1 t l Q Xp Yard overhaul. The extended yard period in the fall of 1959 was the first for the MACON in 18 months. Decks were renewed, gun mounts were chipped to bare metal and repainted, and boilers were broken down and purged of accumulated soot. Brown baggers arriving and departing almost caused one to forget that one's business address was both mobile and powerful. Orphans, scouts, mid- shipmen and other stray groups toured the MACON with en- thusiasm equal to that of the most impressed foreigner. The holi- days were celebrated colorfully and joyfully. Families plied the passageways awaiting the carving and serving of Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys. The family of MACON drew closer as the tie that bound its members rested silently alongside Pier Seven West. 'T 4 X s x t X ' .4 Q it Qkwf 1 . -1 :sw
