Cross SCIENCE Another basic goal of any educational system Is to develop in the student a keener insight to and awareness of the whys and wherefores of his physical surroundings and environment. The sci- ence department at Maine West concerns itself primarily with this integral aspect of the student ' s education. The courses available, whether they deal with general science or advanced chemistry, all are geared toward expanding the student ' s understanding of the scientific theories and laws which govern nature. Bovenmyer GIRLS PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical education of high school students is of such concern to the leaders and citizens of our community that they have made it a state law that all students have at least thirty minutes of physical education every day of school. One of the front-rank goals of our late President was increased physical fitness. In a sincere effort to fulfill this aim and other responsibilities, Maine West attempts to provide teachers of the finest caliber and athletic facilities of the highest stand- ard. K. Pierce J. Suffield r SOCIAL SCIENCE One of the leading practical assets a student can develop as a result of his schooling is the capacity to be- come a responsible, well-informed citizen. As the Often alluded to lead- ers of the future, students must have an understanding of the history, sig- nificance, and basis of the democratic society of which they are an impor- tant part if they are to become fully mature, intelligent, and working members of it in their adult years. The social science courses are de- signed to accomplish this essential task at Maine West. 21
