coach Hunter said, That's the best football team we've seen all year. And everyone who saw the game agreed with him. The Oilers were up against a never say die band of Chips and it proved to be a good game. LUDINGTON 13 - MANISTEE 6 Chippewas lose to Ludington in sleet storm 13 to 6. Manistee's final 1947 football game was played in a blinding sleet storm and the results proved fatal. Plowman, star back, scored the only touchdown. RESERVES Standing: R. Smith, J. McKinley, J. Physical examinations were required and insurance was carried by the whole squad. Mr. Bedingham and Mr. Arnold coached the squad which numbered thirty-three at the end of the season. Much time was spent on fundamentals. Inter-squad games were played, also games with the freshmen. Head Coach Hunter looked the squad over numerous times and was very enthusiastic about the many future varsity players who were getting their preliminary training in the seventh and eighth grades. A Manistee fans will see many of these players in action on the varsity squad in the next few years. 53 IN SESSION DECE Chips doW1f'iClass A, G. R. Catho- lic Central 4 1 -3 8.
