In Memory and Dedication It is with a sense of very deep loss that we, the class of 1978, dedicate our yearbook in memoriam to Robert Horvath. He was, first, a completely devoted, family man who treasured the love and companionship of his wife Jan and son Todd. He earned, also, in no small measure, the respect and friendship of the students he worked with, and for. here at Manchester Jr. -Sr. High School. The young men he led on the baseball field and basketball court were fortunate to have ben- efited from the sensitive and compassionate leadership of a man who exhibited a graceful and mature posture whether winning or losing. His presence among us has been and will be sorely missed, but we, the Class of 1978 will forever cherish his memory, and we hope to adhere to the principles he strove mightily to impart. They have lived through our chicken dinners, songfests, calendars, beach towels, bake sales, and auction. We couldn ' t have done it without them. For this, we want to thank our lucky stars! LEO FRASER This year ' s Anchor is a conglomeration of nail-biting and fear of missing deadlines, but mainly a lot of care and dedication. The source of all of this was the 1978 staff who appeared to have endless amounts of these emotions. This was demonstrated by the size of the staff itself, and the amount of members who showed up for meetings, when really needed. The staff would like to thank Mr. Fraser for all the time and support he gave throughout the formation of the yearbook. We would never have made it without him. 31 M.H.5. Band 1st row, l to r: J. Also new to M.H.S. was the first school marching band which played at several of the home football games. Although the loss of older members will be felt, the new and younger players will support the new revival of spirit and participation. 32 Row I: R. Lampkins. M. Rooney, L. Kadra, S. Hatch, B. CAMERA SHY Desmond Battles Robert Louge Benjamin Magoun John Radack David Seale Paul Borehersen TO THE CLASS OF 1978 Six years ago you entered Manchester Jr. -Sr. High School and the reputation that preceded you from grade school was mixed. Some of you and some of your teach- ers were hesitant about predicting growth and success. When you were in junior high we gave special attention to your academic and counseling programs. But that was a long (short?) time ago. Your record in the National Merit Scholarship Competition and in admission to college, your leadership in sports and extracurricular activities, and especially your growing spirit as evidenced in the Christmas Songfest and other events, are proof of what we have accomplished together. Perhaps other classes have achieved higher individual goals, but none has come such a long way. And progress is what education and people are all about. Thank you and . . . KEEP IT GREEN Richard C. Baseball ' 77 There is just cause for optimism among the staff and players for 1978. This year’s baseball team was young, and inexperienced but managed to acquit themselves admirably in all but a few ballgames. Skip Milne makes his varsity baseball coaching debut, and we are sure he will approach it with his usual verve. The loss of Bob Horvath through tragic circumstances was a blow which will take some determination to recover from, but recover the team will, and carry on the proud tradition of Manchester baseball. A Christmas festi- val at Cape Cod and a double win over Hamil- ton-Wenham for the first time in 10 years. Although we bid farewell to our faithful seniors, Lisa, Cathy, and Patti, we look forward to an even more productive season in the year to come. The remaining players will all be well experienced and ready to face the oncoming challenges. It’s spirit that counts and we have plenty of it! 76 J.V. Boys 7 Basketball LHti, Standing: C. Fritz, J. This years team was one of the finest JV teams in the past 10-15 years. Through hustle and aggressiveness they compiled a 14-3 record for the season. The strength of this talented team was their unselfishness toward each other. Any given game two or three players would be the leading scorers. The highlight of the season was a come from behind overtime victory over Hamil- ton-Wenham while playing without two of our starters. Look for a bright future from these men that will be full of excitement and victory. J.V. Girls ' Basketball Front row, left to right: L. Stanley, M. Noonan, K. O’Brien, M. Smith, N. Lations, M. Over 80 % of the large squad were eighth graders, while their opposition did not include any girl below ninth grade. This year was viewed as a “learning-the-bas- ics” and “gaining-experience” year, with every girl playing in every game. Hopefully, the enthusiasm, loyalty, and dedication of the group will last.
