AAJf O Club Celebrates Ulack History Week February 11-18 was national Black History Week. In keeping with the theme Phases of Black Life, the week was celebrated on Manchester campus with a full schedule of black educators, artists, films and other spe- cial events. The programs were open to the public as well as to MC students. The week began with a program by the Corine Morse Williams Dance Group and an informal discussion at AAFRO House with Myron Chenault of Bowling Green University. Later in the week, Halisi Shauri of Northwest- ern University of Chicago spoke at AAFRO House. The movies LADY SINGS THE BLUES and THE AUTO- BIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITT- MAN were shown, and North Man- chester residents were treated to a poetry reading by poet Ethridge Knight. Saturday was Las Vegas Night, and the week came to a close on Sun- day with a Sunday Celebration and evening program sponsored by black students. Zhere ' s More to Ceaming Zhan 00 ks . . . The Values, Ideas and Arts program (VIA) promotes co-curricular enrich- ment and encom passes weekly convo- cations, the artist-lecture series and the film classics series. Convocations this year ranged from an African dance group to discussions on nuclear energy. Tliere was also Rob- ert and Dorothy Keller ' s faculty series convo, and senior series convocations by Ruth Davis, Prentiss Lea, Chip Mc- Ferran and Jeff Wliite. Tlie artist-lecture series offered special evening performances open to the community. Audiences enjoyed Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm, classical guitarist Carlos Montoya, the National Theatre of the Deaf, pianist Peter Nero, and the Vienna Boys Choir. The film classics series presented such films as NINOTCHKA, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITTMAN, Orson Welles ' CITI- ZEN KANE, and others. Top left: Shirley Chisolm. Top right: Carlos Montoya.
