“perience Pays Off!! The 1986-87 boys’ basketball season was the best in Manassas Park’s history. Coach Chip Miller led his team to their third consecutive Bull Run District championship, their first ever Region B championship, and a berth in the State tournament. The team was led by seven seniors, most of whom have been together since middle school (1982-83) when they had a record of 20-0. The 1987 team had a record of 18-1 in the district, their only loss being the season opener to Rappahan¬ nock; their overall record was 22-4. Manassas Park was rated 2 in the final Group A State poll. In 1987, John Lee became the second player in the school’s history to score 1000+ career points (Eugene Baltimore was the first in 1986). The Cougars had a great ending to the 1987 season. After winning the District title, the Cougars defeated Clarke County (62-42), Rappahannock (87-69), and Central-Woodstock (55-54) to win the District Tournament and received a bye in the regional Tournament. In Regionals, the Cougars defeated William Monroe (66-58) and won the Regional crown after defeating Prince Edward (90-78). Going into the State Tournament, the Cougars were the top-rated team, but the season ended as the team lost to the 3 team in the state, Suffolk (90-76). The 1986-87 team accomplished a great feat this season, and it will be memorable in years to come. Top Lft: We did it, like we said. The Regional crown was ours! Middle Lft: J.T. First Time at States! m j . - Manassas Park’s Varsity Football team enjoyed their best season ever this year. The Cougars ended the regular season with a record of 8-4; but for Manassas Park football fans, the season was far from over. Although our school had one of the smallest football squads in the state this year (only 20 players), they took it all the way to the state championship game. The first post-season game was played at Cougar Stadium against the Brentsville Tigers. With 50 seconds left in the game, Manassas Park was trailing 9-6. Things didn’t look good until David Ragan recovered a Brentsville fumble and returned it 85 yards for a Cougar touchdown. The game’s final score was 12-9, Manassas Park. This game gave our team the Regional title. With the victory over Brentsville, the Cougars advanced to the State Semi-final game. This time the opponent was Matthews High School. This game was another close contest; it went into double overtime. Once again, the Cougars came out on top. Jimmy Cooper took the ball on a botched field goal attempt and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Carl Gentry to secure a Cougar victory. The last game of the season was next — the Group A Division II state championship game. This time the Cougars faced Parry McCluer High School. Although Manassas Park played a hard-hitting game, they couldn’t pull it out against their opponent’s 35 member team. Varsity Football — 89
