On Sunday, 7 February 1960, about 90 men of the United States Navy Band walked aboard our ship in Trinidad. ln the intervening weeks we came to know these men well. Someone once said that the man whose heart had listened to the music of a lovely melody was in honor bound to set the whole world singing. These men truly set the music of life ringing in our own lives. For this we shall always remember them with gratitude. But even more important, these men set melodies ringing in the hearts of our South American neighbors. So, on Thursday, 25 February 1960, one of our own aircraft, manned by a crew from VR 1 at Patuxent River, took twenty of our band aboard their aircraft, along with eleven members of an ASW team, bound for Rio. About 1315, in a mid-air collision, thirty-five Navy men lost their lives. ln a real sense these men are heroes. They gave their lives in the cause of peace! They were ambassadors in the highest and best sense speaking a universal language to the hearts of men without regard of border, breed or birth. Our Executive Officer p-ut it well when he said that these men . . . all of them . . . have represented our country with courage and distinction. What seemed to be a voyage which would be remembered as The Presidential Cruise will always be recorded in our hearts as The Cruise of the United States Navy Band. We wish it were possible- for us to tell the wives, the sons and daughters and the fathers and mothers of our departed friends that to have been ship- mates with them has been truly a thrilling and rewarding experience. It will be profitable for us to recall the reason we loved them so well: they gave of themselves freely and unstintingly. Truly, they did their best to set the whole world singing. For this, we shall remember them.
