One is the Junior squad led by Nancy Coyne and the other squad is called the Senior squad with Carol Williams as head majorette. Both squads have twirled at the football games and basketball games, plus the Memorial Day parade. The girls have made their own new uniforms which lend in making the games exciting and colorful. Mr. Moss also directs a dance band which has per- formed at the Christmas Concert, at the Student Council Dance and has also appeared at the Youth Center. The members of both bands have worked hard to make the bands a success and we congratulate them on their splendid performances. They gave their first per- formance at the Christmas program and ap- peared again at the Spring Concert in May. Both of these performances were given under Lynbrook's Big Top. For the second consecutive year, under the direction of Mrs. Eva Wright, the orchestra has enlivened our assemblies and concerts. A main attraction in the success of the or- chestra is Mr. DeRubbo who has taught string fundamentals. Since the early '30's, students of L.H.S. have put their abilities and imaginations together to please the readers. During the past year the staff has turned out ten issues jammed full of news, sports, features, and fun. This entailed deciding what to put in the paper, who would do the writing, and who would foot the bills. Homeroom sales and advertisements helped to pay for it. The staff has loved its work and has put all its effort into the paper. They are indebted to the typing classes and Miss Chase, Miss Lampman, the advisor who helped meet impending dead-lines, and Mr. Johnson, the business manager who was always in there pitching. If the Lyn-News ever starts a Hall of Fame, Mr. Brennan and Mrs. Ackley will certainly deserve im- posing niches in it for transporting editor and the edition to and from the printers. Fnnlhall Winning only one game in six tries, a light but scrappy Lynbrook eleven suffered a 'froughn '51 season. One of the team's best games was with the Long Beach eleven and was featured by the out- standing eighty-six yard run by Alex Lazo. This helped the Owls to win the only game of the season, final result, Lynbrook 12, Long Beach 6. One of the toughest games of the season was the game with Garden City which the Owls lost 12-6, on the last play of the game. Although the Owls had an unfavorable sea- son, many fine plays were performed by the team. Outstanding players were Mike Soave, Bob Penta, Joe Notturno, and Freddie Mignogna. The coaching, however, cannot be forgotten. Coaches Covert, Sylvia, and Leyden did much for the iight and spirit of the team. However, it was a green team. Except for shooting Mike Soave, and ball handlers, Bob Penta and Fred Ferri, none of the players had Varsity experience before. As the Owls began the latter part of their season, they began to win some games. Bill Schreiner proved to be an outstanding set shot artist followed by big Charlie Ohman's rebound- ing. 4'Slippery Steve Rapaport and Dick Abrams also came through with some outstanding ball playing. Through the excellent and patient coaching of Wally Hawthorne, the Owls ended the sea- son by winning five games and losing twelve. As they would say in Brooklyn, wait until next year. Frnsh Take ESRI. llrnwn Lynbrook High's freshmen bas- ketball squad had an outstand- ing cage year, as they won the South Shore Athletic League Championship. Throughout a season of twenty games, they lost only one game to South Side. Outstanding players of the squad were Tom MacDonald, Howie Hines, and playmaker Mark Giragosian, also the tal- ented rebounding of Bob Sher- wood and Eddie Delattre. The ability of this team, plus the leadership of Coach Sid Covert, led them all the way to the S.S.A.L. crown. Front: Lecuit, Fetzer, Flynn, Watson I McKee. The Owls started the season off by winning four out of their first six league games. However they ended their season with a record of six wins and six losses. Most of the games were won by the out- standing pitching of Ed Zimmerli and Harry Carl. The hitting power was backed up by Chuck Dellaro and Freddie Mignogna. Behind the capable coaching of Mr. Sylvia our boys gave their best even though they didn't finish in first place. For a team with only three seniors, it did remarkably well. The star of the team was Clinton Beaven, who won many of the two' and-a-half mile jaunts in near record time. He was closely followed by Jack Schreiner, john Lecuit, George Nagel, and Richard Abrams. Lynbrook closely fought many larger schools and managed to take quite a few seconds in the meets. Credit should be given to Mr. Mar- quardt, who worked every day with the boys and was justly rewarded for his efforts. Track Although losing all their meets the young Lyn-P brook track team showed definite signs in '51 of having the ability of becoming a fine team in the coming years. The team was comprised mainly of freshmen and sophomores all of whom showed a great deal of promise. There were a few who starred in their individual events. First of all, there was Clinton Beaven, a Soph- omore who crossed the finish line first in the mile in most of the meets and also placed second in the league sectionals. Then there was Peter Byrnes and Jack Schreiner who did exceptionally well in the hurdles. Placing in many 100 and 220 yard dashes was Alan Adamsong and collecting many points for the team in the half mile were George Nagel and jim Camardella. Lynbrook's best field contender was Bob Condon, who did well in the high jump. Mr. Carr's coaching cannot be forgotten. He worked every day with the team and should be well rewarded in the coming years. Beaven, Schreiner, Condon, Lecuit, Nagel, Fraser, Watson, Goble, Abrams. THE VARSITY IILUB In 1944, a group of fathers interested in high school sports met with the fp football coach for the purpose of promoting a dinner for those boys who had won their Varsity letter in football. It was later decided to include all sports. This group of men became known as the Dad's Committee. It was only natural with the formation of the Dad's Committee that the boys should band together as a group-hence they were organized in 1944 as the Lynbrook High School Varsity Club. The boys of Lynbrook are fortunate to have an interested group of men lending their interest and support to the Varsity Club. At the dinner, pre- sentations of awards are made for the most improved athlete and the most outstanding athlete of the year. At graduation time, some fortunate senior is honored by having his name inscribed on the Memorial Bowl, and he is presented with S 100 to assist him in his future education. These girls are responsible for check- ing locker room, taking attend- ance, and making themselves generally useful. This year the girls sold pro- grams at the football games to make money, and for fun, held Dads' Night and Moms' Night. Right this way folks to get your grandstand seats for the Greatest Show on Earth! September 1948-we entered high school. The excitement of high school soon died off and we settled down to work. Along came the Freshmen Tests and everyone spent the afternoon punching holes. March 1949 came and with it our first Classnite! With our theme of California we sped along into third place. September 1949 came and we entered school as Sophomores. Now we could tease the Fresh- men! Our subjects got tougher this year but everyone seemed to weather the storm. Then came Classnite and everyone went rushing around again. We had the theme of Cinderella that year. We came in first in skits but we didn't quite make the grade that night-we came in last. Intermission's over folks-please return to your seats. September 1950 and we were Juniors. Along in January our class held its prom with the theme of South Pacific. Low lights, sway- ing palms, and soft music made the gym look like a South Sea Island. Then came Classnite and we were Annie Get Your Gun. Again we came in first in skits and for the first time in the history of Classnite the winning skit was put on in the gym that night. We tried very hard to win Classnite and came close to our goal, too- we lost by just nineteen points. Close behind Classnite followed our play, Off a Pewter Plat- ter, a hysterical comedy about a zany family. September 1951 and the peak of high school was reached. We were Seniors!!! In November our class put on the play, Cheaper by the Dozen, which was a huge success. Following on its heels came Classnite, conducted in December of this year. We had the theme of Marionettes, and in our greasepaint and strings, we came in first again in skits which we presented in the gym that night. As for Classnite itself - we romped into first place by sixty-five points! Then everyone realized that midterms were coming, along with Senior averages. Everyone waited with a hushed silence until he received his card. Senior themes came and went and we were ready for Senior Assembly. What a hilarious event! Then to the opposite extreme, everyone went in formals and tux to the Big Event- the Senior Prom. With all our deadlines met by last minute rushes, our yearbook came out and what a yearbook-eight pages in color!
