The uniforms are royal blue, with white trimming, and white plumes on the hats. A new major- ette uniform and three twirlers uniforms were also purchased. Two benefit concerts were presented by the band on January 3l and April l7, and the band helped the vocal department present the Christmas Choral Concert. Also included on the band's calendar was playing for college and high school football games, high school basketball games, the Eisenhower Homecoming, the Kan- sas Free .Fair at Topeka, the barbecue, out-of-town football games, and several parades. The band also had a booth at the Junior High Carnival. Under Mr. Rex Conner's able direction, the band presented a marching maneuver at each football game. One of the most difficult was Uncle Sam in Review, which ,included seven different formations. Drum majorette this year was Phyllis Foster, with twirlers Ann Cleavinger, Mary Ellen Parsons, and Cora Lee Buckles. Another innovation this year was the election of band officers who organized ticket sales and directed the activities of the band. They were as follows: Bob Lundquist, president, Mary Beth Sieh, vice-president, Phtyllis Foster, secretary, and Ruth Bennett, treasurer. Hoover, Acker, Hiser, Coolidge, Reitz, Hooper. Med ' The Robed Choir is probably the outstanding vocal group in MHS. They have a long standing reputation of being tops in high school vocal groups. This year's Robed Choir was no exception. The Choir consists of fifty-one members, chosen by competitive tryouts. They rehearse three one-hour class periods a week. Under the able direction of Mr. Elbert M. Fly, the Choir'i'net success at every turn. Their initial appearance of the year was at the D.A.R. meeting held here in October. One outstanding appearance of the year was the Christmas Concert, The Meaning of Christmas. A popular number was The Night Before Christmas. The climax of the program was the section entitled The True Meaning of Christmas, with the band and vocal department assisting. Other appearances by the Choir were made in the Thanksgiving and Easter assemblies, the Spring Concert, before Service Clubs, and in the Music Festival held here in April. Soloists for the Choir were Patricia Hale, soprano, Esther Acker, soprano, Jean Robinson, soprano, Roy Wilbur, baritone, Marion Socolofsky, tenor. On The l947 edition of the Manhattan Indians went through one of the most stormy and thrill-packed sea- sons a Manhattan squad has ever experienced. Losers by one touchdown in their first two games, the Braves changed character and soundly walloped their next two opponents to become serious contenders for the league flag. The first of three major disappointments came the next week when a one-touchdown loss drop- ped the Braves out of first. Thoroughly angered, the squad came back to swamp their next two opponents by convincing scores. Fortune refused to smile on the Manhattan side, however, and the final two games were lost to powerful teams that tied for the title. A breakdown of the games: Lawrence 19 MHS 13 An intercepted lateral gave the Lions the winning margin in this thriller. lt was really an lndian moral victory since Lawrence later was named No. l team in the state. Marysville 13 MHS 7 Bill Baker got into the habit of making long runs by sprinting 67 yards for our only score. The Bulldogs also were later ranked in the first ten. Chapman 7 MHS 18 Hal Cleavinger sparked this triumph, scoring two touchdowns and passing for the other. One of his touchdowns came on a 63 yard punt runback. Junction City 6 MHS 20 Cleavinger again! Bob Craig looked like an All- American for Clay. And those Unruh twinsl Clay be- came the champs, and they sure looked the part. Record crowd, too. Emporia 13 MHS 32 Baker ran wild and scored four touchdowns, in- cluding a 90 yard kickoff return. The crowd cheered Little John Frankenteld when he bent double back- wards trying to pass over the heads of the charging linemen. Abilene 7 MHS 20 Doesn't Baker ever get tired of running? Another great night tor a great ball player. The Cowboys were tougher than expected, but who cares? We won, didn't we? Frankenfeld tried another of his blooper passes. McPherson 19 MHS 6 We got the Batson Blues l Don Batson led a great Bullpup eleven to a surprising victory that knocked us out of the pennant race. We wore black to school next day. Salina 20 MHS 0 Remember Pankratz, Edmiston, Williams, and company? They combined to make it a sad night for the eleven seniors playing their last game for alma mammy. Not only did the improved Indians outdo last year's three league wins with four, but also racked up a duo in non-conference play. Sporting a new coach and new uniforms, the Braves presented some of the finest basketball wit- nessed around here for several years. The Indian roster included four Iettermen from the I946-47 season-Larry Blasing, Hal Cleavinger, Charles Doryland, and Marvin Schartau-and a number of players who had gained valuable experience on both the A and B squads. After dropping four close games at the start of the season, Coach Jay Payton's charges finally broke into the win column by downing the cellar-dwell- ing Chapman Irish 27-25. Their next scalp came when they overshadowed the favored Abilene quin- tet 4l-38. Hal Cleavinger and Marvin Schartau led the scoring with 14 and ll counters, respec- tively. The next unsuccessful foe to face the Braves was the yet winless Chapman five, who were dropped by a 39-35 score. Although they lost the next two, the courageous Indians' spirits were still undampened. Coming back they emerged victors in three successive contests with Emporia, a highly favored Lawrence five, and the Abilene Cowboys in a thrilling overtime contest. Guard George Bishop dunked in the winning two points while Larry Blasing held game scoring honors. Going into the regional tournaments at Emporia, the Braves drew as rivals the Emporia Spartans who handed them a stinging 44-3l defeat. Seven MHS seniors - Larry Blasing, George Bishop, Elmer Creviston, Charles Doryland, Jack Erwin, Dennis Evans, and Marvin Schartau-played their last games of high school basketball. Three successors - Hal Cleavinger, Tom Machin, and Bob Wickham - can be counted on to lead the I948-49 Tribe. '86 515 Payton and Bergman in pre-game conference. Coach Payton, in his first year as head basket- ball mentor, proved himself to have a type of bas- ketball which will be sure to win a championship some day soon. MHS ............,... MHS ......
