I am even more proud of my position as a member of the class. We all have new places to go and new challenges to meet. If the high school years are any indication of the future, we have little to worry about. What seemed like insurmountable walls have been overcome and are now behind us. Even when we were set back, we showed character by continuing on toward our goals. Our class has left an impression on the school and the community. It is time to expand as individuals and make our impressions on the world. I am optimistic about the future, know- ing that you are the type of people who will be part of it. I congratulate every one of you. This class is one of the best in terms of academics, athletics, and the arts to have graduated from this school. I wish you success and happiness in whatever you do in the future. Sincerely, Jonathan Simon IN MEMORIAM . . . In Memoriam to Carol Bates Reflections in the mirror of my past Concentrate on those who’ve gone away And bring back pains of love and pains of life That all the tears I’ve shed will never mend. As time goes on, the hurt begins to fade. We are able to accept what once seemed so unfair, And the memories bring joy, not tears. When those we love have gone away, We realize so much was left unsaid. We wish we had just one more chance To say how much we loved you . . . we cared. E. M. C. With eleven league wins (twelve including Pingree) and no losses during the regular season and a three and one record at the state tournament, the team has again proved it can outmove and outplay any competitor. With no loss of players for the ’82 season, Coach Janet Burt is looking forward to another chance at the state championship. Team picture: (1st, l-r) J. Ina, N. Sullivan, D. Miller. (2nd, l-r) A. In par with the Boys’ team, Coach Fran Strazzula’s Girls ' Ten- nis Team had an outstanding performance in 1981. Beating Pingree and coming up with a ten and one record brought the girls to the state finals, where unfortunately they lost their se- cond match in the second round. With a whole crop of new talent coming up and with many veterans returning, the team is eager to get their rightful claim, the State Championship. 63 1981 VARSITY SOFTBALL (1st row, left to right) S. VARSITY SOFTBALL Just as tor the Field Hockey team, 1981 was a building year for the Varsity Softball team. With but five Varsity players returning, Coach Coons experimented with the team, switching players from position to position. Though ending the season with a 3-9 record, Manchester had three all-star players: Karen Manos, Rebecca Marsden, and Ellen Field. 65 Jk K ' 1981 JV SOFTBALL (first row, left to right) D. Pszenny, B. Morrow, Coach Strout. m Ik. JV Softball Leonette Strout’s Junior Varsity team had a mediocre season (6-11) in the face of strong competition in 1981. With a team made up of nine freshmen, Manchester had a big disadvantage in playing the older, more experienced teams. For the 1982 season, Ms. Strout hopes for better results, since the majority of the returning players will be sophomores, and a new batch of freshmen will also be swelling the team’s ranks. 67 1981 VARSITY BASEBALL (first row, left to right) J. Laughridge, R. Fritz, Coach Ananian. 1 VARSITY BASEBALL Losing too many close games, the Boys’ Varsity Baseball team went 8-10 for the 1981 season. This is a record that returning captains Eddie Field and Eric Bachry plan to improve in 1982. Losing only two starting players, and gaining some talented underclassmen, Coach Dick Ananian expects a stronger team to vie for the Mayflower pennant. 69 JV BASEBALL (first row, left to right) S. Rosnick, A. Cummings, B. Foley, M Fusco, T, Aldrich, D, Bates. (2nd row, left to right) K. Bachry, T. Pallazolla, J. Aiello, W. Melvin, J. Gilson, M. Rooney, J. Pallazolla, T. Crane, Coach Maijenski. ■ 70 For Manchester, the Junior Varsity team often bears the brunt of the losses: the outstanding players are usually promoted to Varsity due to the lack of senior players. The predominantly freshman and sophomore JV team has to face stronger juniors and sophomores from other schools. Coach Maijenski notes that this year’s Varsity will no longer have to draft JV players, and thus the ’82 season should be a great improvement on the 1981’s 1-12 record. Jr. High Baseball With an even record of 7-8 in the face of stiff competition, Coach Burgess’ Junior High team showed that it had the talent and the drive (though sometimes not the luck) to play a good ball game. Every game was close, but while Manchester was at times outplayed, Coach Burgess agrees that it was never outclassed. While losing players to the sub-varsity team, Junior High baseball can look forward to another good season next year. 71 THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR CLASSES of MANCHESTER JR.-SR. Abendroth 90 Boys’ Cross Country The boys’ cross country team, accumulating a record of 4-7, under the coaching of Tom Meyers, did significantly better this year than it did in 1980. Under co-captains Mike Ambrose and Tyler Laughridge, the predominantly ninth and tenth grade team was primarily concerned with gearing up for and getting experienced for next year’s season. The fall awards assembly left Mike Ambrose with the MVP trophy, Tyler Laughridge with Coach’s Award, and Steven Anderson with Most Improved. Girls’ Cross Country Like the boys’ team, the girls’ cross country team had what was essentially a building year. Coach Bill Burgess led the girls to an outstanding sixth place finish and a fairly decent record. Out of an eight member team, the girls selected eight octa-captains, of whom four will be returning next year to better their previous record. Award winners were Debbie Creed with the Coach’s Award, Sarah Marsden with MVP, and Jennifer Smalley with Most Improved. 91 GOLF C. Machain, L. Canale, K. Brauneis, S. Rosnick, D. O ' Brien, M. Curran, W, Melvin, 96 0 m -z 97 98 VARSITY FOOTBALL Cheered on madly by two thousand screaming fans, Manchester football players stormed over Dorchester 49- 6. The Superbowl was a very dramatic and exciting affair, with Manchester fans swarming the field at game’s end, but the regular season was no less suspenseful. Led by tri-captains Eric Bachry (Mayflower League All-star) , Eddie Field (All-star) , and Todd Piergrossi (a ranked scorer, even after playing but the first half of two games) , Manchester went 9- 1 , losing only to last year’s state champs, Nantucket. In addition to having a brutal line, offense and defense, an awesome defensive field and a brilliant team of running backs and quarterbacks, Manchester boasted four more Mayflower League All- stars: Shawn Dwyer, Phil MacDougall, Rob Ocko and Mike Rooney. In addition to them was Darren Twombly, Eddie Field and Eric Bachry as Boston Globe Division V all-stars. Even though they had an extremely talented team to start with, it took the coaches long hours of work to hone Manchester Football down to the powerhouse it became. This was a golden year for Coach Chuck Cooke, the logical extension of his previous two years of winning records. Under Coach Skip Perry, and his assistant Robert Fitzgerald, the line became stunningly effective. The line hit harder and blocked better than any opposition, stopping offenses or opening holes for the backs. Coach Jerry Schrock, meanwhile, took full advantage of the line, and his backfield unit made more interceptions and stopped more downs than that of any other team. Coaches Ananian and Maijenski also gave invaluable help scouting and developing strategies. It will be a hard thing for the football team to live up to its name next year, but from the looks of things, there seems to be a fairly good chance that next year Manchester will face another unfortunate opponent at the Superbowl. The college ac- ceptances and rejections will have come and gone, many job plans finalized, and both realistic planning and fantasizingabout the future wiilfbe continuing. IjJowever, the individual and iollective high school records of the Class of ’82 have just about been completed and many of you are justifiably proud and some , of you understand- ably are sighing, “If I had only ” M Among the adjectives that seem to fit your class are: industrious and close-knit. Faculty in ;ular are sensitive to “senioritis” and, though they may lack unanimity on this, some acknowledge you’ve given serious attention to your academic responsibilities longer in your senior year than many of your predecessors. There is certainly general agreement that the Class of ’82 is close-knit and the evidence in athletic, extra-curricular, and class activities has been significant. The human family is in great need of hard work and togetherness. My wish for you all is that you carry these traits with you beyond M.H.S. to a world waiting desperately for them. Keep It Green 1 -v: U- X Richard C. Howland, Principal Superintendent Ball Retires But Leaves a Strong Tradition Our Superintendent of Schools, Foster Ball, retired the last day of 1981 after a quarter of a century of ser- vice to our schools, eighteen years as superintendent. As Foster Ball joins Joe Flyland in retirement and in a few months as Frank Langley joins them, we mark the end of an era. Foster’s superintendency has reflected his stability, patience, modesty and strength. We shall miss the light burning in his office late at night and his quiet, constant involvement in the ac- tivities of our school — from a Flornets football game to graduation. Meantime, one last “hurrah for Foster. v Q. - v s V‘OjQli- ' ' V Richard C. Howland, Principal 144 PUBLIC LIBRARY MANCHESTER, MASS. 01944 MANCHESTER PUBLIC LIBRARY 3 2124 00063 4626 3W y, . .£ ‘Jn5 S
