However, the Demons' fighting backfield and mighty line added up to one of the finest teams Maine has ever had on her gridiron. The highlight of the season was the final game in which Maine roared over Riverside- Brookfield by a score of 77el3. lt was in this game that halfback Bruce Gallup, by scoring 96 points for the season, broke George Fishers former record of SU. When the all- conference team was named, Maine took top honors with six players. l-lonors were also bestowed upon the Demons as tackle Wayne Moeller and halfback Bruce Gallup made the Daily News All-State team. Gallup was also named the most valuable player, while Clem Ryan received the honorary captain award. The Frosh-Soph team, under Coaches Gates and Kirby, tied for second place in the conference by winning five and dropping two of their games. All in all, it was a great seasong a season in which physical prowess stood Coaches Hughes Schroeder Olson side by side with good sportsmanship. It was one of the strongest varsity basket- ball squads Maine has seen in several years which battled its way to a third place tie in the West Suburban Conference. Sparked by Lee Matsch and Marv Nyren, the quintet hit for a conference record of seven won, seven lost. Al- though losing five of their first six games, the Demons went on to score a final mark of seven wins and eleven losses. As the season went into its final stages, Maine became one of four teams tied for the number three spot in the con- ference, but finally broke ahead of the others by winning several decisive games. However, the Demons lost their last conference game of the season to Riverside by a score of Sl-53 to tie with that team for third place, Maine then entered the Arlington Heights Regional Tourna- ment and easily defeated Greyslake 69-46 in the preliminaries. The cagers went on to trounce Libertyville 77-61 in the semi-finals. Once in the finals, however, disaster struck the quintet as Barrington downed them 77-60. At the close of the season, the Demons held many honors. Matsch's 275 points and Dick Steiner's 233 were good enough to take fourth and fifth in conference scoring. When the all- conference team was named, Matsch and Steiner placed, with Marv Nyren taking an honorable mention. At the winter sports ban- quet, lvlatsch was awarded the honor of most valuable player, while Nyren was named hon- orary captain. The Frosh-Soph, under the excellent han- dling of Coach Olson, produced a season rec- ord of nine wins and nine losses. ln conference play they hit for eight and dropped six. I I L PORT The intramural sports program was again car- ried on extensively at Maine for the sixth consecutive year. Under the supervision of Coach O, K. Wilson, intramurals are designed to give the boy who is not good enough to make a varsity squad a chance to compete in sports and even win a letter, Letters are awarded to boys placing in an individual event or playing on a Winning team. This year the pro- gram consisted of eight sports. Fall sports included cross country, football, and golf, while basketball, swimming, and track were on the Winter schedule. The spring sports, volleyball and softball, rounded out the year's competition. Mr. Wilson, as director of the program, can truly be proud of his excellent record. Weightlifting, although not an intramural sport, was extremely successful this year, largely due to the efforts of Mr. Ioseph Paul. 45.9 -M424 ggi Z Wygzw f , xi ' If ,. A ..
