LANGUAGE We often, especially in the study of litera- ture, encounter the phrase, It loses some- thing in the translation. At Maine West, students, through their study of a language, are able to gain the satisfaction of reading, in the original, the writings of some of his- tory ' s greatest figures. Latin students, for example, have the opportunity to read the famous works of Vergil and the great orator Cicero. The study of a language also con- tributes greatly to the student ' s understand- ing and appreciation of the background and finer points of his own language. I L. Karger R. Meute D. Smith R. Marshall MATHEMATICS If a number of individuals were asked to boil down the general aim of the entire educa- tional system, the general consensus of opinion would probably be that its goal is to develop the student ' s mind to its maximum potential and to develop sense of clear thinking and logica deduction. Such is the specific and principal ob- jective of the math department. The courses of- fered, which range from basic math to calculus, not only teach how to solve math problems but also how to attack any problem or difficult situa- tion the student may encounter with an orderly sense of reasoning and direction.
