.,-H - s ti ,,,- E.. tmsfmt Crown of Happiness While unspoken dreams died silently within the hearts of many, the dreams of four exalted girls became reality as they were announced the 1974 Homecoming Court. After several days of careful deliberation of which girl each student felt more deserving of this honor, three nominations were made in each grade in senior high with the exception of the seniors who only selected two. When the deciding votes were cast and calculated, Debbie What- ley was announced Sophomore representa- tive and Ginny Smith was selected as the ju- nior attendant. The Senior class was represented by Leah Segrest and Meg Gra- ham. The suspense soared as it was an- nounced that the Queen would not be re- vealed until the pep rally the following Friday. Tension mounted as the girls prepared them- selves for their presentation to the student body at pep rally, and the familiar routine of biting fingernails and shaky knees ran its course. After each girl had received her flow- ers and was introduced as part of the Home- coming Court, hopes, dreams, and a few tears filled each girl's heart as Meg Graham was an- nounced the 1974 Homecoming Queen. Half-time entertainment on the night of the Homecoming game was focused on the pre- sentation of the Queen and her court while the band softly played The Way We Were. As Carolyn Edwards, the retiring '73 Queen, crowned her successor, her escort, Randy Dykes, and crown bearer, Thomas Varner, were by her side, the impact of the moment was upon the crowd and a standing ovation was heard and felt by all. With a tremendous week of tears, fun, and hard work behind them the student body re- laxed after a landslide victory against Scott and attended the homecoming dance held in honor of the Queen and her court. Ending a suspense-filled week, Leah con- gratulates Meg with a warm embrace. A proud mother and her queen. Debbie Whatley, sophomore attendant, projects an enchanting smile as she is presented at homecoming pep rally. Ginny Smith, junior attendant, is escorted by George Varner during the half-time presenta- tion of the Homecoming court. 27
