The Closs of 1948 presenfs THE oWL Lynbrook High School Lynbrook, New York Dedication The Class of 1948 has asked me to announce their selection of Stuart l.. DeGelleke as the teacher of the year. Many students have learned not only the mysteries of mechanical drawing, general shop, and metal work through his capable instruc- tion, but many more have learned about bowling techniques in numerous after school sessions at the Lynbrook alleys. He can be seen at all of the major sports events, cheering on our team. In addition to the high school students who have profited by his ability as a teacher, many of our parents, several teachers, and members of the school board have been studying woodworking under his competent supervision two evenings a week as part of the Adult Education Program. All recognize him as an understanding, friendly, and industrious worker. Ask any L. H. S. student and he will invariably reply, Mr. DeGelleke? Oh, he's a swell guy! This in any language is a great compliment to one deserving nothing but our sincerest thanks. 4 Stuart L. DeGeIIeke 5 Mr. Owl: Hold on there, fellow. Why so pensive? Bobby: Oh, I'm iust standing here, wondering what high school is like. I've just graduated from the grades, you see, and to be truthful, l'm a little worried. Mr. Owl: But I assure you, boy, there's nothing to worry about if you iust continue doing as you are told. I think you're concerned merely because you don't know what to expect. Bobby: Mmm, I suppose that's it. By the way, who are you? Mr. Owl: Some folks know me as the Class of '48: others as Good Sportsmanship, the two have always gone hand in hand. You'll soon learn, boy, that Good Sportsmanship is a steadfast tradition in L. H. S. Bobby: That's good to hear .... Say, what's that under your arm? Mr. Owl: This is a prized possession-a scrapbook of my wonderful days in high school. Bobby: May I see it? Mr. Owl: Certainly you may. And that gives me an idea. I'll explain each page as we go along: and in that way, you can find out about the school, activities and your future upper classmen. Bobby: That will be terrific! r HARRY M. Owl: These energetic Seniors have made possible the publication of this book. The Staff, elected at the end of their Junior year, was organized early in the fall term, Senior year. Planning began immediately. Each editor had several helpers. Miss White, literary advisor, continually asked for copy to be approved while Mr. Johnson kept the business staff on the job. Although the task was a complicated one, all obstacles were finally overcome through perserverance and hard work. v - 2:7 ij': K ig ' 'Nw is 4 Seated-Goll, Riemensclmeidor, Donald. Bobby: Sure thing, Mr. Owl. Go right ahead-l'm a'listenin'! Owl: Well, the class of '48 has a right to be proud of itself. As Freshmen, we remained near the top all year in the sale of bonds and stamps. In 1945, as well-adiusted Sophs, with the help of Mrs. Kinne, we adopted a war orphan in an attempt to do our bit for Europe's youth. In our Junior year, through class unity, we were victorious in an exciting Class THERESA DeLUCA Secretary Nite. We began to realize the talent we had in our class when our Junior play, A Date With Judy was a great success. The theme of our first prom was Chinatown, The first semester of our Senior year was hectic, crammed to the brim with activities. After the Green and Gold parties campaigned, class officers were chosen on official voting machines. Our Senior play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay was made a hit by the class Thespians. Morgan again proudly re- ceived the victor's cup at Class Nite. In February, averages were figured and we learned that our class possessed that rarity in L. H. S.-a male valedictorian! Was it good? Mr. Owl: Of course it was good. Everyone had a good time, and the class cleared a very tidy sum. The play was Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. lt was about two American girls who went off to Europe by themselves, and all the crazy things they did. The girls were Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough. They met two young medical students on the ship, who took care of things when Emily thought she killed a man by throwing a deck chair overboard and acci- dentally hitting him on the head. Just before the ship docked Cornelia got the measles and had to be smuggled off, right under the health inspector's nose. The third act was set in a French boarding house with several hilarious experiences involving French bathtubs, telephones, and Bastille Day. Soon the girls began taking lessons from Monsieur de la Croix, who they later found out only used them as an ap- proach to Cornelia's actor father, Otis Skinner. Helen Ahola and Barbara Kern, as the leading ladies, gave convincing performances. They were supported by Tom Garrity and Jimmy Morgan, who provided the romantic interest, and the remainder of a fine castl Springer Boquist Kean levy Goll Nichols Perrotta Reilly, Garrity, Ahola, Kern, Morgan, Salmon, Garth, Waldman McKenna Newton F Fischer Donahue McNeill. 1-. , 2 l Will,5.E-. , rx, 1 g sl 543, I ---M X Q-.......mh...,.,., ,,k ir' A- .K 1 x .rv cu- t Front-Colonna, Palmer, Henning, Hunt, Georgins, Diamond stone, Stollwerk, Blaney.
