PUBLIC LIBRARY MANCHESTER, MASS 01944 m r 2 This year, the class of 1985 would like to dedicate its yearbook to Kevin McCoy. Ke- vin has been a symbol to all of us, a symbol of courage and dedication. Through all that he has faced, he has remained unselfish and even cheerful. Kevin has made great contributions to Man- chester Jr. -Sr. High School-dribbling the Hornet’s basketball team to glory and quar- terbacking the football team to victory after victory. We will miss Kevin ' s name among the M’s” at the graduation of the class of 1985. But although he will not be seated among us, spiritually he will be with all of us, for we will all be thinking of him, wishing him luck in his future and knowing that he will succeed. Like nomads of the plains, the debate team was forced to employ all modes of transportation in order that it could traverse New England in search of competition. And like devout pilgrims, the debaters were rewarded for their efforts with considerable success and material benefit. Mr. Averill continues to lead the team with an intellect and vigor appropriate for his age. though his grip on the team was often threatened by the daring Fearsome Foursome. Their behav- ior. and that of the authentic and pseudonovices of the younger gen- eration has continued to entertain the varsity establishment. There was a large number of young members. Their performance promises a successful future for the team. Captained by seniors Lisa Dunn, Lisa Hall, and junior Andrea Maio the team had an enjoyable year under the direction of new coach Tammy Mentus. Consistent top performers were Jessica Hayes, Heather Michalowski, and Ka- tina Brown, all who have many years on the team ahead of them. The boy ' s cross-country team once again attended a full schedule of meets meets this season. Starting off slow, the team had a disappointing season in terms of record. However, the record does not adequately reveal the enjoyment and improvement attained by every member. Led by tri-captains Mike Brown, Steve Rooney, and Peter Hellwig, the team showed their true force by placing fifth out of twelve teams at the CAL meet, wrapping up the season. Coach Herb Schlegel The varsity basketball team suf- fered a disappointing year in terms of its 7-9 record, but expe- rienced an enjoyable and fulfill- ing season. BASKSZBMX AVWES Tff Despite their youth and inexperience this year’s J.V. team posted a 7- 10 record in the Cape Ann League, losing several close games at the buzzer or in overtime. A great deal of effort, leadership, and dedica- tion has gone into this team, and from all that work we’ve become really strong.” Strong in- deed-, in a recent Cheerleading 500 ranking, the Manchester JV Cheerleaders were placed among the nation’s best — with extremely high scores in the persona projection and team spir- it categories. . . . and In the tension of the game. At a light moment in practice . . . The strength and depth of the team,” said Knox, is really reflected in the attention we’ve gotten from the national cheerleading circuit. Progressive, nouveau-cheer moves like the one pictured here have really brought in the offers. Even our Freshmen cheerleaders have been heavily scouted by professional league teams, independent cheering clubs, and upperclass- men from around the nation.” 117 pKogeez ADVSNZUKS Youth Challenge is an adventure based coun- seling program which is taken by all eighth grade students. For protection and strength we have given you an education in the Manchester Tradition that includes a special version of courses, exams, papers, as well as Chewonki, athletics, proms and a class trip. This Tradition includes the closeness with teachers, friendships built over thirteen years, and an atmosphere of security. Like all great traditions, the strength comes from the repitition of experiences over years, decades, and generations. The common experience binds you to many that have gone before you. With pride and strength to fall back on it becomes your task to start your own tradition which may mean adding to the present tradition or even breaking with it. This means change which is hard to accept but inevitable. Hard because you are coming from such a strong tradition and inevitable because the world is changing very rapidly. Change is always difficult to digest because it incorrectly implies that what went before was incorrect. My hope is that not only will you realize that change is inevitable, but you will become part of those changes when they are necessary: that you will seize opportunities to control and direct it rather than allowing it to overwhelm you. Your responsibility in this regard doesn’t end with yourselves. There is no doubt in my mind that every student that has had the unique opportunity to participate in the Manchester Tradition should be a leader. The town has presented you with a gift by providing you with the academic background and especially the confidence to be leaders. Having been given the ability it becomes your duty to be the directors and controllers of change for the larger society. With Manchester Tradition as the launching pad, the count down begins on your search for a New Tradition. Fasten your seat belts because it will be an adventurous trek. jjwex Academic Awards 82 Math Teams . . . 96 Academic Decathlon Team . . . . 94 National Honor Society 9C Advertisements 123 Patrons 124 Art Club 94 Peer Education . 95 Athletic Awards S3 Play It Again Sam «| Baby Pictures 32 Principal’s Message 1391 Bands 89 Project Adventure 118 Basketball . .
