% wester-by-t MANCHESTER PUBLIC LIBRARY UNION STREET MANCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS 01944 fcW’v p , « r ■ v Open arms might find peace in their place. . . V • ' • ' « Dedication to Mr. Joseph M. Hyland A true and unpretentious dedication must be given to a person who is dedicated not only to his work , but more especially to the one who represents the real spirit of his work . We students at Manchester Jr. -Sr. High School have been fortunate enough to know a man who exemplifies the word dedication in all he does. Without exception , his contributions to our schools and the community have always been made with the best interests of the people in mind . His support of the athletic and academic programs has been unfailing over an awesome period of forty years. This man has devoted his years as a coach and athletic director for the betterment of school sports and student character. He possesses an understanding of every sport at MHS , and he treats all sports endeavors with equal enthusiasm and interest. He has always emphasized a sportsmanlike attitude first and winning second . He believes that students should have pride in their school and a respect for common courtesy, always stressing the importance of being people first and athletes second . How can we thank a man who has given us so much and asks for so little in return? The Class of ' 77 says thank you, and takes pride in dedicating the 1977 edition of The Anchor to Mr. Joseph M. Hyland, a man who has been a friend to us all, and one whom we will always remember fondly . We will be the last graduating class to benefit from his understanding manner, his joy in victory, his pride in defeat. No words can fully express the emotions we feel as we say good-bye, but we hope Uncle Joe understands with these words he has so often spoken to us, May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back May the sun shine warm upon your face . . . and may God hold you in the palm of His hand. With our love and best wishes , THE CLASS OF ' 77 8 Time and truth are ends we’ll never see or tie To keep our dream alive we live with it Not enough words can be used to do justice in thanking our advisors. Mr. Averill and Mrs. Kostopoulos got more than they bargained for, but they stood by us, giving inva- luable time and energy. Thanks must also go to Mr. Prouty, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Coleman for their help. We thank you all and hope you can now find some peace of mind. HOME OF Hornets Time will stall the man whose dream seems to be forever. 13 J v... ; ■ , , . Jf W • W WHW CLUBS 15 ACTIVITIES Ryai U ) i The Class of 1977 wanted to make this a special yearbook, a meaningful close to four years of desperation and jubilation. The staff has chosen the theme of The Anchor to be New Horizons , ’ ’ with the growing represented by the young seed and the full-grown tree. We spent much time on the lay-out and construction of the yearbook , hoping to emulate the feelings of hope and determination which the Class of 1977 will take with them as they leave. We hope you enjoy your reading . . . 16 l c BOTTOM (1 to r): S. Biechler, V. Bachry, J. Allen, G. Spurrell, J. Marsden, J. Willwerth, J. O ' Brien, A. Lee. TOP: Director Steve Ryan, A. Cutter, J. Man- chester found tennis in the school only three years ago. Three years later, the girls found themselves in the State Finals. Unheard of? No, not when there ' s a coach like Dale Temple, who never underestimated anyone ' s ability. And not with the squad of girls that worked hard all spring. Cheryl Preston was at 1st singles - undefeated in the league; Joanne Snow, 8-2 at 2nd; Sue Brown, 3rd singles and 9-1 for the season. Gael Donelan and Patti Atwater played 1st doubles, 10-0 in CAL action; and Debbie Bullock and Beth Masiero went undefeated at 2nd doubles, giving the team a lot of strength at doubles. Liz Weld, Liz Fusco and Anasta- sia Brown, as alternates, received invaluable expe- rience for next year. For the third year in a row, the girls again over- powered the league, grabbing another Cape Ann League title . In three seasons , the team has only lost an incredible one match, leaving them with a total record of 28 wins, 1 loss. Joanne Snow was the only member lost to graduation last spring , so the team is looking forward to another great year, and the title of 1 in the State ! Manchester ' s Boys’ Tennis team is following close behind the girls ' team. After only two years in the league, the boys have to their credit one East divi- sion title and one CAL championship. In 1976, the team, led by Coach Hardy Nalley, swept through their toughest schedule and finished with a season record of 11 wins and only 3 losses. The team was headed by Bill Ina and Barry Pasek, who both alternated playing first singles for the Hor- nets, sharing also the duties for second singles. Andy Textoris played a steady third singles , pointed out by Mr. Nalley as the most consistent player. Jeff Bishop and Damon Coons were the unbeatable duo at first doubles, enjoying a successful undefeated year. Playing strong matches, Gabe Bernson and Chris Davis often won critical matches for Coach Nalley at the important second doubles position . The Boys ' squad hopes to catch up with the girls this season, going for their second consecutive CAL crown. The Hornets should be right in the running, since their squad comes back intact without the loss of any seniors. 75 V a r s i t y s o f t b a BOTTOM (1-r): F. Watt, N. Gillis, H. Watt, P. Walsh. Following a 1975 Cape Ann League Championship season, the D conclusion of the 1976 season saw the Hornets with a 7-11 record. A young and inconsistent pitching staff and a large group of under- classmen, however, did gain valuable playing experience and Q managed to pull off a major upset when they defeated a contending western division Amesbury team. q The 1977 Manchester Baseball squad will miss graduates Tom Atwater, Chris Cool, Bob Gibson, and Tom Howarth, but all other lettermen will be returning. Led by sole senior Brad Pasek and a 0 host of juniors and sophomores, Manchester hopes to improve its record . b a JUNIOR VARSITY NEWS The 1976 junior varsity baseball team worked long hours and was . rewarded with a winning season. The Hornets were hoping to close out their best season ever with a big win over rivals Georgetown. The seniors had a special reason - this would be their last game in the football uniform for Manchester. Spirits rose high as the cheerleaders yelled, and as Mr. Yavner delivered his annual toast to the gradu- ating seniors. Tri-Captains Jeff Bishop, Jeff Manos, and Gabe Bernson recapped a fantastic season. Coach Yavner proceeded to announce the elected captains for the 1977 Hornet squad: Chris Davis, Bill Ina, and Josh Collens. It is unusual that this is a first in the history of our school, in this my last year. All the coaches should be congratulated for a great job. The players were fantastic, coming through with the big play when the chips were down. The pressures were great but so was the execution of play. Championships bring excitement, joy and togetherness. There is nothing greater than being number one. All of us must remember the banners fade and the trophies tarnish; but if we have learned the lessons of championship play, we will always be on top. The world of sports is based on sacrifice and hard work - of learning to cooperate and play together. Our Hornet teams have had a great fall, tasting victory after victory. It is my hope that the winning will continue throughout the year. Always remember that yesterday’s home run will not win today ' s ballbame. Y ours in good sports , KNEELING (1 to r): M. Rodier, R.
