THE WASHINGTON TRIP On March 31, seventy-six members of the Senior Class and four faculty members left Manasquan High School for three glorious days in Washington. IJ. CI. ,.,. Upon our arrival in the Capital city, we were astonished to see the Jap- anese cherry trees in bloom, as everyone had told us that our early visit would make this sight impossible. Our first visit was to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. We were greatly impressed by the efficiency and smoothness with which the work was done. Our next stop was at the Pan American Building. The beauty of the tropical patio and the impressiveness of the council room for the Pan-American Union will remain very vividly in our minds for some time to come. The visit at night to the Congressional Library will be remembered for many years on account of the unusual contents of the library, including sketches. paintings, old books and manuscripts. Thence we went to the Lin-- coln Memorial, a perfect tribute to that great president of our country. The immense figure of Lincoln, carved in white marble, stood out prominently under the system of indirect lighting. The next day we visited the Franciscan Monastery, and the National Cathedral where President Wilson and Admiral Dewey are buried. The spiritual beauty of these two buildings and the lovely garden at the Monastery held us spellbound. . . Following this. we spent a delightful half-hour in the Zoological Gardens. Soon after, we left for a visit to the Corcoran Art Gallery which contained many interesting exhibits. The afternoon found us in Mount Vernon, a place that well deserves the wonderful things written about it. Its grand simplicity brings a quiet. restful feeling into the hearts of visitors. Next we went to the Arlington National Cemetery where the Amphitheatre and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier greatly impressed us. We started our last day in Washington with a visit to the Washington Monument. The sights from the top of this unique structure- were lovely. with the Lincoln Memorial and the famous cherry trees seeming even more beautiful than ever before The Aircraft Building. the Old and the New Museums with the Smith- sonian Institute. which were next on our schedule, proved to be places in which vve could gladly have spent nionths. The White House was last but by far not least on our itinerary. The building lived up to our greatest expectations and we were more than delighted with the rooms which we were especially permitted to see. On the way home We stopped at Annapolis to see the Navy's first dress parade of the Spring. It was a sight that none of us would have missed. The trip was a success in every way. We shall never forget the things seen and we appreciate having had the privilege of visiting our capital city as a class. MARJORIE DANN P.-XG E TH IRTY-TNVO
