Christine Oleiniczak GROWTH TOWARD MATURITY AS FIRE IS NECESSARY TO BRING THE TAPER TO LIFE, SO TOO THE- SPIRITUAL, INTELLECTUAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OF A BALANCED CATHOLIC EDUCATION WILL PROGRESS TOWARD MATURITY. KNOWLEDGE DISPERSES THE SHADOWS OF IGNORANCE AND IGNITES THE HOPE OF FUTURE PROMISE. MATURITY IMPLIES A RECOGNITION OF GOALS, AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW BEST TO ATTAIN THEM. WE HAVE SOUGHT AN EDUCATION HERE AT MADONNA EOR THE SAME REASON EOR WHICH GOD CREATED US. TO KNOW, LOVE, SERVE, AND GLORIFY HIM NOW AND FOR ETERNITY. HERE WE ARE EDUCATED AS WOMEN, TO FULFILL A WOMAN'S ROLE IN GOD'S WORLD. BUT MATURITY BRINGS WITH IT NO REST FOR SOUL, HEART, OR MIND. A THE MATURE WILL BE SEARCHING EVER FOR TRUTH, AND THEIR MINDS ARE OPEN EVER TO RECEIVE IT, THEIR HEARTS TO LOVE IT, AND THEIR SOULS TO CLASP IT FOREVER. Bishop of Buffalo THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF ANY STUDY YOU MAY LEARN BY BOOKS AT HOME, BUT THE DETAIL, THE COLOR, THE TONE, THE AIR, THE LIFE WHICH MAKES IT LIVE IN US, YOU MUST CATCH ALL THESE FROM THOSE IN WHOM IT LIVES ALREADY. -John Henry' Newman OUR BISHOP On May I, 1963, a new chapter in the history of the Buffalo diocese began with the installation of His Excellency, James A. McNulty, D. D., as Bishop of Buffalo. Although he has been here iust a year, his warmth and sincerity have already been felt throughout Western New. York. Our Bishop was born in New York City but spent most of his life in New Jersey. There he grew up and went to school. He was graduated from Seton Hill College, and the Church, recog- nizing his leadership potential, sent him to the University of Louvain in Belgium to study for the priesthood. At the age of twenty-five, Bishop McNulty was ordained in Belgium. Adding to the solemnity of the occasion, his brother, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. John L. McNulty, became a priest in the same cere- mony. Our Bishop began his priestly career as assistant pastor in St. Joseph's parish, Jersey City. In 'I947 he received the fullness of the priesthood, and became titular Bishop of Methone and Aux- iliary Bishop of Newark. Now stationed in Buffalo, His Excellency brings with him diverse administrative experience and deep interest and concern for all his people. We, the students and faculty of Madonna High School, join the entire diocese in greeting Bishop McNulty and in wishing him a long and fruitful Episcopate. Eliilil I Q. WEEE' 1535, Very Reverend Monsignor Leo A. Hammerl Superintendent of Schools - Reverand Norman J. McLaughlin Assistant Superintendent Reverend' Bernard J. Magee Instructor in Religion Mr. J. Alan Davitt Director of Secondary Education OUR LEADERS These priests and lay leaders of the Diocese of Buffalo have worked zealously for the extension of Catholic education. They have as one of their most pertinent obiectives the preparing of youth for the challenges they will encounter upon leaving high school. It is through the persistent wisdom and labor of these devoted men that we are sharing in all the benefits of a Cath- olic education at Madonna High School. To these outstanding Catholics, we extend our sincerest appreciation and encourage- ment to continue their efforts in this truly apostolic cause. The Reverend Alexander T. Pocetto, The Reverend John l. Birkenheurer, and the Reverend Paul Francis are among the zealous Oblates of St. Francis de Sales who are always ready to help Madonna girls in their spiritual needs. Retreat is a time of many graces. As our retreat masters the Reverend Fathers Marcellus and James Anthony C P leave the chapel they will be greeted by B. Confer, V. Laka, J Slish and B Kubnck MATURE IN FAITH Throughout our four years at Madonna, we students find ourselves evolving into fervent, God-fearing followers of Christ. We realize this transformation has been brought about by weekly attendance at Mass, reception of Holy Communion, frequent visits to the chapel, and the yearly retreat, which provides much-needed advice and untold spiritual blessings. Also an important factor in our development is the daily ex- ample of our priests, our parents, the Sisters, and our lay teachers. To them we owe a very special debt of gratitude for our precious gift of a vivid, living faith which comes to us through encouragement, love and vigilance. At Madonna' we have learned to place our faith and trust in God. This love of Him will help us develop into devoted Catholic women. We have learned the art of Christian living-going to Jesus through Mary-and now we want to exemplify this art by doing God's will in all things. Each Tuesday finds M. DeBartels participating in the lay apostolate as she gives religious instruction to these public school children. ix-.-.f..g:fg..,.. ........m.. LANGUAGES Through languages we are introduced to new and exciting lands, we learn of simple folk, and of famous authors, heroes, and statesmen. Through languages we learn what to say, how to say it effectively, and why. A mastery of one's own langauge is indispensible to all phases of life, a knowl- edge of one or more foreign languages is a necessity as world vision becomes broader and more complex. Visions of France and Gay Paree haunt the dreams of S. Netzer, P. Ciurczak, E. Caterina, and E. Edgette. 'wil l S 2 i SOCIAL STUDIES The past, the present, and a glimpse into the future are offered to us in social studies. Why is there revolution, famine, progress, depression? What are the principles of democracy? How did the twisted doctrine of Communism arise? How is the American economy run? These and all the questions a student can dream of are answered. To take a course in social studies is to embark on a fascinat- ing educational voyage. Life takes on a new aspect as we learn about the cultures of other lands, their industrial development, their scientific progress and their needs and problems. We can understand why situations occur and even anticipate new ones which follow the pattern of the old. The modern pace demands that we be familiar with the world in which we live. It is essential to our genera- tion to be a constant observer of world affairs-quick to lend a helping hand when possible, and alert to guard against dangers to the remarkable world we inhabit. The all-purpose room is brightened with a display of citizenship educa- tion proiects on our neighbor to the north. S. Kotlarz, D. Sawicki, and S. Fitzpatrick admire the results of their labors. R d th n or histor class Creative talent and nimble fingers help sew the way to success tor P. Askey, C. Moloney, M. Milan, R. Biggins, G. Clark, and L. Spollino. HOMEMAKING One way to ca mon's heart is through cooking, and C. Moloney, G. Thomas, K. Janik, T. Heagerty, M. Pellicono, M. Moncrino, M. DeMortino, R. Stcnek, and J. Bruno seem to have mastered the art! 56 Prize oil paintings below are the work of students in Mrs Flynns art class. Top: K. Gallagher and K. Janik. Below: M. Flynn and K. Deal. ART Art is found not only in a lovely painting, but in the whole world about us. A glance at the blue of the heavens, the green ot the stately trees, the ruddy brown of the good earth-all these are truly artistic. Art is all of God's creation-either in its natural state or remolded by human hands. Art reflects our Creator's magni- tude and generosity, it symbolizes human characteristics. Art is pure, untainted beauty, wholesome in its lines. Art has many facets: perspective, design, composition-all reflecting in some way the Eternal Beauty. 57 S X A i 4 wx X xg -X A. Could it be that they work together to make people he-PPV? , The Incarnation of Our Saviour is one of the most beautiful truths of our faith. No generation seems to tire of hearing its story. There is something magical about the star of the East, the lowly stable, the choirs of angels. Peace and reas- surance dwell about the tiny Child, His loving Mother and her spouse. Representing Mary and Joseph here are C. Aydelotte, Sodality prefect, and M. Pellicano, senior class pres- ident. What is Christmas without a chorus? With their voices raised in song we find M. Pellicano, M. McConnaghy, S. Erti, l.. Graca, J. Gravelle, K. Deal, M. Normand, R. Stanek, K. Janik, J. Kosut, C. Maloney, N. Lewis, with director C. Hook. 67 Journalism, photography, typing, and hard work are the ingredients of our school newspaper, The Maryenne. It gives the statt a taste ot newspaper activity and ac- quaints our students with the highlines and bylines of a busy school's activities. lts members must measure up to the requirements of promptness for deadlines, de- pendability for those extra iobs, originality for the special feature, and perservance for that polished look, their reward is the quarterly newspaper. The Maryenne vies for keen student approval and renders service on many fronts. Our newspaper is made possible through the efforts of a dedicated staff under the supervision of co-editors C. Dent and M. Wolf. THE MARYENNE Typists for the Maryenne, P. Glemb, S. Gigliell, S. D'Ambrosio, and P. Colosi gather around P. Hansen to take a glance at their work in print. The editorial staff of the Maryenne, L. Heiman, C. Dent, S. Szabo, M. Flaherty, S. Canavan, and K. McAlhaney have gathered under the supervision of M. Wolf to dis- cuss the merits of their latest issue. THE MADCDN NA Photographs, old copy, good copy and a good dose of imagination go into The Madonna. The hard-working editorial staff includes: ffirst rowj A. Marino, S. D'Ambrosio, K. Foggia, S. Amery, J. Paonessa, Isecond rowj L. Connor, A. Splendore, P. Bankowski, C. Gazy and M. McMahon. Mr. Webster defines the word yearbook in the following manner- a book published I yearly as a summary of statistics or facts. ' But to any of the girls who have contributed their time and talents to the publication of the 1964 Madonna, the word yearbook possesses an entirely different meaning. To them it is the fulfiillment of a dream which M, Flynn ls ,esponslble lo, all llle skllllul all work evolved from a conglomeration of pictures, written copy and a- rough draft. lt is a price- in Ovr '64 Yedfbvvk- less history of precious friendships and treasured memories brought into existence through the combined efforts of our yearbook moderator, editors, and an indefatigable staff. l Business editor Christine Oleiniczak and her staff of typists, l including P. Madei, P. Glemb and B. Sliwowski, are busy con- centrating on their typing. Co-editors M. Paonessa and S. Szabo will tell you that this is where the yearbook begins -on the dummy sheet with all the measurements and planning. l 69 ...,..'MmWesxwwwmws ss--ss-s s Wwsw.-..W.s.Ms-wages-,..,: ,,,, T ..... as mera--eg----ss-W-1,W., ' 'Z SN .xQQ, X if S X Rf .X lt ' I X gsirxx xy? Through it pass most maior requests and decisions which' form student body policies. Following parliamentary proce- dure, this vital organ lends life to the ideals learned as citizens of a democratic republic. Elected representa- tives from each homeroom and major school organiza- tions freely express their views in an atmosphere of patient understanding which is conducive to progress. Here, faculty and students resolve their problems with comparable ease. The Council develops school spirit through active participation in and promotion of student activities. This organization of Madonna is dedicated to insure the general welfare, both physical and mental, of all the students through uncompromising service and serviceable compromise. At the Student Council Bazaar Homeroom 'l'l0 discovered that Madonna's sweet tooth is strong and healthy. How much is that doggie in the box? inquire E. McDonald, A. O'Laugh- lin, A. Zeifang, and S. Amery. 1 Mother M. Paracleta and Sister M. Bertille seem to appreciate the hard work and creative ability of M. McCarthy and T. Rachwal. 72 'N X. X X Xxx 5.3 ...s Stl E . Sodalists M. S. Pellicano, A. Aydelotte, P. Gaffney, B. Sawicki, and E. McDonald are ready to present their panel on Mother McAuley, as Monsignor Carey con gratulates M. Flaherty on the reception of her senior pin. SODALITY GF OUR LADY Flowers beautify the altar as C. Aydelotte, prefect, crowns Our Lady. Gay smiles and laughter are the obvious results at a very swinging Father-Daughter dance sponsored by the Sodality. The Sodality of Our Lady is a way of life. It is a sincere devotion to Mary cultivated by Sodalists through the recitation of the Little Office, the rosary, and mental prayer, along with various apostolic works. Although it sponsors social functions, the or- ganization's purpose is that its members attain a close, loving union with Christ through Mother Mary. F a r V N The assassination of our president, John Fitzgerald Ken- nedy, will remain the most shocking and profound experi- ence of our senior year. Anxiety, disbelief, and prayerful supplication swept in turn through our hushed halls and classrooms on that November afternoon. For us Mr. Ken- nedy and his courageous wife remain the symbol of all that is finest in young Catholic America. Now The torch is passed to a new generation. . . May his great soul rest in peace. NOVEMBER 22, 1963 I I I I I Gala festivities mark the end of the school year for the iuniors and seniors. Here old friends meet at the. last formal gather- ing before graduation. I You see, ladies, the ability to remember is utterly unique. The object is to associate the idea to be 1 remembered with something familiar. So say L. Connor, P. Ciurczak, G. Critelli, C. Sirianni, M. C SO' and N. Oggiono. Here ar four seniors who dfanced their way through Madonna. Their lively and original step del d a spark to our programs: B. Sawicki, M. McMahon, A. S plenclore, and S. Szabo. DRAWS TO A CLOSE. EACH CLASS, I EACH ACTIVITY HAS BROUGHT US CLOSER TO THE ULTIMATE WIS- DOM THAT IS GOD.
