Operai101'1 Fairwind, in which MACON was stationed, in the initial West-East, East- West Search and Rescue position during the Presidents transatlantic flights, took us to the Scottish port of Glasgow on the River ClYCl9 for '3 brief two-day visit. A few braved the train trip spanning the narrow Scottish peninsula and visited the colorful city of Edinburgh, just concluding its celebrated annual music and drama festival. The tedious homeward trip took us along a more southern route. The monotony of steaming in squares about our SAR position was relieved after four days when Captain Wylie steamed at 25 knots across the Atlantic. A glorious sunset cast the harbor of Boston in rich color for our long- anticipated return. MACON arrived in Boston from the unusual cruise through the Great Lakes a well-traveled and slightly road-weary ship, and hopefully an- ticipated an extended in-port period in her home port. But, fate would not have it thus, and beckoned her to cruise to Scotland in connection with President Eisenhower's diplomatic visitations in the capitals of the West- ern Allies Prepared to embark the President for a swift tri either eastward - I3 or westward, MACON eventually assumed merely a Search and Rescue insurance role. The short cruise to and from Glasgow was marked by the sighting of drifting icebergs, a rather inaccurate gunnery shoot at these unusual targets, and a ship-wide poll to elect the Saltiest Sailor aboard. Returning to Boston in mid-September, we commenced that long lflioped-for yard period, broken only by a brief cruise for 30 outstanding igh school science students to the Narraganset Bay area in late September and a radar evaluation cruise in early December. ANXQQS-3152 pfijfit .for the yard period was 'the installation of the I eig t inding radar gear. This 1nstallat1on was well underway when Captain Reuben T. Whitaker reported aboa d t f I .
