SN' YEARBOOK of SENIOR CLASSES of JANUARY and JUNE 1950 MABEL DEAN BACON VOCATIGNAL HIGH SCHOOL 127 East 22 Street New York IO, N. Y. MRS. MARY Q. CASSIDY, Principal .Bri Dear Graduates: ln the 1920's the college flapper had a brief moment of popularity. Now, in 1950, it is the high school teen-ager upon whom attention is focused. Never before have our young people been given so much genuine respect. Adults have made a serious effort to understand their point of view and to shape the better world that these young people are demanding. This brings a great responsibility to you who are now leaving high school. As gradu- ates you will be expected to work without discouragement to help build the kind of world you have talked about and which you long for. Your school has prepared you well for this. In your trade and academic training you have learned how to be self-supporting citizens, appreciative of the American code of living. Remember the ideals of your teen years and find some place in your com- munity where you can help turn them into realities. Today, your teachers and l congratulate you and wish you success in the years ahead. Sincerely, MARY Q. CASSIDY Principal -3266665011 ln appreciation of the splendid work of our teachers I we, the graduates of l95O, wish to dedicate this edition of the TORCH to all members of the faculty. We could hardly have learned the many fine skills of our trades, nor could we have had a thorough academic education, had it not been for these thoughtful people who chose teaching as their career. They shall stand out in our memories for many years to come, and it is our sincere wish that they will continue to serve our children iust as graciously as they have served us. .ihdorg 0 ur .Senior C aaa By MARIAN COGLIANO, June '50 Entering M.D.B. as a soph lin the main buildingl was something! You could hear the seniors yelling, You'll be sorry! You get on the elevator. Down, please. Sorry, you'll have to walk. What a school! Excuse me, could you tell me what time school ends? Sure, two o'clock. Three-forty-five is here and so are you. That's what you get when you're a sophomore! Before you know it your junior year has arrived, and this is what you hear: I have Cos. this term. I have Tex. What for? Who cares what the material is made of, as long as you can sew on it? Well, who cares about the name of the bone you're placing the pin curl on? Our senior year is here, the best year of high school: planning to take pictures, preparing for our senior show, making donations for the senior bazaar. lt really feels great to wear a blue smock. Then before graduation everyone is planning for the prom. Pink gowns, blue ones, strapless-everyone tries for something different. When the day finally arrives everyone is so excited, and before you can count to ten it is a week before graduation. One by one each student receives a diploma and sets out to try her luck at her trade, and to meet what life has in store for her. Good luck to all! During that year the Annex to us was iust the friendly place in which we spent our first high school days so happily. We gave little thought to those who spent many years there before us, but it is interesting to learn that the Annex was originally the Hebrew Technical School for Girls, established in l904. At that time, the city did not provide vocational high schools, so many of these schools were started by philanthropic people. In about 1932, when there was no longer any need for these private vocational schools, this school was sold to the Board of Education and became our Annex. The six story building now has seven academic classes and fourteen shop classes. On the sixth floor are the infirmary and medical rooms and on the fifth floor, the cafeteria. What memories of good things to eat come back to us! The fourth floor, or rather the gymnasium, brings fond recollections of the dances and tournaments. The library is on the main floor and what a charming place it is! As for the auditorium- need I say more about it than that we come back 'to it for our graduation exercises? Graduation brings us back to the present which in turn reminds us of the future-when we will undoubtedly think many times of our first year at Mabel Dean Bacon Annex. 8 S 2 F r I I . 1 mwl. X f' ' All mf .. -' AM WU- ,M ,-M. . . ggv-F.,-'..ae'f 'u' , jlze .fgccwlemic elaarfmenf Although as a trade school we specialize in vocational training, the academic subiects have done much to make our graduates well-informed citizens and well-rounded personalities. The academic department has developed gradually. ln 1922, two hours of academic subiects were programmed for each girl in addition to her five hours of trade training daily. ln 1938, when Mrs. Cassidy became principal, the Dalton plan was dropped and Regents examinations introduced. Like other New York City vocational high schools, we now have a course of study that includes four years of English, three years of Social Studies and Health Education. ln History, we learn to understand the present in terms of the past. ln English, literature and good usage in speech and writing are stressed. We have remedial reading classes for those who need special help and honors classes for an enriched program. The present heads of the academic department are Miss Mary M. Bradley and Mrs. Ruth G. Minsky. At graduation, several awards are made to girls for distinguished academic work. The Carolyn H. Stern medal is given for the greatest progress in English, and the English Department medal is presented for the highest English average. The Social Studies cer- tificate is given tothe girl who has the highest average in Social Studies, while the Ameri- can History medal is given for the highest average in this subiect alone. The P.S.A.L. contributes a certificate through the Health Education department. There are also awards for character, athletic achievement, and good sportsmanship. We are as proud of our academic department as we are of the trade departments and grateful for the enrichment it has offered us! IO , A.. -frmyj M .Wai ,z ' 'iw- ms,ahb B'Wr5. Our school, developed by Miss Grace Dodge and Mrs. Mary Schenck Woolman, was the first of its kind. Its earliest curriculum offered training in hand sewing, designing, lampshade making, millinery, and sample garments. In 1902, the Manhattan Trade School was founded as a private institution. ln 1910, this became part of the city Board of Education. The girls were tried out for a month, under factory conditions. lf successful, they were given further training and placed. Diplomas were not awarded until after three months satisfactory work in industry. When our school became part of the New York City Board of Education, the head of the Boston Trade School for Girls, Miss Florence Marshall, was its 'first principal. ln 1919 our present building was opened, known as Manhattan Trade School for Girls. Training in other trades and academic subiects was soon introduced. Credit for our school's position in the field of vocational education belongs :o Miss Dodge, Mrs. Woolman, Miss Marshall, Miss Violet Coen, who was for a time head of the trade department, to Miss Beatrice Ohayon, our present First Assistant in Needle Trades, and to Mrs. Mary Q. Cassidy, who has been our principal since 1938. From 1937 to 1948 our school was known as the Manhattan High School of Women's Garment Trades, and in January 1949 we received our present name in honor of Mrs. Rogers H. Bacon, an active worker in the field of education and welfare. At present, the Needle Trades department has twenty-seven teachers, and offers courses here and at our annex in custom dressmaking, ready to wear, special machine operating, trade millinery, novelty and artificial flower making. 12 1 R 2 Q 2 3 pon-Q 33 , 1 'if iw X X 1 .27 K ' xfffk 4 rg E. , julia 'M film 59 ' M ,O . It is a three year course, starting in third term. First of all a girl has to get the necessary tools and get accustomed to our school. ln third term you are taught the fundamentals of the trade such as manicures, shampoos, and scalp treatments. ln fourth and fifth terms you review the previous term's work with, of course, additional training. If in your previous terms your work has been exceptionally good, in sixth term you are sent down to the school beauty shop. ln seventh term all girls are expert workers and are assigned customers in the school shop. While in the shop the girl attains the assurance needed to work on customers in her chosen profes- sion and becomes familiar with the routine of a shop in the business world. Every girl gets the opportunity of being manager and clerk. Since they must know the science of the trade, they are taught cosmetology. In eighth term the girls take courses in hair dyeing and tinting. They also attend the beauty culture convention which is held semi-annually. One hundred per cent of our girls taking the state board examination for their licenses have successfully passed. The placement office has placed a number of the girls in some of the best salons in the city, and many of the girls become teachers in their turn. CAFETERIA TRAINING Mabel Dean Bacon Vocational High School gives girls experience for the future. One of the most practical courses is cafeteria training which gives students practice in the preparation, cooking and serving of meals and enables girls to continue their studies as dietitians in college. Cafeteria training begins in the students' cafeteria where all the girls of the school have lunch. There the girls learn the fundamentals. They do not actually cook, but they prepare the recipes. These are in family size for six servings. For larger quantities they learn to multiply the recipes. After this training comes the advanced course in the first floor Tea Room where the girls do the actual cooking and managing of the entire kitchen. They learn to run a kitchen as in the finer New York restaurants. The Tea Room is open to the public and caters to at least a hundred people daily. This gives experience in serving at the counter. Some of the girls are placed in the best restaurants in New York as salad makers, pastry bakers, cooks, and other kitchen workers. Some girls work in hospital tray rooms in responsible positions. Still others marry soon after school. Their husbands are sure of excellent meals because of this fine training. Girls that have taken this course have never regretted their choice. They have found it valuable training and a practical vocational COUl'Se. I4 1 'gm . V. ,g k-fl' 2 ' Y ,J f .glw I . K . The related subiects department is one ot the departments that take care of these needs which include textiles, biology, cosme- tology, mathematics, typing and art. They aim at understanding the trade and the world. A girl whose trade is dressmaking gains through the study of textiles and art. The textiles class offers information on yarn manufacture, structure of materials, different types of cloth, the purpose of each, and the use and nature of fabrics. The art department helps the girls with designs and flat pattern and draping, blending colors and fabrics, and developing a sense of beauty. The beauty culture girls gain from Cosmetology in which they learn about bone struc- ture, faces, skin, finger nails, and other parts of the body. They learn the principles of massage, make-up, and other aspects of their trade. ln art, they create hair styles, learn the rules of color and design in make-up, and develop other skills to help them when they graduate. Subiects which teach material valuable in business are typing, mathematics, and business practice which give the fundamentals of good commercial management. The science classes are important not only for their trade information but for their information about foods, health and other things in daily life. They make us both better technicians and better citizens. lb 6 ' A ff . L .:1 ,'i4a,zf , , A w ' ' Fr - ml f , I I 2 U h 4, S 5, . .N U. N..t -. We thank you so much. Thanks for the memories, The times that we played ball, The way we used to fall, The way we used to linger in the locker and the halls, We thank you so much. Thanks to Mrs. .lacob's class, The times we had to run, And brother, that's no pun. The homework and the questioning Would always leave us wondering. We thank you so much. Thanks for the memories, The days in the good old gym, To keep our figures trim, Instead we'd come out worn and ragged Looking even more haggard. We thank you so much. Thanks to our parents, Who gave us every dollar, To help us become scholars But then we used to holler, Mal iust another dollar. We thank you so much. Thanks for the memories, The days that were so bright, The times we used to fight, For things we thought were right. We thank you so much. Thanks forthe memories, We'll have of one another, We know we'll miss each other, And some day when we're mothers, We'Il come back to see each other, We thank you so much. By JOANNE MCKENNA, June '50 The term is overg The marks are in, And now boredom Starts to set in. The teachers are busy From morn till night And if we don't keep quiet We're not thought very bright. Listen girls, l've learned my trade And l'Il never forget it, and it's not my fault if yo I blew a whistle, can't you hear? From this question, we run in fear. Listen girls, and you shall hear Of a teacher whom I know you all fear. She teaches Math and Business Training, l do not think she needs further explaining. Now in great haste to her we go She punishes Iateness, don't you know? Cautious and quiet, without making a sound, The head ofthe Beauty Culture department enter Here's a History teacher who rarely gives a test But she still knows the girls whose work is best.
