Mrs. Princess Towe Dedication w INISTRATIC D FACULTY The Principal Speaks on Minority Progress Spurred by Movements in the 50's 60's and 70's It is good to reflect on the 1950's and 1960's and the 1970's to analyze the progress that oppressed minorities have made in this country over the span of the last few years. In the 1950's, the need for the battle against racial injustice was apparent. During this time, the fight against racial injustice took the form of overt protests. This could be classified as the beginning of the era of the sit-ins, the boycotts, the marches, etc. Such leaders emerged as Dr. Martin L. King, Malcolm X, et al., all of whom played a significant role in bringing attention to the injustices under which Blacks and other minorities were forced to live. The injustices at that time were apparent. Blacks, for example, had to sit in the rear of the bus; they were not able to attend many universities, colleges and other schools because of the color of their skin. These apparent injustices existed more in the South than they did in the North and so the biggest war was waged in the South. By the early 1960's, the fight began to travel throughout the country; through various forms of protest, every state in the Union felt some of the dissatisfaction expressed by the oppressed minorities. In the late 1960's, these protests took on a more violent form when rioting began to take place in a number of major VI T. American cities. Because of the unrest of the 50'$ and 60's, new laws were written and programs were established to help minorities overcome the apparent injustices. Consequently, a change of attitude developed in the minds of those who held positions of power and minorities began to make significant progress toward racial justice and equality. As a result of the 1950's and 1960's, we have seen minorities take an even more responsible position than ever before. In the early 1970's, it was apparent that the fight against racial injustices were effective and as a result, many leaders of the 1950 and 1960 era took a backseat to the point that they rarely ever speak out to the extent they used to. Nonetheless, it should be apparent to all oppressed minorities that the racial injustices of the past are still here. Understanding of these injustices now requires more of a level of sophistication because they are more subtle in nature than ever before. Let us not forget that the oppressed minorities still seek answers to such questions as (a) Why are their schools inferior to other schools? (b) Why are so many oppressed minorities out of work? (c) Why is there a disproportionate number of oppressed minorities in correctional institutions? (d) Why do oppressed minorities still have difficulty getting good housing? These questions and many like them still plague the oppressed minorities and we as a people will not have gotten our just dues until all these problems of injustices are rectified.
