We came, we saw, we conquered, we stepped onto the last step. There it was. Wilbur H. Lynch High stood proudly against the blue, late summer sky. A few stragglers still were trudging up the hill to complete the first real assembly of the Class of 1959. lt was a sunny September 5, 1956. Excited, but trying-to-be-sophisticated voices buzzed. We were a part of it now. We sat in the playpen in assembly and were ieered. For class elections we used real voting machines . . . Gene Agresta, our first president, Dave Richardson, vice- president, Jean Wharton, Johnny Kot, our secretary and treasurer. The maiorettes looked so nice marching down onto the gym floor in their white uniforms. We defeated Gloversville 13-7 in "our school's" first football game. We became Stu- dent Councilors. We held Hi-Y induction. Our first Student Mixer was "Silhouettes." We remember the "December Dream" Christmas formal. Coming back for the new year 1957, we quaked facing the unfamiliar midyears. We learned that we must know more than "Et tu Brute!" Winter passed quickly as sororities and fraternities were in full swing and we wore out our mailboxes look- ing for the fateful bids. Initiation came. We couldn't curl our hair! We duckwalked till we ached. Class artists entered the Mohawk Mills Art Competition. Leaving Napoleon, we bussed to the city for a firsthand look at the old and new world of the United Nations and the Cloisters. We met the new Jayvee cheerleaders: Pat, Pat, Jackie, Betty, Diane, Gloria, Dianne, Mary Beth-then there was Saturday morning history review. Battle of Hastings 1215? . . . three hours for one exam? Our sophomore year was finished. We kept our heads high as we climbed those stairs September 4, 1957. We were back as iuniors now. Our Jack Gomulka scored the season's first touchdown. October 7 headlines read "Schools Closed Due to Asian Flu Epidemic-two weeks and yet some of us still had the bug. Football victory over Philip Schuyler by one point . . . gigantic report cards, some in technicolor. We elected Frank Guarino as our iunior president, Gene Agresta, vice-president, and Jeanne and Johnny same as last year.. Some made the Observer column . . . On December 12, we didn't wear our gloves because we had our long-awaited class rings. A night to remember was "Emerald Eve" Christmas night. Our basketball team . . . 12 wins and five losses . . . V-I-C-T-O-R-Y. We noticed how the collegiate look affected our boys crewnecks, buckles. A sack is for potatoes, girls. The Friday night of midyears we went wild when we defeated Mont Pleasant 57-51 on their own court. Last day of January we stampeded Nott Terrace 87-57 . . . February 17, four feet of snow . . . school closed for 2 weeks . . . worst storm since 1914. Easter vacation was shortened and our orchids got wet. We were proud of the iunior edition of "The Item." Six of us were tapped for National Honor Society membership. And then on the big night we had both the garlands and stars for our prom "Bella Notte" . . . the flower laden gondola . . . red checkered cloths on tables with those candles in wine bottles which many of us have as remembrance. Betty Kryzanowski, a beautiful Venetian queen . . . Jean Wharton with a cane. It was our night. The final banquets-and here we are as Seniors. I6 u li. I My N 3 A S Q fi FOOTBALL woN - 1 LOST - 4 For the '58-'59 season the Hilltoppers had a new coach and one new assistant coach. Both brought new training methods to halt the Hilltoppers' losing streak. Mr. Cionek returned to help Mr. Long with the line-men. Mr. Plumb handled the backfield men, and Mr. Ruback had charge of the Junior Varsity. Under Mr. Long's new system, the aims were to build an enthusiastic interest in the game, teach the fundamentals, especially to the younger boys, and to instill football discipline in the team. The obiect of this season was to get a good foundation for the following seasons. Next year Mr. Long will have an all-veteran team returning, ready to face Linton and Mont Pleasant who will be added to the schedule. Although the record is not so good this year, the wins had to be sacrificed in order to gain tactical experience. f if ...A 52504: in i.f3f.f . s , is " f qw 2 , , - ,E . j, ' " Q 'ia b : . .. .. qbb. . Captain Dave Santos with 335 points and iunior Don Safran with 283 points supplied a large part of the year's total. A.H.S. scored 105 markers in a single encounter. lt was this team whose only league losses were an overtime verdict in the Albany "dungeon," a one point loss to Linton, and two late season losses to Mt. Pleasant when key men were hampered by iniuries. Amsterdam High also handed Class A champion Linton its only setback, an 85-43 shellacking on our own court. Besides captain Santos, next year's Varsity will also be without defensive ace Ed Tyndall, sure-shooting Johnny Kuk, lanky Bob Cantine, scrappy Dave Richardson, and the old reliables Gene Agresta and Ray Hitchcock. :U A.H.S. The Man . ss c,cccc,,, TOM LA CONTE SALVATORE ANDOLINA Senior Play reading committee SYNOPSIS The play takes place in the living room of Grandpa Vanderhof, a quiet man who has evaded the income tax bureau for 24 years. This is clearly a house whose occu- pants are individualists, everyone does what he enioys-no questions asked. Alice Sycamore, a pretty secretary for Kirby Company, falls in love with the boss's son, Tony Kirby. Trouble starts to brew when Alice invites the Kirby family to a dinner party. Arriving a day early, the Kirby's are mildly shocked at the unusual display of pet snakes, ballet, printing, and playwriting of the eccentric Sycamore family. Grandpa does his best to make the company feel welcome but the evening ends in failure. The fiasco is complete when the police raid the house and send the guests and occupants to iail for manufacturing fireworks without a permit. The next day Alice plans to leave for a vacation in the Adirondacks. She is finally persuaded by Tony to stay and marry him. The play ends on a happy note as Tony explains his "mistake" CHe had brought his parents a day ahead so they could purposefully see a family who loved and understood each otheri. l HONOR STUDENTS FIRST ROW: William Nelson, Edward Tyndall, Patricia Podolec, Carol Slezak.
