English English teaches the communication skills of speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Speaking is taught through oral reports, participation in panels, and class discussions. Through records and tape recordings students have the opportunity to hear a piece of literature read by the author himself, equally important is the experience gained from listening and viewing radio, television and literary produc- tions. Writing is taught by studying and writing themes and essays and then discussing them during a laboratory- conference period. Through extensive and critical study of short stories, novels, plays, and speeches, the student is taught how to appreciate and enjoy good literature. Students learn about the growth and care of children, cloth- ing, housing, and feeding the family, management of time, energy, and money, and everyday relation- ships with people. It is the goal of the Home Eco- nomics Department to help individuals achieve satisfaction and beauty in their own lives, gain confidence in themselves, and build strong homes and communities.
