And return as victor then, To receive the winneris pay. You know I would like to have lived In a palace built of stoneg To have had a lot of slaves To attend a golden throne. I think I would like to have drunk, From the vintner's bottle too, And to have the fester come To refresh me when I'm blue. lfancy l'd like to have roamed ln a sailor's life so gay, With the ships and mighty guns And have fought the roughest fray. But these are the dreams of the age, And the world I have is realg For the things that take our time Are exacting: yet I feel, That if I could give to each act, In the daily work that's mine, Cf the thought that makes it great, And the care that makes it fine, The youth in the years that will come, In my fancy, now I see, Will be yearning for the things Through which life is blessing me. -RICHARD L. W ' 'H 37 to 6. The game was much more evenly matched than the score indicates. Throughout the first half the Hornets played a fine game on both offense and ll defense. This is shown by the Hornets holding Catawba to two touchdowns li in the first half. ln the last half many substitutions were made by the Hornets in order to get an idea as to the playing ability of the squad. li . . . lt Before the strong offense of Richmond University, the Hornets met cle- til feat, Z7 to O. Greater experience with a line running attack gave the Rich- ii V moncl team its margin of victory. The tackling of Parker, a first-year man for 1 K. U 1 . . . y, li Lynchburg, was outstanding in this game. ei all' ll Using an entirely new system of play the Hornets won a decisive victory over Bridgewater College, 49 to 7. This game was featuredby a fine aerial attack by Young and Thomas, and the broken-field running of Haggard. At the start of the second half the Hornets opened up a passing and running attack that could not be matched by the Bridgewater team. The Hornets made a total of I9 first downs to 6 for Bridgewater. After leading, 6 to 0, at the end of the first half, the Hornets were de- feated by Randolph-Macon College, I2 to 6. Following a fumble by a Ran- dolph-Macon back, which was recovered by BN. Wykle, the Hornets made their only touchdown. The Jackets tied the score in the third quarter by a strong aerial attack and in the fourth quarter made another touchdown after an eighty-yard drive. Playing their first night game of the season, the Hornets were defeated by Roanoke College, 40 to l5. The Hornets were placed at a great disad- vantage because of the absence of Thomas, captain and star halfback. The lights also caused frequent fumbling on the part of the Hornets. A fumble by Roanoke behind their own goal line was recovered. by a Lynchburg player lg and resulted in the Hornets' first touchdown. The Hornets started the second half with renewed spirit, but began to weaken toward the latter part of the game. The work of Haggard was well noted in this game. Hampden-Sidney defeated the Hornets, 33 to 0, in Death Valley. The defense and offense of the Hornets failed to work properly in the first half and resulted in several touchdowns for Hampden-Sidney. ln the second half the Lynchburg team presented an entirely different offense and defense. Although the Hornets failed to score, they penetrated close to the enemy goal line a num- ber of times. After holding a I4 to 9 lead at half time, the Hornets lost a close game to Atlantic University, 22 to I4. Haggard and Blankinship looked the best for the Hornets, both making nice gains through the line and around end. The passing attack-of the Guilford team spelled defeat for the Hornets, 39 to 0. During the second half the Hornet offense functioned more smoothly, but lacked the final punch in putting the ball over the goal line. The offense of the two Lynchburg tackles was well noted in this game. L1101 e H NM 'os 'Tt'ffTf ,gf ff: e -fifth-W V , , --5 . The Hornet forwards showed up exceptionally well in this game, handling the ball with great accuracy. The Hornets lost their first game of the season to a non-conference foe, Lenoir Rhyne, Z7 to 25. i After playing a number of games on their own floor the Hornets invaded foreign territory to be defeated in three out of four games. Being defeated by V. M. I., University of Virginia, and Randolph Macon. Victory being registered over Roanoke College, 35 to 32. Once more on their home floor the Hornets met defeat at the hands of V. P. I., a member of the big four, 39 to 21. A i On another four day trip the Hornets were defeated by Lenoir Rhyme, Appa- lachian S. T.. C., Milligan College, and Emory and Henry. Lynchburg suffered its worst defeat of the season at the hands of Hampden- Sidney, 60 to 28. After Randolph-Macon had tied with William and Mary for first place in the Virginia Conference the Hornets defeated them Z9 to 25. The meet was fea- tured by the work of Blankinship and Blackwell in the dashes, Blackwell and Ballou in the hurdles, and Thomas and Barbour in the field events. The Hornets decisively defeated the Bridgewater team by the score of 96 to 29. This was the largest num-ber of points scored by the Hornets in any one meet during the entire season. Again the Hornets were far ahead in annex- ing first places, taking a total of eleven before the meet had ended. The Emory and Henry team was the next to fall before the cinderpath artists of Lynchburg College. The final score was 85 to 4l. Greatest interest ofthe day was shown in the IOO- and 220-yard dashes between Blankinship of the Hornets and Littlejohn of Emory and Henry. These two provided the greatest race by running shoulder to shoulder in l00 and 220 almost to I1221 i 1 l l l w 1 the finish line with Blankinship finally taking both first places. Captain Thomas also proved to be another individual who showed up well in this meet. Thomas took first place in both the javelin and pole vault and also added a few more points throughout the meet. The Hornets brought their 1930 track season to a close by defeating Hampden-Sidney for the second time this season, having defeated them the first of the season in a triangular meet with Richmond. Most of the first places Were Won by the Hornet track men and the final score was 85 to 41. The team journeyed to Richmond to participate in the state track meet which was held on May I6 and l7.
