Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1981 volume:

7 74 - , fyt The Manchester Anchor 1981 Manchester-by-the-Sea We have chosen to dedicate this yearbook to a man who has touched the lives of many of us at Manchester High in a very special way. He has only been teaching in Manchester for four years, but that has been long enough for us to come to know him and respect him very much. His colleagues know him as kind, congenial, and gifted with an enormous amount of intelligence and quick wit. He is highly respected for his creativity and his diligence. His students know him as an exceptional teacher. He has always strived to know his students on a personal as well as an academic level. Open-minded and compassionate, he is responsive to our individual problems and tal- ents; he encourages the enjoyment of work and pride in work well done. To many students and faculty members he has become a very close friend on whom we can depend for a bit of advice, a good laugh, a reassuring word, or a warm smile. In this past year, in addition to his classes and the amount of hard work and time he has put into this year’s drama productions, he has shouldered the responsibility of chairman of the English Department in Mr. Averill’s absence. The time he has given, the dedication he has shown, and the extent of involvement he has taken on has won him the admiration of all. For these reasons given, and for many more, we the Editors wish to dedicate the 1981 Anchor to our teacher, friend, and favorite Miss Piggy Fan, Mr. John Stuart. 2 Table of Contents Dedication 2 Seniors 17 Faculty 41 Underclassmen 50 Spring Events 59 Clubs 71 Sports 81 Events 113 Ads 120 Principal’s Address 143 % M i ’ So what else exciting” is new?? For the Manchester Hornets Football team, the 1980 season was exciting and spirited. Second-year coach Chuck Cooke led his team to an outstanding 9-1-0 season, the one loss going to Nantucket in the final minutes of play. The four Senior Captains, Fitz Lufkin, Bret Pasek, Michael Chapman, and Peter Doucette, spurred the Hor- nets on with their determination and enthusiasm. They and the other graduating members of the team will be greatly missed, but there is a large group of Freshmen, Sopho- more, and Junior players eager to follow in their footsteps. Good luck to them and to Coach Cooke and his fine coach- ing staff! 83 VARSITY FOOTBALL C HEERLEADERS (Front row, l-r) D. Agnello, L. Magoon, C. Pszenny, E. Griggs, P. Brown. (Back row, l-r) D. While other teams were made up of strong, experienced runners, many of Manchester’s good runners had graduated in 1980. The Girls’ Cross-country team fared better, coming up with a winning record against very strong opposition. As both teams gain experience, over the next few years we are sure to see Manchester Cross-country as a dominant pres- ence in the Cape Ann League. 87 GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY 89 VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY (Front row, l-r) A Shaw, B Bresnahan, A Neal, A. Finishing with a 3-9-0 record, the team was very enthusiastic and showed a great deal of improvement as the season went on. DISTINCTIVE SPORT COLLECTIONS 19 BEACH STREET, MANCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS 01944 (617)526-7233 1 ■ ; jpBB Hr m f IK | TO THE CLASS OF 1981 On the eve of last year’s graduation, we spoke of how national and inter- national events imposed their own ominous and uncertain mood. Almost on the eve of Graduation ’81, we are grateful our hostages are home, but there are other crises in El Salvador, Poland, and the Persian Gulf. We have a new President, new priorities, and a new national urgency to do something about them. In Massachusetts Proposition 2Vz is law. School committees, teachers, administrators and others are trying to maintain the highest possible quality education that compliance will allow. All of these “outside ’ factors will af- fect your future more than you know. Yet how you respond to challenges and pressures in your present day-to-day life, especially in school, will determine to a great degree how you adjust, cope, survive, or flourish in the future. Your senior year has been a real “turn-around” for many of you. Previous apathy and lack of achievement has been replaced with spirit and ac- complishment in areas like debate, athletics, community service, music, and class events. I know you understand that you have done these things with help from many others, especially parents and teachers. I know, too, you join me in thanking a few of your advisors who represent many more teachers and coaches: your class advisors, Mrs. Quinion and Mr. Ryan, and special friend, Coach Field; your yearbook advisor, Mrs. Peterson; and Student Council advisor, Mr. Costello. Someday, all too soon perhaps, it will be your turn to help the generation that comes after you. And you will remember a teacher, advisor, coach and you will gladly do your part to KEEP IT GREEN. Sincerely, Richard C. Howland, Principal 143 WE’RE ONLY JUST BEGUN We’ve only just begun to live. White lace and promises; A kiss for luck and we’re on our way. We’ve only begun. And when the evening comes we smile, So much of life ahead; We’ll find a place where theres room to grow, And, yes we’ve just begun.
