PUBLIC LIBRARY MANCHESTER, MASS, 01944 We, the members of the class of 1983, are dedicating our yearbook to a man who has become a very important part of Manchester High School. Though at times we may not have shown our feelings in the right way, we have always appreciated his concern for our well-being. From lunchroom duty to the basketball court he was more than just an administrator. In a short time he gained the respect of the faculty, the students and the community. Mr. Shrock, this dedication is our way to thank you for everything; not only your gui dance but also your love. We will always remember your stern words and your caring smile. There will always be a very special place in our hearts for you. Although the nicknames we have given you have changed from year to year, one true name will remain forever — Friend. The 1983 Anchor is dedicated to Mr. Gerald Schrock. 2 Old driends, Old 1. Jriendd , The more you look. Like so tacky Miss Ellie Bubba Bubba I ' m losing my head. Could it be just straight milk? The lady Hornets had a tough season this year finishing off with a 3-12-0 record. Pitching proved to be their major drawback. Three Hornets were chosen for the Cape Ann League All-Star Team: seniors, Karen Manos and Becca Marsden, and junior Ellen Field. Karen was also chosen as an All-League player. The team is hoping for a better season next year. 66 I 1982 Boys ' Tennis Front Row, L to R: Tim Allen, Darryl Miller, Jim Ina, Neil Sullivan. 2nd Row: Drew Wannamaker, Kevin Huber, Danny Ina, Ben Coues. 68 BOYS ' TENNIS The boys ' tennis team had an extremely successful season this year finishing with a perfect 11-0-0 record and capturing their second straight Cape Ann League crown. This team, under the direction of Cape Ann League Coach of the Year, Janet Burt, has now recorded twenty-six victories without a single loss. At the Cape Ann League Open, the number one doubles team of Jim Ina and Daryl Miller received top honors. In state tournament play, Manchester reached the final round losing to Austin Prep in a tough 3-2 loss. With seven re- turning starters, Manchester is looking for- ward to another outstanding season and the coveted state championship. 1982 Girls ' Tennis Front Row, L to R: Dinah Daley, Debby Kirby, Sarah Moore, Lynn Bottger, Paige Farrell. 2nd Row: Coach Strazulla, Nan Hatch, Melanie Meehan, Laura Bottger, Dina Brown, Jodi Nataloni. GIRL ' S TENNIS Third year coach Fran Strazulla led her girls ' team to a fine season finishing with an im- pressive 9-2-0 record. This placed them third in the Cape Ann League and qualified them for State Tournament play. At the states, the girls lost in the first round to a very strong Billerica team. With the loss of her three senior tri-captains: Lynn Bottger, Debbie Kirby and Sarah Moore, Coach Strazulla will be counting on some very talented underclassmen to carry the load. If all goes well, she can plan on another great season. 1982 J}r.-Sr. P, rom 1982 Sports Awards Softball Award 1982 Yearbook Dedication Tennis Team Award Coach ' s Award Baseball Award Our Championship Tennis Team Most Improved 72 1982 Academic Awards Actuaries Award Manchester Scholars: Erika, Harry and Marc Math League Medal Harvard Prize Book Herbert Hahn Award Spanish Medal Band Award ■ 1982 Graduation All My Sons Cast of All My Sons Joe Keller Kate Keller Chris Keller Ann Deever George Deever Dr. Bayliss Frank Lubey Lydia Lubey Sue Bayliss Steve McCoy Ruth Fusco Mike Ambrose Ffilary Justice Chris MacDonald David Brown Rob Gould Pernilla Dahm Karen Wood MHS Thespian Society L to R Sponsor, Mrs. Faust; Mike Ambrose, Vice Pres.; Wally Melvin, Rob Gould, Sec.; Kyle Bigger, Steve McCoy, Pres.; Hilary Justice, Treas.; Brendon Salter, Ellen Noonan, Jen Osborne, David Brown. Under the direction of second year coach Tom Meyers and Senior co-capt ains Peter Maio and Michael Ambrose, the boys ' team has improved steadily throughout the years. As these underclassmen reach their peak we can expect to see great things from them. Girls Cross Country Injuries plagued the girls cross country team this season as the 1 and 2 runners were out for many meets. Regardless, first year coach Pam Baucom helped develop the many underclassmen into a well-rounded team. Fine performances were put in by Lisa Hall (8), Jenny Nicol and Lisa Hall (10). In the years to come these girls will go very far. 93 Varsity Football Front Row M. Coen, B Platt, K Johnson, J. Henderson, W. Bower, Capt Mike Rooney, Capt. D. Twombly, Capt. C. Doucette, J. ' s Nickerson Field to witness the Manchester Hornets sink their archrivals, the Nantucket Whalers, in the Division V Super Bowl. The win was very dramatic. For two straight years the Whalers had spoiled Manchester ' s bid for a perfect season. But in 1982, history did not repeat itself. The undefeated Manchester team was strongly led by senior tri-captains Darren Twombly, Michael Rooney, and Charles Doucette. Head Coach Fran York, in his first season at MHS, called the 1982 Hornets A team with no weaknesses. Indeed this was evident as the high-powered, well- balanced Hornet offense scored 301 points while the Million Dollar defense allowed only 34 points in 11 games. Experienced offensive linemen opened gaping holes in the opponents ' lines and the immovable defense stifled the opposition. The Hornets boasted 6 Commonwealth Conference All-Stars: Darren Twombly, Stephen Geary, Charles Doucette, Kevin Johnson, Whitney Bower, and Michael Rooney. In addi- tion Johnson was voted MVP and Twombly was chosen as a member of the Boston Globe All-Scholastic Football Team. The success of this year ' s team is partly due to the maturity and talent of the seniors. They have the will to win, praised Coach York. No matter how many good players there are on a team, it takes the leadership of a great coaching staff to mold a super team. Line coach Bill Ryan and his assis- tant Greg Beatrice transformed a good line into the premier line in Division V. Coach Tom Beatrice took full advantage of the line with his running backs who gained substantial yardage. Kicking coach Dave Bilodeau and quarterback coach Peter Beatrice aided in the finer aspects of the game. Special contributions came from volunteer coach Jay Albert, security advisor Buster Jones, and scout Russ Fravel. Next season, despite losing most of the offensive and defensive lines, the Hornets will be contenders for a third straight Super Bowl victory behind the leadership of co-captains Carl Bachry and Wally Melvin. Many doubted the Hornet ' s could win the Super Bowl a second time. Next year could be another dream come true. God willing, you and I will come together for your Graduation. For the first time in fourteen years I will not be returning as Principal. So we are closing out our career at Manchester Jr. Sr. High School together and I will try to express on June 10, the special feelings we share. Most of us are filled with nostalgia and mixed emotions on Graduation eve and so it will be for the Class of ' 83. But you graduate also on the eve of 1984, that most ominous time described and prophesied by George Orwell. The years ahead will probably not be as grim and depressing as described by the novelist, but they surely will be challenging, threatening, frenetic, exciting. So your class, already noted for compassion and enthusiasm, will have to develop and demonstrate perseverance and resolve. What you have shown in the total life of our school — academic, athletic, extra-curricular — will have to be shown over and over again. There will be people to help you in the future as there have been special people here: teachers, coaches, advisors. Seek them out, learn from them, and then share what you have learned. I am especially happy to share my au revoir with the Class of ' 83, for you have shared so much with me. Keep It Green Richard C. Howland The year of 1983 has been a year of many changes for Manchester High School: new administrators, new teachers, new friends. After 14 years of service and dedication Mr. Richard Howland retired as principal of Man- chester Jr. Sr. High School. Mr. Howland has been in Manchester for as long as any of us can remember. He ' s seen us grow and change into the incredible school that we are now. His devotion to his faculty, his student-body and his town have been a major part of the school ' s ac- complishments. His caring smile and his words of wisdom will be missed in everything from football pep rallies to graduation. We ' d like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Howland for everything he has done for Man- chester; his love for the school will never be forgot- ten. We wish him the best of luck in the future.
