Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1988 volume:

ACADEMICS A ten-page progress report? . and a little of this and a little of that . . . Why are we here? (A question often pondered during those times when we should be working on an assignment . . . or two . . . ) Well, let ' s see. We are here to strug- gle, to study like crazy . . . and get results. W e are here to ask lots of questions . . . and get answers. We draw conclusions with the help of a small but devoted faculty. We partici- pate in a wide variety of challenging extra-curricular sports and activities — from DECA to debate. Most of all, we are here to exercise our individuality and form our own opinions. Finally, it’s senior year and things are beginning to make sense. 2 4 FRIENDSHIP i What would you think if sang out of tune? Would you stand up and walk out on me? Lend me your ears and 111 sing you a song And 111 try not to sing out of key . I get by with a little help from my friends. - The Beatles Amy 2 ... or is that Cybil to the first power? ATHLETICS ] At MHS, sports are more than just a way to pass the afternoon. It is not easy to set aside time for grueling practice, where one learns difficult plays, and polishes skills. Manchester pride is clearly shown in the overwhelming par- ticipation of players and in the turnout of loyal fans. Regardless of the sport, dedication and hard work pay off for all of the Hornet teams. D ' ya know what this paint looks like? Mm ft. A . i p!V , v if- 5 L ' ' j2p r ' ' 1 MrTaHPr v y m =■ - :.!. Oh, so this is how you measure IQ ' s. AROUND TOWN The BMW? I ' m allergic to schoolwork. Legendary laughs. Hey Dee- how about a ride in my truck? Or should we take the Cordoba? Before and after school, students can be found on the job or just out and about. Memories of Manchester include much more than those hours spent in school. Popular sites for in- formal gatherings include the library wall, the parking lot at Brown’s or Richdale’s, spinning the beach, eat- ing at Beach St, Peggy’s, Coffee Cup, or catching a train to Boston on a rainy Saturday .... Did someone say Laser? TIME OUT Say what? What ' s so funny about military school? Yeah, this must be that cute freshman’s locker. Take a deep breath, the big test is over . . . Stretch out on the senior benches, spend some time roaming the halls, or dare to cross the “black line of death.” Risk catching a few Z’s during class or sneaking out to the smoking area. It’s easy to blow off math home- work to fool around in study hall. Go grab a cup of coffee — it’s a senior pri- viledge. The time spent not working is an important part of high school, too! 13 THE CLASS OF 1988 GETTING IT TOGETHER The senior field trip to Wingaersheek Beach was our first big indication that this year is special. The Project Adven- ture dory row, organized by Mrs. Men- tus, was a success despite the boat shortage. On the beach, committees were formed to tackle upcoming fun- draisers and events. A positive feeling grew out of the day. Senior enthusiasm continued to grow during Spirit Week. Phenominal partic- ipation made the Class of 88 stand apart from the rest. The halls were decked with streamers, posters, and construction-paper mortar boards. Fri- day’s pep rally began with the class marching in to “Pomp and Circum- stance”, followed by three-hundred bal- loons dropping onto the crowd and the presentation of our class rap. The senior class is finally pulling to- gether. No, things are not perfect, but are they ever? We can overcome our problems. We can not let them stand in our way. This is our year to excel and to leave good memories behind us. The Thinker. Road Warrior and Copilots (the Before shot) Ah, Kiddies! We’re so cute. Oh no . . . Don’t you dare . . . Oh, a trouble’s a ton or a trouble ' s an ounce, Or a trouble is what you make it- And it isn ' t the fact that you’re hurt that counts, But only how did you take it? You are beaten to earth? Well, well, what ' s that? Come up with a smiling face. It’s nothing against you to fall down flat; But to lie there- that’s disgrace. The harder you’re thrown, why the higher you’ll bounce; Be proud of your blackened eye; It isn ' t the fact that you ' re licked that counts, It ' s how did you fight, and why? And tho you be done to death, what then? If you battled the best you could. If you played your part in the world of men, Why the Critic will call it good. The troupe also enjoyed the Brandeis University student mati- nee series for 1987-1988. Plans for the final show of the season at MHS call for a revival of The Glass Menagerie.” -John Stuart DEBATE “1987 and 1988 have seen the greatest successes in Manches- ter Debate Team history. In June, 1987, after winning the National Tournament of Champions in Lexington, Kentucky, Sarah Gannett and Zach Leber went undefeated in fifteen rounds of debate to win the National Forensic League Cham- pionship in Cincinnati, Ohio. Zach and Sarah became the first team in the history of the NFL’s triple elimination tournament to win the tournament without a single loss. In finals, they beat the ST. Mark’s School of Dallas, Texas, on an 8-1 decision of the judges. Throughout the 1986-1987 season Manchester’s second team of Kirsten Bolten and Andrea Marston were consistent in winning trophies and qualifying for elimination debates. In Lincoln- Douglas Debate Manchester enjoyed Gretchen Crosby’s quarterfinal showing at the National Tournament of Champions 1987. Two other debators competed at TOC: Craig Chew and Amy Spence. In 1988 Gretchen Crosby once again achieved national recognition by winning the National Round-Robin Debates at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Manchester also competed in New York City, Atlanta, Georgia, and at TOC 1988 in Kentucky. The team continues to grow, with excellent novices showing great promise for the future.” -Tim Averill Coach Tim Averill, Tim Smith, Leslie Fatalo, Craig Chew, Mil Lawler, Heather Michalowski, Ed Canty, Martha Arnaud. Individuals were able to increase their performance level as the season progressed, and times dropped significantly. Amanda Smith had an outstanding year with five first place finishes and a ninth place finish in the Cape Ann League meet. The team finished eighth in the Cape Ann League for the Season. Although we will miss Amanda and Heather next year we look for the underclasswomen to continue to improve. The boys had one of the best seasons that Manchester Cross Country team has had in ten years. The team started off at a slow pace but as the season progressed picked it up and finished it in flying col- ors with three wins and a fine showing in the Cape Ann League Open. During the regular season, under the coaching of Dominic Priolo, the team won five and lost seven in the strong Cape Ann League which put the Hornets in a tie for the sixth spot in the standings. Coach Priolo was elated when Aaron Canale was the only senior among a group of young men. The team closed out the season in grand style and in the Open surprised all with their fifth place finish. This day belonged to Aaron who ran a very strong race and finished in 1 5th spot which is very good as he was competing against over a hundred runners. This time it was his to remember and that he will. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Coach Priolo, Peter Villa, Andrew Morgan, David Pepper, Aaron Canale, Ben Dott, Leo Keating, Johnny Olaes. David Johnson. To The Class of 1988 I have always been puzzled by your concern that your class is not “together.” From my perspective, you have demonstrated a remarkable ability to organize and work cooperatively. If the concern were not so wide-spread, 1 would say it lacked validity. My final analysis is that you are much more “together” than you give yourselves credit for. Your in- dividualism is a strength, not a weakness. Your greatest strength, however, is not your individual- ism, but your genuine desire to go further. The high expectations you set for your senior class community might even be called idealistic. You might not like that label, but I think it is true. And, 1 must say, that I am pleased that you will carry this desire for harmony and synergy into the world beyond Manchester High School. We can certainly use your high aspirations. William L. Foye DEDICATION The class of 1988 has a history of being a class of individuals. When Mrs. Tammy Mentus took on the job of class advisor she assumed a task of immense proportions. It has not been easy, but hard work and determination have paid off with the success of our magazine drive, car wash, and carnation sale. Most notably, Mrs. Mentus orga- nized the Wingaersheek Beach Day field trip which initiated a cohesive senior spirit throughout the class. We thank you for your endless patience and sup- port as we have grown and matured over these past four years. The 1988 Anchor is dedicated to Mrs. Tammy Mentus. 117 Ripple Reach Out Your Hand If Your Cup Is Empty If Your Cup Is Full May It Be Again Let It Be Known; There Is A Fountain That Was Plot Made By The Hands Of Men There Is A Road, Pio Simple Highway Between The Dawn And The Dark Of Plight And If You Go, Pio One May Follow That Fath Is For Your Steps Alone Ripple, In Still Water, When There Is Pio Febhle Tossed Pio Wind To Blow -Jerry Garcia, Robert Hunter Wasted Time Looking Around Us We Can See Our Lives Before Us Running Rings Around The Way It Used To Be We Are Older now We Have More Than What We Wanted But We Wish That We Had Started Long Before We Did And There ' s So Much Time To Make Up Everywhere You Turn Time We Have Wasted On The Way So Much Water Moving Underneath The Bridge Let The Water Come And Carry Us Away SPECIAL WELL DONE BIF We love you Bren!! -Mum, Dad, Lisa, C.J., and Maica!
