Smiling and aft ab e M Roland Swaim teaches com merce and serves as Student Council ad viser He is complet ing his second year at MHS One might think that Mrs. Maxine Masten secretary to the principal Aust signs excuse cards but actually she does everything from tak- ing care of sick stu- dents to making out Federal tax reports. Teaching the girls to make it them selves is Miss Kath aryn Zipse who has clothing and home economics classes Joint sponsor t FHA she is always ready to otter advice o lend a hel ing hand Not new to MHS er is the likeable Mr D C Marshall He teaches wood work and has the dis tinctvon ot having taught at MHS long er than any other teacher that being 28 years will Among the new and popular teachers of MHS is Mr John Buller Mathematics is his forte and he is assistant sponsor ot the Hi Y and of the sophomore class Miss Frances Mc Kenna teaches Latin and Spanish classes Little but mighty her pleasant smile and sparkling wi make her every bodys amiga New to MHS but not to Manhattan is Mrs Vesta Kerr study hall supervisor who claims Kansas State as her alma mater Personable and tolerant she easily makes friends with students under her charge ...-I if A popular teacher with a wonderful voice is Mr. Elbert Fly who directs all choral groups and has charge ot various musical productions given throughout the year.

Mr Rex Conner teaches band and or chestra in Junior and Senior High and director of instru mental music in the public schools He is a talented musician himself and knows how to bring out the best in his musical groups Another veteran of MHS teaching is Mr. Charles Rapp, head of the com- merce department. ln addition to a full schedule of classes, he finds' time to serve as head spon- sor of the senior class and to direct the commerce club. A. J hs Miss Anna Mar Iey head sophomore sponsor h s a full schedule teaching five sophomore Eng Iish classes It seems she knows almost everything there is to know from verbs to Shakespeare Mr J W Taylor is vocational agricul ture instructor and FFA sponsor. Well liked by his exclu- sively male classes h is finishing is second year in Man- atan. Miss Clara Spil man secretary to the Board of Educa tion works in the superintendent s of i e from ei o c ock un il ive every day She keeps records gives infor mation and helps carry on the school program in Manhat an Mr Ralph Rogers Y s p o n s r teaches physics solid geometry and trigonometry. S u- dents say they cant help learning things in his classes because of the manner ' which he presents the subject. ,A e, 1 'L 'T' MHS is fortunate in having as i a rian Mrs Madge Busch who is tireless in helping students and teachers find good books and ref erence material af A newcomer this year is Miss Virginia Klemp, girls' physi- cal education in- structor. Tall and stately, she looks the p a r t a n d i s a dandy gym teach- er the girls say.

A friendly and helpful teacher Miss Marjorie Ber ger Teaching Amer ican history is not her only duty as she is head junior class Sponsor Putting on the Junior Senior is an annual affair for er 1,11 if lim- Teaching ro u r junior English classes and journalism Mrs Mildred Sykes has to work long a ft e r school hours. - though she is busy, she always takes a personal interest in her students. 30 ti-1 Wad' Handling one of the most responsible lobs at MHS is Mrs Taylor Smith who is head of the cafeteria The number of her noon customers has averaged about l35 a day Finishing his third year as head football coach is Mr William Slayton who has turned out one championship club and has always had teams respected by other schools Under the expert direction f Miss Jessie Dobson art in structor students are able to create beau tiful works of art An artist herself she is always willing to help others learn The general shop classes are under the capable instruction of Mr John Truax who is well liked by his boys The typical fashionable cars around MHS owe their existence to im Mr Herbert Mil Ier is the man behind much of the school s printed matter The Mentor grade cards programs and acti vity tickets are only a few of the things which result from the hard work of his printing classes A busy teacher is Mr Rrchard Storer Besides teaching ge- ometry mechanical drawing and sci- ence, he is assistant football coach. As faculty photographer he is responsible for most of the pictures in the Blue M.
