That year, with comic strip characters as the general theme and Lil' Abner as the standard for the Frosh, we entered into our first Class Nite competition. Next fall we came back after a busy summer prospecting gold in them thar hills, but now we were Sophomores. How proud we were to say that there were four members of our class on Varsity football and that there was an all-Soph j.V. basketball squad. Also we came into the lime light with our outstanding decora- tions representing The Rickety Rickshaw theme in Class Nite. After a long vacation we eagerly gathered up our picks and shovels and got back to the grind. Keeping a weather eye to the sea we put on quite a nautical prom. Class Nite with the Gay Nineties setting was an intense struggle among all classes particularly between the Juniors and Seniors. When the assayer re- ported that our diggings were only second quality, we were indeed heartbroken. That year we put on a sprightly teen-age comedy The Divine Flora which showed that our class had a sizeable group of Thespians. And then we were Seniors with our ultimate goal in sight! We hitched up our pack horses and headed for our last gold seeking adventure. The '49er troupe chose for its final performance in the old opera house that slam-bang hit Life With Father. We staked out a claim for Class Nite and put on a momentous prom. Finally we crossed the last ridge of mountainsg and as our cry of Graduation or Bust faded into an echo we bade good-bye to ou and greeted the future with the never-to-be-forgotte r fellow '49ers n golden memories of L. Chorus As the wagon train plods along through prairie lands in this year of '49 the voices of the chorus of Lynbrook High School are heard along the trail. Although Mrs. Wright only joined up with this hyar wagon train in September, she shore has done a mighty fine job with it. The chorus has favored us at many of our meetins' which take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On special occasions such as Christmas and St. Patrick's Day they gave an extry special performance. Like any other up and comin' organization the chorus has elected officers, who have shore been a help to Mrs. Wright. Dan'l Woodard is president, Lois Murray is vice-president, Virginia Dolan is secretary, and Charlie Schmidt completes the quartet as treasurer. A group from the chorus sang at the bank for their Christmas program. I must say we made a mighty fine showin'. Us forty-niners are pretty durn proud of this hyar chorus of ours. Busier than the old bewhiskered prospector were the members of the Lynbrook Boys' Hi-Y. Carrying out their object of being a service club, the boys did a striking job of running the Youth Centre, with the co- operation of their partners, the Girls' Hi-Y. They also peddled candy and soda at the football games. The Hi-Y-ers filled their sacks with enough gold to sponser two full length movies for assembly programs, and buses to take fellow golddiggers to distant games. Besides that they dug even deeper and came up with a S50 booster for the Owl plus a S50 scholar- ship to the outstanding '49-ers. So 1et's wish the boys in the blue jackets, as successful a strike as the '49-ers enjoyed. Front: Roth, R. Friedman, Stoeckler, Connors, Crossman, Salzman, Terry, Disch, Noll. Second: Alger, S. Beside rounding out one of the most successful seasons in 15 years, the Owls compiled a terrific record of 4 wins, 2 ties, and one loss, and in addition were co-champions of the S. S. A. L. Section B title along with South Side. One of the best defensive and offensive lines in the country was made up of rough and tumble sourdoughs like Tim Harvey, jack Brennan, George Lazo, joe Weisgerber, Bill Daniels, Claude Seitz and Dick Babcock. The gold dust backfield, which played like a big league out- fit, particularly on laterals, was made up of Bob Bossung, Bill Ganser, Jack Drahos CAll-Scholasticb, Dan Woodard, and Dom Lucarelli. Probably one of the most controversial topics of the whole cam- paign was that 7-7 tie with South Side. Most fans will remember that the score was tied going into the last minute of play. A sur- prise formation featured jack Drahos booting a 25 yard field-goal which was good except for the fact that an illegal man in the back- 'J.1'ff 7 - 2 'c .. 7 -t ' A fb S-. if 2 'mics ft L ' ZW' ' . v.fJ:fae 'X Wfwrff, .' fx.:.fs.f , if VARSITY-Front: Harvey, Babcock, Daniels, Lucarelli, Welsgerber, Ganser V, Bossung, Woodard, Lazo, Drahos, Seitz, Brennan. Baseball The '48 baseball team really struck gold last spring, when they swung through a highly successful season under the able direction of Coach Ed Silvia. While clinching their claim on the coveted South Shore Section Two title, the team compiled a great record of 13 wins and only 4 losses which will long be remembered. Porky Hoffman, who pitched a no-hitter at Woodmereg Hank Bockrath, Tom McWatters, and Bill Heaney shared the mound duties while Dan Woodard received behind the plate. Capt. George Paff, Bill Ganser, Art Villani and Jerry Seely made up an exceptionally well-balanced infield while the potential Babe Ruths in the outfield were Claude Seitz, Jack Drahos, and Dick Virture. Malverne, Long Beach, Freeport, and Sewanhaka handed the Owls their only lossesg the latter of which was the worst defeat. And there the final strike for '48 baseball was found.
