Burke, D.D1, our spiritual leader since 1952, has al- ways had as his prime pastoral concern the welfare of his flock in the Diocese of Buffalo in Western New York. In keeping with this concern, one of his greatest desires is the furthering of Catholic education, for he is aware that today's students are tomorrow's leaders. For this reason, Madonna High School was founded. Bishop Burke has given his fatherly interest to each school entrusted to his care, and has worked zealously for its spiritual benefit. Our sincere gratitude and prayers for our beloved Bishop! His Excellency, Bishop Leo R. Smith, D.D. , a consecrated leader of the government of the Catholic Church, has worked intimately with the youth of our growing nation-guiding souls to God. He has striven to instill in them a steadfast dedication to God and country. His zealous devotion to the potential of American youth is exemplined in his estab- lishment of the Catholic Youth Movement in the Diocese of Buffalo and in his advoca- tion of the National Federation of Diocesan Catholic Youth Councils, a unified organiza- tion of young Catholics which he serves in his oflicial capacity of Episcopal Moderator. THE Mosr REVEREND LEO R. SMITH, D.D. ALAN DAVIT1- Director of .Secondary Education X 1 e E. 1 Y , iYf+l Christ Himself is the life-spring of Catholic educationg the faculty, the channels through which knowledge and love of Himself pour forth to enrich and invigorate the Christ- life of the Catholic student. The Sisters of Mercy have, for over a century, striven to convey Christ's powerful message of love as taught and practiced by their saintly foun- dress, Mother Mary Catherine McAuley. Our faculty, her devoted daughters, have en- deavored to instill in us the spirit of Mercy, to form in us an ardent love of Our Saviour and a filial devotion to Mary, our model in Christian womanhood. It is to them that we, the Seniors of Madonna, nearing the end of our high school days, turn in love and gratitude. f Mt Qfg ,, M, ' MA Iirnili, i Sister Mary Eloise advises Marsha Grose, Eirin Sheedy, and Carol Greaser on filing college applications. E3 'fm Wrapping Christmas gifts for the lay teachers is a happy re- sponsibility of B. O'Connor, S: johnson, C. Kolaga and J. Johnson. The Student Council was established to function as an organ through which the stu- dents might present their opinions and de- sires concetning the general welfare of the school. Here, ideas and suggestions are pre- sented for the consideration of the faculty, and any problems which may arise are dis- cussed among the representatives under the guidance of the Council's moderator. More important, perhaps, than the tangible func- tioning of the Student Council is the fact that, in its essence a democratic organization, the Student Council serves as an example of the democratic way of life, the life which We must be prepared to live as ,citizens of the United States. J. Guzdeic presents the Student Council Banner to the repre- sentative of Room 111, K. Perlman. The banner is merited by cooperation and participation in school activities. Madonna girls who be- long to the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin are being patriotic in a very practical way. Imitation of Mary's virtues, to which the Sodalist is dedicated, will bring about a stronger and happier America. Sodality prefect, S. Johnson, kneels before Our Lady and thanks her for a successful year. A high point of the Sodality's many activities is the annual outdoor crowning of the Blessed Mother. if ,, W l A M Si Llxfw iilgifligl 55351 rp .N 1 .. . S -.,-.: - x--v : - ,K ..
