Monahan, J. Fred Kerr, Superintendent President This yearbook, for the rest of your life, will be a reminder of your high school days. If you are like me, the disappointments and heanaches will lose their immediate sting, and the warmth ofthe good times will remain. When you look back, I hope none of you will regret that you didn't partake of high school to its fullest extent, for you only pass this way once. Therefore, while in high school, be a one-hundred percent high school student, lest you look back in vain on wh at might have been. William W. Monahan Superintendent Board ofTrustees . John F. Sallie Fultz Head WITH LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS Perhaps we, as a lot ofyearbooks do, could write a whole lot of bland, over-used trivia about how valuable and hardworking our school custodial and cafeteria staffs are, but we already know how much we need them, so why bother. Then we could ask around for their names to fill the empty space below their pictures. Well, that isn't needed, not in this school or this book, because they're more than just names. Our school staffs, including the teachers, are people - people with cares and feelings. They laugh and throw towels and get mad and occa- sionally tell a bad joke. They can smile through weeds and counsel us while giving change. Maybe it's easier to just say . . . THANKS',. Vikes Upset Fremont in 13-12 Tilt Lynbrook entered the 1970 season under a new divisional set up which sep- arated the old S.C.V.A.L. into two conferences. The Vikings wound up the league season with a l-3 won-lost record. The team's overall record was a disappointing 1-7-l. The highlight of the season came when Lynbrook notched it's first varsity victory over Fremont in a close 13-12 tilt. There was evidence of great team efforts in the 20-20 Homecoming tie with Buchser as well as the season ending 21-19 loss to playoffbound Homestead. Despite the poor won-lost record Coach Wagner felt the varsity had come a long way from the season opening defeat at the hands of Peterson. Consistent performances on offense were turned in by end Jay Miller fteam MVP and All-Leaguej, Rich Gilson fAll-Leaguej, and Matt Hurley fteam's Most In- spirationalj. Defensive stalwarts were All-Leaguers Ron Milazzo and George Sackinger. 36 Football 1 1- A . - , Vgl, Vg , . .111 fffjf, , M, ., ,:' . W - ..'- . 2 . Our season record was 17-7, the league record was 8-4 for the fourth place in the S.C.V.A.L. Other high-lights of the season were the Consolation title in the Awalt Christ- mas toumament, and probably the greatest win of my life, the 30-29 win against Fremont with a last minute shot by Tim Kenworthy. Fremont had a sin streak of 27 when they fell to our very disciplined Lynbrook team. It was just a super effort by a great team and a great, great win. The season was a success and I would hand it to Tim Kenworthy who was second leading scorer by two points and selected to the first team all-league. On the whole the year was a fantastic group effort and we couldn't have pulled it off without the entire team. Coach Dossa X sf .X f VA -s as,gL.p4 Gs .PV fb' '- :! '4 f Q-52 EC '-fin it ulifiif. A lot of tough breaks put a respectable place in the league out of reach. These were some bright spots in the year as the team had crushing wins over Buchser, Monta Vista and Wilcox. Rob Guthrie broke several team records and was selected second team all-league. The season was not indicitive of this hard working team. -Y V 4 b , 1 tl, , VK ,' ,f, , W 1 , i, A TQ W 'M 3 V,,. Highlights of the season were 68-45 and 48- 27 thrashings of Wilcox and Cupertino, and a 39-38 victory over a very strong Bucsher team. John Schmidt was the team's leading scorer, averaging over thirteen points per game. In addition, the team was led by the strong rebounding of Mark -Sole and John Bell, and the hustling of Gregg Rodak, Steve Coulter and Dave Reed. Many of the Frosh players can be counted on to make strong contributions to Viking basket- ball in the future. They have an unusual fresh- man-senior brothers combination in Jay and Bob Jacobson, who both play singles, and are expected to add spark to the team. This year's team is built around three returning lettermen, seven of last year's JV team and three novice racketeers. 64Tennis Top Row QL to RJ: R. Blanenship, M. Corliss, P. Winslow, M. Hazana, M. Freshman Princess, Barbara Nygardg Sophomore Princess, Laura Gagneg Junior Princess, Debbie Dunng and Senior Queen, Janet Sclar 124 Christmas Ball ' ii i i Silver Bells It was a hassle finding a date, buying a dress or rent- ing a tux, making reservations, buying the proper flowers, and borrowing dad's car, but the Christmas Ball proved to be an exciting and memorable exper- ience. Silver Bells served as the theme for this yearas ballglwhich was held in Lynbrook's cove. In the center of the floor was a flocked tree decorated with pastel bulbs, snow and boughs covered the window sills and the walls were decorated with silver bells and hanging ornaments. Highlighting the evening was the crowning of the Christmas Ball Queen, Janet Sclar and her class prin- cessesg Barbara Nygard, Laura Gagne and Debbie Dunn. Brian Peterson escorts queen Janet Sclar The Blue Barons Cat lefty provided entertainment for this year's Christmas Ball Fall A. S. B. Government Shawn Welch,A.S.B.President Cindy Guillot, Secretary and Kirk Rochester, Treasurer Executive Council 126 Fall Government I can only look on leaving the presidency with incredible relief. I alternately kick myself for making the mistake of getting elected and berate myself for not caring enough to resign. Other people have been involved with student govern- ment only to resign. . .and it makes no difference one way or the other since the lack of really CI mean reallyj concerned students do make Lyn- brook's government a very, very plastic one. Gen- erally speaking, the wrong people are in student government, they're out for prestige, activity points and a chance to get out of class. The right people are smart people who are, admit- tedly, cynical and see the student at Lynbrook High as he really is: not a hard-hat patriot or a heroin addict but someone who probably would respond to student government if it had a mean- ing for him. It's kind of a vicious circleg no one wants to become involved because they feel it's a joke, and it remains a joke until people who at least care a little about the students interests enter into it. I think more people are becoming more involved than they were. I can only hope that they don't become disenchanted with the plasticity too soon and give up. fsighlj Shawn Welch A.S.B. Lynbrook, led by Jim Meyer, Ernie Dossa, and Randy Bliss, started fast, tied KLIV at halftime, 54-54, then faded in the second half. KLIV's superior conditioning, coupled with some erratic officiating, proved to be the deciding factor as KLIV pulled it out, 106-99. Roll Call! Dan Russell, Spring A.S.B. President, noted that there is a great potential at Lynbrook. It is by far one of the best schools around and there are no real barriers to stu- dent government. Yet it is being killed by apathy and a strong underlying resistance to change in the studentsf' Despite the apathy of students, the Spring Government achieved many goals. For the first time a forum or panel discussion in- volving members of Lynbrook's administration, Dr. Monahan, and students was held. A constitutional revision enabling com- munication between class councils and the Legislative Council was made, a Student Bill of Rights was drawn up, T.V. time for A.S.B. alone was established, and a dinner to organize all six high schools in the district to work for the wants of the students was sponsored by Lynbrook officers. Its's our generation. We are very similar in the way we dress, and the way we feel about music, etc. There are some differences in our way of thinking, because of our different histories. Heidi compared the system of education in Germany with that in America. The Gymnasium is similar to our high school. A student planning to go on to a University enters the Gymnasium at the age of eleven and finishes in seven years. If a student doesn't plan to go to the University, then they go from elementary school into a trade school. Courses are more concentrated and students go to school six days out ofthe week. Besides California, Heidi has seen Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. She would like to see Michigan, the East Coast, and Canada also. Heidi loves horse-back riding and making friends. She enjoys American folk music and would like to learn to play the guitar. When Heidi returns to Germany she wants to study psychology but she also wants to return to the United States to attend college here for one year. Heidi added that she feels very accustomed to the American way of life. I don't feel homesick. You give me a very good time. I knowl want to go back to Germany becausel like my family but you have been great to me. 134 Foreign Exchange To Maria Polgar, our exchange student from Yugo- slavia, Lynbrook is a well-equipped and organized school. Compared to Yugoslavian schools, American schools are attended for a shorter period of time and subjects here are not studied as deeply. When Maria was asked to compare American teenagers to teenagers of her homeland, she said: They are very similar. Youth are the same regardless of the country from which they come. Maria loves to play the piano and enjoys swimming, water-skiing and reading books. She has enjoyed visiting San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel and several beaches during her visit and plans to visit many more scenic places. When asked to give her impressions and feelings about Lynbrook and its student body, Maria wrote the follow- ing poem. Maxia Polgar Ode Of Gratitude You, who received me so warmheartedly near the burning fireplace, You, who helped me to know your people and your land, You, who made me feel the Spring in Autumn and in Winter, With gratitude and lovel shake your hand.
