Foersterling, Faculty Advisor 3 5 7 i 3 16 I 17 18 19 20 21 22 life and thought — practice and theory have always done battle, some periods in america ' s history have given precedence to the practical over the reflective, the practical man has been thought to possess good horse sense — the kind of frontier judg- ment about a person who can get things done. the idealist has been hailed as the impractical— a dreamer who may, at times, be good company, but little else, by and large, the practical man has been the man of the field, the market place, the factory, the idea-man, the dreamer, the man of reflective thought has been the scholar, the man of the academy, pure scientist as opposed to the inventor or the applied scientist. since world war II these distinctions have increasingly been blurred, america for the first time has found the academic world and the industrial world joining hands in what we have labeled the world of technology, research and development are now companions on campus and in factory. the college climate has been modified by the fall-out ot this fact, the present generation of students is alternately studying, seeking the structure of meaning, or attacking in practice the inequities of the race problem, the inhumanities of war, the injustices of poverty, eight years at macmurray have witnessed a change in student life from the apathetic to the aware to the committed, these changes reflect the variations m the mix of idea and fact, of theory and practice, more importantly, they reflect a level of humane concern, larger, at times, than the older generation of teacher and administrator could grasp. the significant thing to a concerned participant, however, has been the high level of responsible decency in student life, these are the colorful days, which carry great promise of a creative future, it is exciting to be a part of them ! gordon e. michalson president Miss S. Flowers by Rieman Thompson Jewelers Russ Vernor Jeweler The Tartan ' 68 was conceived as a far from comprehensive but truth- ful pictorial essay on our campus community ; not as an editorial, but as an objective statement emanating from the college itself. I was greatly pleased to hear such positive response to our treatment of copy and the general format in the Tartan ' 67 because I feel that most year- book copy falls far short of any intended goal and is often too highly personal to be as meaningful and as (generally satisfying as a pictorial essay. Some facets of campus life are undoubtedly lacking in this book. I apologize for the oversight, but a staff of forty or fifty can ' t possibly survey every subtle change in the college environments. The best approach we can offer is a random sampling, hopefully one that is accurate enough to please most. Keeping this in mind a progressive and contemporary format was em- ployed in lieu of the disheveled layouts of other yearbooks, most of which sacrificed good design to bad taste in a weird misconception that the single picture or copy block is the basic aesthetic unit. This regretfully subordinates the total page design to its far too disrelated contents. I am most thankful for an energetic and generally concerned staff which helped to compile this book. In particular, my personal thanks and gratitude goes to Paul Davock, for his ceaseless efforts in shooting, developing, and salvaging many photographs with a near per- fect darkroom technique and whose valuable assistance and sensitive judgements in editing many of the photographs in this volume are greatly appreciated as are his amazing creativity and spontaneity; to Karen Moe, my special assistant and office manager, for her tireless work in coordinating the general office activities and her thorough checking and proofreading of all pages as they progressed toward com- pletion; to Bill Macier, who was responsible for picking up all the pieces and tying the loose ends before each deadline and whose taking over of many of the administrative and business functions enabled me to have much greater freedom to actually plan and layout the book; to Peggy Winter, for compiling, editing, and proofreading the copy, particularly the indices — a tedious job, but a very necessary one; to the many new staff members, who, although puzzled by my general approach to the aesthetics of design and often astounded by my com- plete disregard for plans, chaotic babbling, and general procrastination, nevertheless, worked ceaselessly from crisis to crisis producing flawless assignments ; and finally to Bill Blewett, the Tartan ' s enthusiastic representative from the Taylor Publishing Co., for his many efforts in providing most compliant service and quick response to calls of distress. — Peter M.
