The students that came to Jacksonville in the Fall of 1967 were both participants in and ob- servers of marked changes in the College and striking dislocations in the outside society. You and your college closely observed an America which was forced by the times to ex- amine its own values. The values of the College were also examined and tested by the demands of the new era especially those of its Christian heritage. The curriculum, which exemplified the best thinking of all earlier periods, was changed in many respects. But for the most part, the curriculum withstood continual evaluations from a changing society. The Class of 1971 reacted to the assassinations of Presidential Candidate Robert Kennedy, Peace Leader Martin Luther King, and two volatile political conventions. And always in the background was the unpopular war in Viet Nam. In your junior year, the traditional requirements of the humanities were buttressed by more flexible graduation requirements and new academic programs, including the MacMurray Urban Semester, and a widely used computer. As juniors, the academic work was again related by you in worth and value to the explosive events at Kent State and in Cambodia. In the final analysis, the effect of the College on the members of the class of 1971 and its role as an institution can be noted only by the quality of your inner life and the ded- cation of your outer behavior and the progress of your continued development as complete persons. As President of the College, I have now had the privilege to voice these tradition- al thoughts about seniors to three succeeding classes: This senior class, today ' s students, tomorrow and forever alumni, has joined with me to put forward our College. With those who have gone before and those who remain behind, we are bound together in a most noble endeavor, part of which includes the development of MacMurray College as an instrument for human service and good. Henceforth, you are MacMurray College, and MacMurray College is you. Our faith, our hopes and our con- fidence reside in you and with you as we wish you Godspeed. John J. Telephone 245-441 1 Portraiture by Bill Wade Jacksonville ' s Nationally Known Master of Photography The 1971 Tartan is an entirely new layout technique presented by Taylor Publishing Company to insure pictorial unity. If the yearbook is looked througl aesthetic eyes, I feel hopeful that it will be appreciated. Again, this year, I must emphasize that it is difficult to produce a yearbook which fairly covers all facets of the campus and the college with a staff of twe ty people. To those who faithfully completed their assigned work, I give praise and gratitude. To do a job where very little reward is received, it is hard to find time and initiative within the self. I give my personal thanks and appreciation to those that did find the perserverance. In particular, I am thankful for the efforts of my roommate. Deb Smego, whose patience in figuring out my layouts alone is most commendable, for her efforts in the Academics section, and her aid the night before page shipments; of Paul Misiak for the remarkable job in selling ads, for the business aspects and aid in layout and shipments; o1 Charlie Jansen whose efforts in compiling pictures and data for the new Fine Arts section were endless, but profitable; of Paula Dumbauld who has success- fully completed the College section entirely of her own accord for the second year in a row; of Carolyn Brelje and Carroll Makemson for taking the entire Organizations sections out of my hands and into their own; of Bob Meyer who always pulled through with last minute pictures; of Rob Heatherly for his tireless developing; of Robbie Robert and Vern Harris for always having their pictures taken on time; of Diana Crisman for setting up sports pictures and th( sports index; of Lorraine Thorns for the College index; of the new photographers and staff members who, although often distressed by my incessant demam and explanations, followed my bidding ceaselessly; and finally of Bill Blewett, our Taylor Publishing Company representative, for his patience and aid durin many frantic phone calls. — Sharon A.
