Yet we too often forgot that Sol Gleicher was not only that man we knew daily at school, but he was a decorated war hero who led his infantry Nisei company through the worst of the Second World War. He spent 1 Vi years in a prisoner of war camp. Sol Gleicher was a man who never stopped fighting lor what he believed. As an educator he was controversial, yet he did not espouse difficult causes for the sake of controversy. His devotion to the preservation of the democratic system was manifested in his commitment to the youth of our city without thought of personal sacrifice. He inspired all whom he taught to live by the ideals which governed his own life. He was a man we were proud to know, for each of us, teacher and student alike, learned from Sol Gleicher. It was one of the biggest and most experienced teams Coach Del Guercio has had in his twenty-five years of coaching, but owing to a series of major injuries that included Virgil Smith, Wade Seay, Walter Jenkins and John Gibbons we just could not get it together. These two young coaches taught both Varsity and J. V. how to live and play together and how to give 110% for the team. This was the story of the season, with this attitude exemplified by coach and team, winning big victories was in the making. We knocked oft top rate teams such as Clifford J. Scott, East Side [Newark], Barringer, West Side and Vailsburg with ease. We went down to the wire with Central, Weequahic and East Orange. Six good ballplayers will be leaving, and we honor them; Capts. Sam Johnson and Willie Marsh, Barry Armstrong, Morris Walker, Nate Simmons and Maurice Stewart. They will be hard to replace, but no doubt about it, our J. V. 's will come through.
