His patience and under- standing have guided us through four years of high school. His philosophy of thinking of others first and of himself last has made him a person we will long remember. Out of deep respect, admiration, and appreciation, we proudly dedicate this 1957 Madisonian to you, Mr. William Kopcial. yi, F- A VE EP ffn 46 va 'E Mrs. Rhodebeck Advisor Nancy Meyer-Editor Pat liichof-Assistant Editor Darl Tingleyl- Business Manager Dave Shrewsberry-Advertising Manager John Constance-Advertising Ruth Maginness-Seniors Shirley Spencer-Girl's athletics and typist Jean McGrath-Faculty and Adminis- tration Marlene Baish-C-irl's athletics and typist Pat McBride-Features Kay Shade-Underclassmen Linda Barr-Clubs Charles Barnhill-Athletics Bruce Workman-Underclassmen Lee Carns-Art Editor Lynn McBride-Advertising, Judy Boals-Art liditor Phyllis Gnagy-Music fVoCalj Pat liichof, Assistant liditor Nancy Meyer, liditorg Dave Shrewsbtrrv Ad vertising Managerg andliarl lmbltv Business Manager. Helen Braen is Mr. Miller's very able secretary. Helen has been at Madison for eight years. Among some of her many duties are: recording grades , taking care of attend- ance, and taking care of incoming money. We don't know how the faculty or student body could get along without her assistance and influence. We only know that, without Helen, our four years at Madison would never have been complete, and we will never for- get her for being our genuine friend. mm-w's e 5' f ft Lf' Holding the place of honor in our new offices this year is Mr. Wayne E. Miller. Mr. Miller has been principal of Madison High School for 29 years. Through our four years at Madison we have come to have a very high regard for a really wonderful principal. He has proved to be a great influence to the graduating class of 57 . He is always ready to help a willing stu- dent and receives enjoyment when one be- comes a success through his aid. We hope that future students will benefit by his lead- David W. Bettiker Attended Bowling Green State University. Subject: Industrial Arts. Mr. Bet- tiker is a reserve basket- ball coach. Robert M. The high school routine was strange at first, and going to wrong classes was quite common during the first few days. The leaders of our first year at Madison were Jo Ann Zimmerman, President, Larry Kidwell, Vice- President, Nancy Meyer, Secretaryg and Richard Graszl, Treasurer. Miss Stout and Mr. Sutter were appointed to be our class advisors. Our first year's big event was the freshman box social given in the early spring. Our sophomore year was crowded with many events. We chose Jeanne Brown as President, Dale Garrison as Vice-President, Barbara Windsor as Secretary, and Ken Baker as Treasurer. Raising money for the prom was our main objective that year. September, 19551 At last we President, Jim Halbrooks, Vice-President, Bill Edwards, Secretary, and Bill Milliron, Treasurer. One of history was our Junior Class Play. Beauty and the Beef. We were very were upperclassmenl We were under the leadership of Donald Peterson, the brightest spots of our class busy that year raising money for the year's most exciting event, the J unior-Senior Prom. As Seniors we chose Donald Peterson, President, Dar1Tingley, Vice-President, Ray Maffett, Secretary, and Bill Milliron, Treasurer. The outstanding event in the fall of '56 was our class play, Funny Face. The production of the annual, the planning of our class trip, and finally GRADUATION climaxed our four wonder- ful years of working and planning. , J ,, iii- 2 .--q -az 1 ig :Baia -I ag: ..:f'ea:- a'-A - ' Ll-ft - ' . Ken Baker starred as he made four TD's, to lead the Rams to a 46-20 win. In the second half, Joe Kaufman also plunged over the line for a TD. Orrville's three touchdowns were all made by Arnold, a fine back. Joe Kaufman kicked three extra points for Madison. All in all this was a fine game and it showed just what our boys can do. The line deserves a big hand for their fine job. The backs also should be congratulated for the splendid job they did. Shelby: About 3,000 shivering fans watched the Northern Ohio League Champs, the Shelby Whip- pets, defeat the fighting Madison Rams by a score of 13-6. The Rams held them for the first half to a 0-0 tie. The Hilltoppers got the first score with about 7 minutes left in the third quarter. Kaufman's conversion was wide, making the score 6-0, The Whippets then took over on the Rams' 48. The Hilltoppers just couldn't seem to hold them back and they ground out the necessary yardage and scored on a one-yard plunge, but missed the extra point. The fourth quarter was a see-saw battle until Shelby took the ball on their own 31 yard line and ground their way to pay dirt with l minute left in the game. The kick from place- ment was good, making the score 13-6. Upper Sandusky: An inspired Ram team seeking revenge for last year's beating won their ninth. straight game against Northern Ohio League cham- pions, Upper Sandusky. Madison took the opening kick-off and marched 91 yards to score. End Bill Milliron took a punt on his own 20-yard line and returned it 80 years for the Ram's second TD. With 28 seconds to go in the second period, Baker took the ball over from the one-yard line, making the score at half time 21-O. The Rams still lead 21-13 early in the final quarter. Midway in the final quarter Baker broke away and went 70 yards for the Ram's final TD, Kaufman converted on all the touchdowns, making the final score 28-13. Mount Vernon: A fine Mt. Vernon team edged over the Madison Rams 2635 on Ram Hill on September 21 before a packed house' of 3,750. The bitter battle ended the Ram's nine game win streak. In the first quarter, Ken Baker sprinted 62 yards in the final minutes for the first touch- down, and George Rice scored the second tally just before the gun sounded at the half. Mt, Ver- non also scored twice in the first half and made both extra points which put them 2 points ahead of Madison. The second half was much like the first, with one team getting the ball and scoring and the other team doing the same. Scores for the Rams in the second half were made by Kaufman in a 70-yard run and a 10-yard pass from Larry Luedy to Jim Merrick. The extra points of the game proved to be the deciding factor, as Madison was downed 26-25. y igaxg , VAR ITY FOQTBALL Lf g W I y sw :Sullll -.g r X. ip ,W t . ,Q 5,1 .. k . Q Q R 1 Wt. . - f Y fm Coached by Roger McGee, the 1956 Rams had a fine season of 4 wins and 5 losses. Four of these games were lost by only a total of9 points, extra points being a deciding factor in three games. The team started off with a bang, beating Upper Sandusky 28-13, then hard luck came. The team lost to Mt. Vernon by one point, and then went on to beat a fine Toledo team. The team went on to win 2 more and dropping 4. Even though the Rams wound upwitha season of 4 and 5 record, we had an excellent team this year. Their stubborn fighting spirit is well known for this season. VARSHW'BASKETB LL The Varsity Basketball team this year was sparked by Seniors Tom Craze and Bill Mill- iron. Larry Luedy, Morris Hicks, and Jim Mer- rick, along with Tom and Bill made up the starting five. It was a thrilling experience for them to be the first team to play in the new gymnasium, but something turned the team's luck in the middle of the season. The change of floors might have been a possible factor. The 1956 and 1957 record, when this book went into production was 4 won, and 10 lost, with 3 more games to play. The Reserve team is under the guidance of Mr. Bettiker. The reserve team made some very good showings during the season even though it was not a winning one. Madison can well expect some high style basketball in the future from this year's reserve. The Freshmen basktball team is the prov- ing ground for future varsity participants. The freshmen team shows good potential for the 1959- 1960 varsity. They are coached by Joe Miller. RESER E ' - Selby . R L' to R, Ron Egistliauzllian. Coach Bettiker' Mex A S K E T B L L Schwaner. I'm just plum tuckered out after that trip. Well, now, that looks like a likely landing spot. The Peterson Observatory is directly below. Well, if it isn't Prof. Donald Peterson and, wow, get a load of his assistant, Linda. I'm just raring to go after that winter snooze. Let's take a look over the city - you never know who you might run into. Well, I'll be - the circus is in town. And such a crowd! Well, there's one fellow who isn't having any trouble seeing. He towers over everyone. My goodness, if it isn't Jim Halhrooks. Now, isn't that nice, he's giving short stuff -LilliWeidle - a lift. My goodness, the barker certainly has extraordinary vocal ability. He sounds just like Pancho Dunham. Thereis Beverly Dickerson and Marilyn Thrush running the refreshment booth, and they're eating more pop corn than they are selling. The side shows look really exciting. The snake charmer is about to do her act. I never thought Ann Miller would wind up doing that. And, of course, the strong men, George Rice and Mike Brown, are showing off as usual, throwing their cute little partner, Beverly Fox, all around. The main event in the Big Top is the trapeze act. Some of the names on the billboard are mighty famil- iar, such as: Tom Mills, Tom Pfeiffer, Mary Hill, Joanne Owens, Phyllis Gnagy, and Jim Hester. The job of watering the elephants must be taken care of, and Bob Sowash and Bob Witchey are taking care of that job in a flourishing manner. Over there is a picture of Dave McClure and a description of his motorcycle act. But the main event is about to begin so I'd better hurry and grab a perch. I see that Bill Warner, Mike McClure and Bruce Workman are putting finishing touches to the show rings and Lynn McBride and Dave Opal are testing the lights. The clowns are the first to come out, and, oh, are they a riot! I see Dave Holdsworth, Pat Dillon, Mickey Talbott, and John Constance, but they are painted up so much that I can hardly recognize them. The Ringmaster, Dave Shrewsberry, has just announced the next act. It is the Three Z's - Curt, Dean, and Larry - performing their superb bicycle act. Boom! What was that? I think I'll peek outside and see. It's a bird, it's a plane, NO, it's Linda Barr, being shot out of a cannon! And guess who lit the fuse. It was our old classmate, Paul Williams. l'd better flutter back into the tent before I miss something. Here come the midgets - Barb Paul and Barb White. And there comes the Fat Lady. It's Andrea Tallentire. She certainly has changed since high school days. The dazzling bareback riders are entering the center ring. Shirley Boals, Sandy Pugh, Nancy Young, and Normalu Ayers are certainly putting on a spectacular. The tight rope performers are magnificent and so graceful. They look to me like Mary Plenge and Ed Wander. And the trampoline act is superb. Judy Boals and Ralph Kircher make a splendid team. The world's greatest lion taming act is about to begin with famous Tiny Williams and her pet lion, Bill. They are accompanied by about the loudest brass band I have ever heard and, no wonder, for I see the faces of some of our old buddies from Madison High. There are Pat Eichof, Nancy Meyer, Ginger Moxley, Bill Edwards, Larry Meyers, and Karl Finley. There's Pat Smith at the head of the procession. No show would be complete without a group of trained elephants. Here they come now. Their trainer looks familiar to me, too. It's Lee Carns, and riding on the elephants are none other than Miriam Applegate, Carol Bell, Joyce Shaver, and Georgia Shaffer. Some trained seals are also putting on an act and are being put through their paces by Roger Tupps. The trained dog act is going on in one of the side rings. Roy Brown is the trainer with Nancy Brumfield as his very able assistant. Two of the most famous unicyclists in the world are here today. I wonder how they manage to stick on those big high one-wheeled tricycle. That would be harder than flying. The ones who are performing here are Connie Beer and Larry Kidwell. I'm getting a little tired, so guess I'll fly out for a little fresh air and grab a bite to eat. l don't suppose they serve hugs and worms here, so I'll have to stick to cooked meat. I even recognize the waitresses at that hamburger stand over there. They are Kay Shade and Carol Brown. There are some hamburger consumers sitting there and I recognize them, too. Dave Pisel, Bruce Workman, and Charles Barnhill are munching away as usual. Wow! Some of these sideshows look really exciting! Guess I'll fly in and see this sword-swallowing act for a few minutes. Oh, no, it just can't be Calvin Smith and Tom Craze. But it is! And inthe sideshow is a knife'-thrower, whom I recognize as Ron Scheurer, and his poor victim looks like Shirley Spencer. Right next door are some fire eaters. They're probably some of my old friends, too, so l'd better look in on them. Yes, I was right. There are Janet Hill and Tom Mitchell swallowing fire right and left and then blowing it into the air. I think I'll take a little flying trip over the midway and see who I can see there. There's one of the hig- gest ferris wheels I've ever seen, and there is Marlene Baish running it. I think she's arguing with Mary Tallentire, because Mary tried to get herself, Barb Windsor, and Gay Nadason all on the ferris wheel for the price of one ticket. C ASS PROPHECY Fhere comes Ruth Maginness down the midway with about thirty little kiddies following her and they're all shouting to ride on the merry-go-round. It seems that she picked today to take her first grade class on a field trip because they were studying about the circus. I wonder why those people went to ride in the airplanes. lf they were birds, like me, they could do their own flying, But there are Mary Haynes, Wanda Chew, and Pat Moritz, getting off the planes, and goodness, they can't even walk in a straight line. What's wrong, girls? This certainly has been an excitingday. But everyone is getting eager to beat the crowd on the way home. That policeman is having quite a time, Why, it's Dick Graszl, that's a switchl Some of the drivers are getting pretty angry. Some guy is leaning on his horn and he's about tearing his hair out. It looks like Darl Tingley. I didn't know he could bethatway. Here comes the typical woman driver, When the policeman says Go she stops. Yes, it's Janet Waggoner, No wonder she isn't paying any attention to the policeman. She's got Sandra Shrader with her and they're too busy talking to notice anything. I think l'll buzz along on my trip before I get into any difficulties. Oh, there's one guy pulled over to the side of the road now and it looks like the policeman is writing him a ticket, Poor Lynn Snodgres, he's still collecting tickets. Well, this is all folks. l'll fly along my way now, but l'll be sure to stop to see what you're doing another ten years from now.
