f,l l'1 5 I1 l THE MADISQNIAN MB IH NINETEEN THIRTY sux THE HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 36 In September of 1932 there enrolled as Freshmen at Madison the largest class on record approximately one hundred in number Wlth a class of this slze it took the greater part of the first semester to become acquainted and organized We elected Betty Ross presldent and Joe Schuif secretary wlth Coach Fendrlck as general advisor Everything was just begmnmg to functlon nicely when what should we see upon arrxvmg at school one nice mornmg but a new face among our teachers It did not take us long to find out that she was there to stay as Miss Hershler was marrled We soon became acquainted with our new teacher Mxss Mason whom we liked very much Not long after we had our first soc1al event of the year Thls consisted of a wlener roast and party com bined Perhaps the biggest event of the year for the class was the presentatlon of the plav Elmer Some of the more talented members of the class gave thxs as part of the program at ooen house nlght 'Ihe year closed very successfully as we won first hon ors in Fxeld Day When the school bells rang n the fall of 33 we were smaller m number but we possessed greater v1m v1gor vitality and the desire to get ahead fast We soon be came acquainted wlth our new teachers M1ss Mxlls and Mr McFadden When the final return. or tl L electron were 1n It was found that Mr Nlxon had been chosen as our class ad visor for our Sophomore year mth John Esselburn as p esident Margaret Oswalt as VICE presldent and Dor othy Thomas as secretary and treasurer November came and passed but not before we had held a most enjoyable Thanksglvlng party at the school Perhaps the Sophomore glrls had to have some means of expressmg then' happxness 1D our wmnmg the Mxd State League Football Champxonshxp as a result wlthm a short time they could all be seen wearmg bangs Fol lowing closely on the heels of th1s came the measles with almost everyone catchmg them On February 2 the Home Econmlcs Club was organ ized with Miss Mllls as adv1sor Later in the same month we were forced to share along with Ontarlo the County Basketball Champxon ship We decided when Mnss Mason became Mrs Dlffendor fer that all teachers must sooner or later marry for better or worse Mxss Smlth came to take her place and remained to help us flnxsh a most eventful year When school started rn our Jumor year our member ship had fallen to seventy m number We organlzed once agaln w1th Jack Yoha presldent Dorothy 'Ihomas vice p esldent Pearl Long secretary John Esselburn treasurer and Mlss Smlth advisor Not long after th1s one of our number Miss Pauline Weaver passed on to a happler land December came and wlth xt the Jumor Play Oh Pro fes or It was a p'ay not to be forgotten soon by any of the class This year also brought lnto existence a new organl zatlon the Scrence Club This was organlzed under the supervxslon of Mr Nlxon for the purpose of promoting ary Soclety was orgamzed ln the Pubhc Speakrng Class wlth Mr McFadden as leader March came around and blew IU the Junior party wrth all the k1ddLh people It also blew up the Op retta Wlndmllls of Holland May came before we knew xt and b ought wlth It the Banquet at which our ship mates all had a good tune Everyone then turned thelr attemon to the Seniors so they would know how to act next year Fall rolled around more quickly than ever and th1s tlme found us all together for the last tlme We soon organized by choosing F ederlck Domka for presldent wlth Paul Klpp as vice presxdent Rachel Blshop was chosen secretary but as she soon moved to Mount Ver non was replaced by Evelyn Hoover John Esselburn was elected treasurer We were all dlsappomted when the school lost the football cup but we want them to go out and Wm next year 1f we are here only in splrlt to help Everything went along quletly untll the mxddle of February About th1s tlme we all looked at the blrdle with as dlgnlfied all' as posslble The final events of the year mcluded the Operetta Glrl Reserves Banquet and G A A and M Banquet The last month opened Wlth the May Day program We then realized that the end was not far off Two weeks later everyone received lxttle white en velcp s from the Jumors These were the xnvltatxons to the annual Junior Semor Banquet We all had a nice tlme at the banquet thanks to the Junlors Our final week opened with the Baccalaureate Serv lces followed by the play which no one w1ll forget Com mencement closed a glorious four year period for us With not only a few tears shed we take leave of our school Ramona Swisher Aileen Schafer Ina Weatherble Richard Hunt ,if -1: , df' , M '--1... .,,, A 3 nl- .2 ,1 7' ::' s::eiEEi I I ' ' i W ' A , nl ll l n - -I 53 ll:gg::g:g:f :1:::!-i'l:lE5-ji, L Lg V nn.
