87 MANCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL 1987 ANCHOR MANCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS 01944 Principal’s Message “The class of ' 87, the class of ' 87, the class of ' 87 . . . ” Like the popular song that gets stuck in your brain and replayed for days, the recurring video that seems non-erasable for me is the scene at the fall sports rally in 1983. As a new principal 1 watched Mr. Nalley put the crowd through the ceremonial war chants and came away with one overwhelming perception-that freshman class has “it.” I was not sure what “it” was. Certainly it was spirit, pride and passion. These were the superficial indicators, but perhaps, I thought, it was also a hint of depth and a fullness of character. I was right. You have had much success both academically and athletically. You have been leaders who have constantly set a tone that was positive and reasonable. When budget problems threatened extra-curricular programs your class made a user-fee program work. But, most importantly, you have done all of this with enthusiasm and a keen sense of self-improvement that will always be highly respected by the faculty and administration. We all hope that we had an influence on your success and that we were of significant help. You alone, however, developed the style with which your accomplishments were achieved. 1 am still not certain how to define the “it” that you collectively possess. The fact that most agree the “it exists is testimony in and of itself. My hope is that you will take your share of the special set of attributes given to your class, and translate this essence into a life that is as full and as spirited as the last four years. 7 1 Dedication This year’s Anchor is dedicated to a man who was special to all of us. He was our teacher and our friend. Not only did he tell us in sixth grade about the shocking changes we would experience in Junior High School, but also advised us on the pressures of the “Big School.” Even dur- ing our senior year six years later, he was still teaching us, by showing that any prob- lem can be dealt with through hope and prayers. He was also ou r friend. He sup- ported us by giving us guidance and love throughout our years at Manchester. Laughing and crying with us, he gained our respect throughout our development. He will be remembered as our friend for- ever. His presence among us will be sorely missed, but we will always cherish his memory. We, the Class of 1987, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Richard Pomeroy. 3 e£j Throughout our years at Manchester High School we have grown together and formed a bond as a class. Whenever we turn our heads we know that someone will be there to make the job easier. With extra help in class, a pat on the back, or even a simple smile, we share the load. Comparing class notes always made that chemistry quiz a bit easier or that English test a little more bearable. As classmates we have heard hundreds of oral reports and if we really did not hear them, we did our darndest to fake it. When you did not understand how to conjugate that verb, you knew someone would, and that they would be willing to help you see the light. We have struggled through the tests and reports that seemed to never end. Finally, when you thought you could not listen to another moment of history, the clock read two thirty. However, it did not end there. We put on our sweats and laced up our sneakers to take to the fields or courts. With the coach directing us from the sideline we worked together to get that goal or those two extra points. We worked as a team. Most of us have been together for twelve years now. We met on the first day of Kindergarden and have been friends ever since. After sixth grade we crossed the bridge from the Memorial School and together began our six year journey to graduation. We spent those years working hard, study- ing, making friends, having fun, and growing into our eventual role as k seniors. And on weekends, there we were together again. Whether it be at Singing Beach, a high school dance or a Saturday night at the movies followed by a roast beef sandwich late night” at Nick’s, there were always members of the class of ' 87 to be found together. This class was a group of people who were unified. All classes have bonds and friendships. This is hardly unique. The extent to which our class was able to come together as a whole so frequently was special. The respect that members of the class were able to show for the talents of individuals, whether these talents were skating, swimming, writ- ing, debating, or art, was unique. What it really came down to was that the Class of 1987 was a class who cared. We have made memories that can never be replaced. From sharing blocks to sharing lunches to sharing problems, we have grown to be friends and to be a family. We are family. wmr y - 4 1 A 1 j L; ■ rft - We have grown up in a time where the young Preppies of yesterday have developed into the notorious up-and-coming Yuppies in today’s business world. T rends come and go, so that the only consistancy about “the ‘in’ thing” is that it is always changing. As a group, we are not pre- occupied with keeping up with the fads. We are the generation of “Come on, Ma, this is the Eighties.” We are concerned with the modern day and the issues it presents. Fashion is dictated not by fad but by personal choice. Op and Jams represent surfing and summer sun. Esprit and Benneton popularize bright colors and prints. Suddenly it seems as though everyone is wearing Reebok shoes. Swatch comes out with colorful watches and then a line of clothing. Back from the past, paisley prints have made a comeback. Girls are wearing hair clips and banana combs. The 80’s has no music phenomenon like the Beatles of the 60’s. Instead groups soar to the top and then seem to drop off the charts. The “top 40” is constantly changing as we flip around the radio dial from ‘BCN to ’FNX to ’ZOU. Music of all kinds is popular from Madonna to Squeeze to the Violent Femmes. The enduring groups include music from the Talking Heads, Phil Collins, and Wham, and that of the Grateful Dead. When we go out to the movies it might be to see Rambo II, Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or Stand By Me. Or perhaps we instead rent an older popular movie for the VCR such as Risky Business, Sixteen Candlesor Friday the 1 3th. If a movie isn’t in stock, maybe there’s something good on T V. Popular shows include, “The Bill Cosby Show,” “Family Ties,” “Cheers,” “Moonlighting,” “Night Court,” and “Hill Street Blues.” Nothing stays the same for too long anymore. The movies we go to see may only be on a limited run, the television shows we watch could be cancelled next fall, and the clothes that we wear might be unavailable in the stores next season having been replaced with something “bigger, brighter, or better. As we change, so do the fashions. While we might follow the trends today, the class of 1987 is destined to be the trendsetters of tomorrow.
