MANCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL MANCHESTER, CONNECTICUT VOLUME L —— a Oe eet terre ee a Sater rte PL Lie eee } put Manchester Alma Mater Life at Manchester High School is an endless march of experiences. It stands not still for the enchanted nor turns back for the reminiscent. Thus, on this golden anniversary of Somanhis, we pause momentarily to contemplate our past. Then, we set our course forward with the intent of capturing the spirit of the present and hope of the future! Ellen Frederickson and Bridget Blakemore disernmbark for another day at M.H.S. Thy Precepts E’re Shall Guide Us To take our place among the intelligent peoples of the world, it 1s necessary that we apply ourselves to our studtes. The goal of Manchester High School ts the production of thinking indwiduals who will uphold the American tradition in a world of growing complexity. Onward to Victory! Athletics at Manchester High School is more than just the nowse that the spectators make as they cheer for the goal or touchdown. Here at M.H.S. athletics means training, physically and emotionally. Nightly, sportsmen endeavor to build the skill so necessary for victory. More important, however they learn the true meanings of competition, to accept defeat gracefully as well as enjoy victory with humility. ‘a ik = ash a! ro a tp — ill Lenny Fava shows us a gym class of 50 years ago. Through extra-curricular actwitves, students at Manchester High School have the opportunity to enrich themselves and their school. They learn valuable skills through service activities and share thew ideas through creatwe endeavors. Most important, however, are the friendships that give fuller meaning to our education at M.H..S. I smiled and talked with the students as if they had been my old friends. To my amazement I found myself able to adjust in a world different from my own. Manchester and my friends will al- ways be a part of me. My years stay here is the realization of my desire to find out the truth of things I read and heard about the U.S. I underwent happy and sad experiences which I will never forget. A great distance separates my homeland from Manchester, but through letters, distance will not be a barrier. So I would like to hear from you sometime. Concepcion AFS ‘65 People to People — Long Distance This is the warm and friendly French family who welcomed me to their homeland, taught me their language, and made me their second daughter for one wonderful AFS summer. As a Frenchgirl- for-a-summer, I discovered a country of varied and surprising beau- ty, a friendly and affectionate people, and an awareness of age and the past which made me forget that history had ever belonged to musty textbooks. Most important, I became aware that there is so much that people can learn from each other, and so much to learn about other peoples and their ways of life. For this priceless experi- ence I would like to thank all of the people of Manchester and MHS who contributed to AFS. Merci mille fois; je ne l’oublierai jamais, moi! Betsey House 65 = 45 Teaching in a Turkish high school for boys this year under the Fulbright Teacher- Exchange Program gave me some new perspectives on life at Manchester High School. First of all. girls are a distinct asset to the morale and extra-curricular life of MHS. Secondly, the fabulous facilities possessed by MHS are not nearly as valuable as its teachers, for good education occurs even in the most meager of quarters. This year has been a marvelous experience for me in so many ways. My one regret is that I missed seeing my friends in the class of 1965 graduate. Jay R. Stager Hi to everyone — Gruess Gott!! This year at MHS was a very interesting one for me. I en- joyed my stay here very much. Thank you for the nice time I have spent in your school, of which everyone can be proud to be a member. It will be difficult to leave all of my new friends I have made during the school year. It was a wonderful experi- ence for me and I think that we should encourage more young people to join the exchange student program. ‘““How can there be misunderstanding, how can there be wars, if we know each other?” I would be very glad to hear from you and Manchester. which has become to me like another home. One of the most surprising things to me was the vast number of students marching through the halls between class periods, and I was especially impressed with the friendliness of MHS students and faculty. On this fiftieth anniversary of SOMANHIS, the 1965 staff would like to highlight the history of Manchester High School's yearbook. The first issue of the SOMANHIS EVENTS was a thin news and literary magazine which was pub- lished several times a year at the old South Man- chester High School. The magazine received its name from the first letters of the school’s name. Miss Fanny Rexford, who later became Mrs. Sidney Wheaton, was the first advisor. In 1922 senior pictures first appeared in the book. When Miss Ione Fellows became advisor in 1933, SOMANHIS be- came an annual, independent of the literary mag- azine, After twenty-eight years of service, Miss Fel- lows retired, turning the advisorship over to Mr. Jay R. Stager. This year, while Mr. Stager is in Turkey, Mrs. LaVerne Kelson is our club advisor. We would like to express our thanks to all the peo- ple who have helped us with the yearbook. Special thanks go to the many people who have made photo- graphic contributions, our advisor Mrs. Kelson, Mr. Ofiara, Mr, Saturnis, and Mr. Pinto of the Manchester Evening Herald, and the Loring Studios. The 1965 SOMANHIS has come to you after a year of preparation. Many things have changed since our first issue, but the aim, to preserve the present for the future, has remained the same. Here is the 1965 SOMANHIS! dg Fux A eeer) Co-editors Judy Frithsen and Connie Barrett devote many hours to SOM- ANHIS. SOMANHIS Marks 50th Anniversary SOMANHIS STAFF ROW J: J. Nielsen, P.
