Mm 4. .Q T .mm -'M ' t ci. the year turned. 1 MACCN's cruise to distant South America in direct support of the Com mander-in-Chief was a late edition to the Caribbean itinerary. th Scuttlebutt of this complex operation was already rampant when new year bid the old adieu, and it was only a few days after our depaflsgi Q from Boston for evaluation of the ANXSPS-30 radar that the initial H1955 confirming MACCN's key role in Operation Amigo was received. MACON exchanged winter for summer as it bobbed in the Caribbean and 1 then pointed southward for the lonq ocean voyaqe to Buenos 1girGS.l-Afqegtlglz I' Cn 7 February, she called briefly at Trinidad, a sizzlinq tropical isle O coast of Venezuela, to receive on board RADM E. RADAR EVALUATION CRUISE Visits to Puerto Rico and Trinidad On a crisp, clear Ianuary day, Monday the 4th day of 1960, MACON steamed south for Puerto Rico. The ensuing evaluation of the ANXSPS-30 radar proved frus- trating in the early weeks of the Caribbean operations. Beset by one material failure after another, the electronics group worked long hours to put the 3O back on the line. 'When the equipment was operational CIC personnel labored long days with the radar to complete the schedule of tests within the originally assigned time. The result of this alternate teamwork proved highly satisfactory, but the achievement was gained through beaucoup de perspiration and even a few tears along the way. The sporadic radar operations in lanuary extended MACON's liberty time in San Iuan and its environs. And few of those un- connected with the radar installation ignored the opportunity to go ashore. The pictures that follow largely reflect the pleasurable times in San Iuan-the beach and the healthy climate, the night clubs and casinos which appear in retrospect to have been the main attractions. There goes the second klystron tube, now what. Split. Charlie Two, homeplate l5O. These were the phrases that came drifting out of CIC as the port and starboard evaluation teams struggled daily through ten to twelve hours of SPS 30 radar evalu- ations. While the evaluators in Combat stared intently at their scopes watching for a glimpse of a blip representing a high speed target, the men in the radar room and the dare devils on the antenna platform located on the main mast were determined to keep the 30 on the line. Miraculously the radar tests MACON set out to accomplish were complete when the ship set sail for Trinidad to begin her long cruise south to Buenos Aires. A hearty Well Done was due the Cl and CE divisions and the engineers who lent an oft- needed assist.
