Lynn Long's determined expression reveals the extreme concentration each MA Varsity cheer- leader must possess to achieve perfection in cheering. jinnie Webster and jane Edwards spent much of their summer vacation at a Baptist Church Camp in Shocco Springs. lane Sheppard and Rodney Cox represent many of MA's mountain riders during the adventur- ous summer months. Before beginning her dazzling week long stay at Girls' State, linnie Webster checks over her luggage. MA Students, lndustrious Yet Carefree The termination of the '73-'74 school year marked the commencement of still another lazy, carefree summer for most MA students. But for a few stu- dents with an eagerness to be useful and overpowered by a lust for money, summer employment was acquired. The more leisurely groups indulged in such activities as working with home- town clubs, baking under the smelter- ing sun, roaming the hills of Tennes- see, daydreaming in the fantasy land of Disney World, or simply doing and seeing as much or as little as possible. While the industrious students spent their precious summer vacation work- ing in local department stores, dairy bars, hospitals, camps, and various odd jobs. Armed with opened minds and an ea- gerness for perceiving new revela- tions, the cheerleaders, majorettes, and flags ventured to clinics in hopes of gaining new insights toward the betterment of their individual organi- zation. Their many hours of laborious work proved beneficial and well worth the effort as they were awarded top honors. Conducting a clinic- of their own, the MA Band practiced several hours a week in preparation for the upcoming football season. Representing MA at Boys' State, Guy Whatley and Billy Segrest traveled to Troy State University where the con- ference was held. They practiced and learned the military and governmental functions of our stateg jinnie Webster represented MA at Girls' State which was held this year at Huntington Col- lege in Montgomery. Receiving the good citizenship award was one of the various honors bestowed upon linnie during the week. 21

jammed Hall- ways Open School On August 28, nearly 600 students all filled with trepidation and bewilder- ment returned to MA after a lazy summer of 3 months. The jammed hallways showed friends meeting for the first time since last yearp strangers with unfamiliar faces and everyone in total uncertainty. With a new untouched year ahead, many changes were introduced to MA. The most significant alteration was the addition of a new head- master, Mrs. Taylor Hostetter. Wher. addressing the student body, Mrs. Hostetter informed all the students of the new rules and policies at MA. Walking around in a daze behind their mothers, the first graders faced the unknown everywhere they turned. The other more experienced elemen- tary students reported to their teachers. After the high school students took roll, they went by classes to the gym for registration. With a choice of nu- merous subjects, each student care- fully arranged his schedule. Seniors especially took care in selecting sub- jects to insure enough credits for graduation. 22 jane Rainer, Pres. of Student Council, warn welcomes the Student body to the first day school. This bewildered group of third graders seem have adjusted speedily to their first day sd1ool. Donna Whatley and Daria Sharpe obviou disagree with the age-old belief that school all bad . Sophomores crowd eagerly around Coach Sl lens to find openings in science classes. l t. A is ll ti ti will if ,lfifmpji
